Ive got a Le Creuset, but I used a cheap hand-me-down for several years before that. Cooks exactly the fucking same. Check at home goods (if there's one near you) for a good deal.

Just looked on amazon and the lodge enamel cast iron dutch oven looks like a good buy for not much money.

This is bullshit. Nobody throws away food to show status/wealth. People may over-order at restaurants, but typically the insane portion size is the fault of the restaurant industry. Yes most american homes have garbage disposals, but thats for little scraps like an orange peel or the end of a carrot, not for stuffing a hole turkey down it.
