Why do people order salads at restaurants? Shouldn't you save money for something that actually takes time and/or skill to prepare?

if your only form of social contact at restaurants is a waitress you have failed somewhere along the line.

anyway you can make anything from a restaurant at home if you want and some salads are actually relatively labour intensive or difficult to source.

I agree with OP. Good guy OP. Same with fucking sandwiches. Going to a restaurant is not only for the social aspect but for the labour-free aspect. Going to a restaurant and ordering a salad (as long as its a simple salad which 99% of the time it is) or a sandwich is terrible on the labour-saving aspect of the restaurant.

Why would I pay someone 10$ to make me a salad I could make JUST AS WELL for like 1.50$. It doesn't have anything to do with the social aspect of a restaurant either as what you order has nothing to do with the social aspect. Whether you order a salad or a steak (same thing as salads and sandwiches) or something that actually takes skill and time to make has 0 impact on the social nature of the restaurant.

It's the same as going tot he grocery store and buying a premade or precut things. "Why would I buy a whole pineapple for 1$ when I could buy half of a pineapple already cut up for 3$?"

>But what if you want a salad right now?

The only reason you would want a salad is because you don't have the discipline to control what you want. You are an undisciplined man-child who lives in the moment rather than thinking ahead. If you go to a restaurant and order something you have the ability to make yourself then you are an idiot. It's not about fiscal responsibility, it's about having the integrity to and discipline to know what you are capable of doing. So you hold off what you want now, get something you don't have the skill to make, then later you make yourself a salad.

You're compromising overall appreciation of food for a short-sighted impulse decision.

Move out of flyover land. I order salads when I go out all the time. Fuck, my friends love going out to eat, but I'm not always hungry enough for a real meal, so I order a salad so I can eat while everyone else does instead of sitting there not eating, or worse, home alone because I have no friends.

Well lets say you wanted an ahi nicoise salad. You would drive to a specialty fishmonger since most grocery stores won't sell tuna unless theyre crazy busy, which is quite rare. Then you'd have to buy a single egg, good luck with that, you can then whip out the sous-vide tank you have at home to make a perfect 63 degree egg, meanwhile spend 30 minutes slow simmering new potatos, and simultaniously blanching some green beans.

While thats going on you can make a nice tarragon and anchovy vinegarette with shallots, mustard, and some nice olive oil.

Then you can pickle some red onions that are thinly sliced and finally you can combine all of these ingredients very nicely into a quaint little bowl.

And finally a trip to the farmers market to pick up some heirloom tomatoes, cut based on size.

I would estimate the time it would take to get all of this together from scratch would probably be around an hour assuming a 20 minute travel time there and back from the grocery store, as well as waiting in line, and I would guess that if you also had no staples at home to create this salad you'd be looking at spending around 30-40 dollars.

Or you could just drop 15 bucks at a restaurant and someone would do it all for you.

Enjoy living a life of ignorance OP, hopefully one day I can be as ignorant as you so I won't think so much.

There are people posting on this board right now that will restrain themselves from ordering what they want at a restaurant if they can make it at home instead.

There are people here right now that are literally so autistic they will not order things on a restaurant menu not because of price or taste, but because of some strange sense of self-sufficiency.

I would just wonder why they wouldn't want to take advantage of being at the restaurant and get something new, or fancy. Something they couldn't feasibly get anywhere but there.

You should determine what that restaurant probably makes best and that should inspire you to get the best culinary experience. Going in with the mindset of "I want X and I'm going to get it no matter what because I don't feel like anything else" is sad and boring. Sounds like the kind of people who put sex on their calendar.

Yeah, because it's pretty easing making an authentic Cesar salad with egg yolks and anchovies and parmesan and dressing it up and decorating the plate. Making a stew or a braise or a risotto or grilling on the other hand is such hard work right?

Is this thread for real? Like seriously? I mean you can make prime rib and a baked potato and salad at home. You can make rolls at home. You can make fried chicken at home. Who gives a fuck. If you are saying something is not worth money because you can make it at home but yet state you're financially stable and don't care about money because you have so much..I don't get it. The whole point isn't that it is something you can't make at home. It's because A: you want it right then and don't have time to make it or B: you just want to go some where and hang out with friends or family or both and have a decent meal without having to do all the work yourself. Restaurants are for socialization as well as food. Take my job for example. I work on average a minimum of 3-4 hours from home. I stay in a lot of hotels. Yeah at home I can make some good stuff. But guess what? I'm not at home. You want me to drive to a grocery store and buy everything for a salad, bring it to my hotel room, make a salad and throw all the rest away making a $3 salad cost me like $15 because of waste? However, it's not an excuse to go to shitty ass McDick and all that. I tried that at first. The whole fast food thing. Not a chance. I never felt as nasty as I did the time I chose to spend a week eating fast food and pizza out of a hotel room in eastern Tennessee. But even if the ground hog did see his shadow, who gives a fuck? But seriously are light years a measure of time or a measure of distance? Still confused on that one. But PLEASE SAVE THE ORANGUTANS

People dine out for a variety of overlapping reasons:
status display
convenience
special occasions
the desire to eat something the don't make at home
the fun of eating out

Depending on your perspective ordering something you could easily make at home could seem like a waste because there are many other things on the menu that you'd never make at home, so as long as you're out why not order one of those things?

But if you're eating out for convenience and/or fun, and you feel like eating a salad why the fuck shouldn't you order one?

Your perspective on this is probably shaped by how often you eat out and your reasons for doing so.

Let me add:

When my life is operating on a regular schedule and I have the time to cook at home I never order stuff I'd make at home when dining out.

But when my schedule gets crazy with travel or working odd hours I eat restaurant food far more often. At times like that leaning toward the lighter side of the menu becomes a matter of self-preservation. Ordering with too much gusto when you're eating out everyday is the fast train to becoming a fatass.
