>Businessman etiquette

I had lunch with some business guys in the /tech/ industry a while back and here's something I noticed about them

>We're eating at a nice place
>They order food and don't finish
>They order again and the food comes, they have food left over on their plate
>Why do they do this? I had to do the same thing out of peer pressure but why do all leave food on the table to waste meanwhile I'm trying to finish my plate...

>> No.9478083

I assume they want to leave room to try other dishes this makes sense if you're ordering a 5 course meal and actually want to make it through all 5. I went to fancy steakhouse and was treated to a 5 course meal and I finished everything but then again I can put down a lot of food.

That's exactly my point. Cleaning you plate shows you were raised by people who had insecurity about food. Very common in the US as well, particularly Boomers whose parents lived through the Depression and WWII. But that's exactly my point with regard to OP post. If you're in the position to be eating out at nice places without giving it a second thought you're definitely beyond the point of food insecurity, so there's no reason to eat like you are, especially in public.

This.

In countries outside of the US, this is a clear sign that you were raised without class.

And yes, it's not great that Class = ability to waste *some* food. But leaving a pile of food on your plate also has the opposite effect.

The only people I've seen pick every last rice grain from their bowl were Chinese engineers who were trying to follow culture, but calculated their tip down to the penny and asked for change... I'm not joking..

Try L-Theanine or Taurine. They're anxiolytics that naturally occur in food (theanine in tea, taurine in shrimp among others.)

Look up cortisol and do whatever lowers it.

Anxiety and depression sometimes considered an evolutionary response to low social status, so ironically, by self-medicating them, you can make people believe you are of higher status. It's a chicken and egg thing - is this guy relaxed because he has nothing to worry about, or does he have nothing to worry about because he's relaxed?

I'd recommend you read as much as you can about glutamate and GABA.

Being a bit retarded, just like OP, I tend to order half/quarter portions of courses within the menu and am therefore able to finish all of them.
Maybe research is more lax about this, but I've always had positive feedback and even if someone frowns and asks, it serves as a quick conversation starter (sustainability etc.) which [so far] always went smoothly.

If I have to take a shit I do it in a public toilet to save on the water bill and unfurl more toilet paper than I need for use later. I take an excess amount of sugar and sauces if I eat out, which I rarely do because I can cook using bulk bought goods. I take all the free samples, all the coupons. I try to sell all the stuff I don't need and collect anything that I can get away with. If I can't I accumulate it in a huge bundle and sell it all for $5 to someone who thinks they can. It's totally true that most people around you are oblivious and really don't notice you in any meaningful way. But those who see you often notice patterns, and if your behavior is always autistic and "off" compared to everybody else they will come to think of you as that weird guy. If you're good at your job no one cares if you're the weird guy, especially in fields full of weird guys such as tech, engineering or anything creative. But it can hold back your career. If you look at the guys at or near the executive level they're almost always reasonably well socialized and have a political understanding about how corporate culture operates. ITT: people with no self awareness. A business lunch with people you're not close with is not a pig out session, even if you've been traveling all day and you just got to the restaurant from the airport, you control yourself and eat at a normal pace, in normal quantities, unless it's people you're already very comfortable with. Don't be the only person drinking alcohol. Don't be the only person NOT drinking alcohol. Don't order dessert when nobody else did. Don't skip dessert if everyone else is ordering, even if you are on a diet, eat the god damm dessert. Unless you just ordered a small soup or a salad, it's better to leave a little food than scrape the plate clean. If the food is spectacular it is acceptable to comment but don't make UNNNGH noises and don't make more than one comment. Do not show off your autism with respect to alcoholic beverages, no one gives a shit that the scotch selection sucks. If the wine is corked, keep your mouth shut.

The focus of the meal should not be on your own idiosyncrasies, or how hungry you are.

there are way too many posts to read but i just went through a class that talked about business dining and they specifically said to not clean your plate

which is stupid but that's apparently what they're teaching

>> No.9493963

Not cleaning you plate shows you were raised by people who had insecurity about food.

You obviously got all of your information from movies. Autists can be good at more than one thing and have multiple interests, or not have an amazing skill at all. The key bit is the obsession part

It's the culture in Asia not to finish your plate while dining at someone else's home - instead, you leave a couple of mouthfuls on your plate, and a little bit in your glass - this is to pre-empt offers of more food or drink from a host that's expected to be attentive to these things. There's a similar system in place for dining out if you aren't going Dutch - but as a matter of course one doesn't lick one's plate clean outside of like fast food.

I've found that North American restaurants tend to give more food than the equilavent Asian one, so I leave some food on the plate while dining so I don't become a big boy. I guess you could say its a waste of food, but there's no shortage of food in the West.

My family and I never did the doggy-bag thing - if we want to eat a particular dish again we'll just come back to the restaurant another day

>I think he means if you just wolf everything down in a hurry instead of taking time to enjoy the food and the company.
Underrated post. This is what really matters in any social dining. Don't be an asshole by focusing more on the food than on the people you want to be on the good side of, unless it's the topic of conversation.

I've had dinner with some Chinese businessmen and they don't clear their plate either, but worrying whether or not they're going to judge you for not doing the same makes you worse off. Relax and have a good fucking time you autists.

No , it does not necessarily show this, because people might clean their plate because they enjoyed the food and wanted to get every bite of it, or because they are hungry.

Assuming that the reason must be only one explanation when several likely alternate explanations exist is low-IQ thinking.
