I love it with black bean sauce. Good with both pork and tofu skin.

I like it. My family all hate it. Guess that's what they get for raising a white kid in, as >>6616114 would say, a ching chong durka durka garbage country.

I like it stew-fried (like... half stir-fry, half stew; dunno a better word for it) with tomatoes, pork mince and beaten eggs as well as in curry. I don't like it as a salad, though.

They're disgusting. I tried the Chinese and the Indian varieties and they're both horrible.

>> No.6616881

Bitterness is really up there as far as having a mature palate goes, so few people here will like it.

I like to fry in sesame oil it and have it over rice with a bit of rice wine vinegar and soy sauce. An easy and flavoursome snack.

pretty great, I prefer the spiny variety as a dry fry with mustard oil, birds eye pepper, and turmeric. the smooth variety is better sauteed. both varieties can take a lot of salt.

It really depends on the dish and how it's used to enhance the flavor, but on its own it's so acrid it tastes like fucking soap.

Makes a great addition to beer, though.

Bitterness is a flavor related to poisonous/harmful compounds.

Cucumbers used to be pretty bitter before european farmers figured out that they could breed them to taste good. If you go to an asian grocery store you can find bitter cucumbers if you want to punish your taste buds

>> No.6620923

>>6620237
I heard you were supposed to peel cucumbers towards the stem or otherwise you'd stroke all the bittern over the entire cucumber. Most of the bitterness was at the stem.

It took me a while to get used to them. I remember as a kid my mom would be in the kitchen peeling them and trying to get me to try them. A lot Filipinos would use it in their dishes.

I've only had it once at a Chinese restaurant as a Pork and Bitter Melon soup, and I really liked it/found nothing amiss with it. Would eat again.

>> No.6621025

>>6616104
Never enjoyed it.

Even as an Chinese who's stayed his whole life in an Asian country, bitter melon is one of the worst things I've ever had. The one time this vegetable has been tolerable was in a mean stew/soup my grandmother made with lots of minced pork and white pepper, otherwise I try as best as I can to politely decline eating it.

You scrubs, bitter melon is dirt cheap, delicious and extremely good for you. If your baby palate can't take the bitterness then you can do things like salt the bitter melon and let it sit for 30 minutes. This leeches out a fair amount of water and along with it a lot of the bitterness. Be sure to remove the pith/seeds on the inside as well, the cleaner you do this the less bitter it will be. Blanching also removes bitterness. Slice and saute with garlic and a bit of sugar and you have a base with which you can do anything. I cook it in an egg pancake (pic related).

>>6620200
Well, that would be why you have to learn to appreciate it, instead of immediately enjoying it like you did with sugar when you were a child.

what a dumbfuck.
look apperantly you are too dumb and childish to understand what he said but when you are a kid, overeating vegetables can kill you. they tend to have a lot of minerals your underdeveloped body has a hard time processing, like iron. so when you grow up you lose the sense of bitterness (unless you never ate them and are basically unable to eat vegetables) for these kinds of foods, thus associating a lack of appreciation for bitter foods with fucking man children and 9 year olds.

i cant say it surprises me how many of you fags cant handle the cold hard truth. I wonder what the numbers of a mandatory poll on this board would say on which vegetables no one will put up with. I bet 70% of them.
