Well the picture is misleading. To me, it appears to be slices of goat mozzarella or something, like a traditional margherita.

It's not.

In reality, they're like big globs of ricotta just sitting on top of the pizza, and they kind of liquefy when you bite into them. Absolutely repulsive.

I got this pizza from a local place. It sounded so good.

But it was a white pie, with breadcrumbs underneath the cheese. The texture was awful. It felt like eating sand pizza.

Had a pizza at some little shack on top of a mountain in Romania years back, was absolute fucking shit; tomato sauce was sweet, cheese barely melted and it had this weird cubed ham on it that was like rubbery bacon bits.

Industrial food and the birth of convenience food in post WWII America. Companies got good at making canned, dried and condensed food to ship overseas and fuel the war effort. Things like condensed soup and SPAM are good examples. After the war these companies still had the infrastructure and a product to sell and had to convince the American public to eat what was essentially war rations. During the war, most women had to join the workforce while the men were overseas fighting, this didn't change after the war ended. The paradigm had shifted and the vanishing standard of a single income earner household began. Enter Jello. Until Jello became popular in the mid century Gelatin was only used in very high end restaurants because it is very labor intensive and required technique to produce. In the 1960s Jello took off as it was something impressive that a woman could whip up and was considered new and novel. Dinner parties in that time were an opportunity for a woman to show off and usually involved an "Impressive" centerpiece dish. Many times it involved some sort of jello "salad" like you see above or some such other monstrosity.

I found a cookbook from the 60's at a thrift store once and made some recipes from it that I could still find the ingredients it called for for giggles. I knew it would be bad but jesus let me tell you it was some of the worst shit I've ever eaten .The unnatural texture contrast between lime jello and crisp asparagus is fucking otherworldly. I actually like looking through old cookbooks when I find them. People in the 50s and 60s didn't season food for shit.
