Buy a thermometer. The steak has a certain springiness at medium rare when you touch it. Remember what that feels like, and eventually you won't need a thermometer for steak.

Rare is pretty much the same firmness of raw, i.e. your finger leaves an indentation which lasts a couple of seconds. As soon as you notice the slightest change and the meat begins to spring back a bit more and feels slightly more firm, you have medium rare.
