In response to this - there are essentially two kinds of /ck/ poster. One type is into home cooking, sharing recipes, trying new things, posting cook-alongs and verticals (posting pictures of a recipe step by step) and generally contributing to the board, and the other kind only posts about fast food, /r9k/ and /pol/ crossboarders who derail every thread and don't contribute new or interesting content. I'd say most posters are the first type, but the second posters are louder.

The portions are actually a healthy medium. People get the misconception that Japanese eat small portions, because they see the high end restaurant shit with 2 slices of Kobe for 30 bucks.

Protein is generally expensive and portioned small, but they consume massive amounts of carbs--noodles and rice with their food. I was shocked how much ramen I'd see them put down.

I've found that places with decent cheap wine are always worthwhile. I live in Manhattan, and while every local says that Little Italy is a tourist trap shithole, I've found a couple of places that make inexpensive decent food and have really really cheap house wine in an area of the city full of super expensive food and drinks.
An entire bottle of table wine in NYC for 16 bucks is insane, but it's not on the menu, so tourists would never find out.

I'm in IT, systems engineer for a hospital system. I make a good living but very much middle class.

Traveling isn't as expensive as people think it is. I'm fortunate to have a well travelled background so I'm familiar with the land and can do it without getting conned.

All these places we eat are 10-20$ per person plates, save a couple of em where we splurged to try something specific.

I like a japanese food quite a lot but I dont like japanese portion sizes. Don't get me wrong, I'm not fat (I weight a bit less than 50 kgs) but I only eat once per day and I like to have a decent sized meal.

The trips involved a lot of walking as a tourist. A LOT. Both us us actually lost weight.
