ITT: shitty engineering
I was driving angrily last night and I spotted a john durr lawn mower on the side of the road, I went back and put it in the trunk because the deck looked good.Thinking I might use it to swap my cub engine onto because the deck has holes and cracks in it from being sandblasted for 12 years.
I was curious so I tried to see if I could if maybe there was just some minor problem, so I went to take off the cowling and the pull starter so I could hook up a drill to spin the motor and check for spark.
Which I found this piece of shit.
They riveted the pull starter assembly to a large metal cover piece which surrounds half the engine, which you have to remove some plastic ring, the gas tank, and even the dip stick tube, which leaves the engine oil open to just have shit fall in.
On the cub it's 4 screws to remove the plastic cover, and 3 10mm nuts to remove the pull start assembly.
The deck is wider by 2 inches, and by proxy about 2 on everything else, so I'll probably just end up just using it for material to patch the cub deck instead of trying to adapt all the cub shit to this one

How was anything in this post asking a question?
I already took the whole thing apart, I just want people to show shit that is poorly engineered that they have run into while doing their own diy shit.

Well, judging by their tractors, you can't expect much for Jonh Deere.

I don't really know what I expected, I know cub is owned by MTD, and I haven't exactly heard great things about MTD, so I expected it to be at least as decent as the Cub.
I am not delusional enough to think that these companies that acquire the names of once famous machinery manufactures to do anything besides exploit brand recognition, but riveting on an assembly that is probably the most likely failure point of any sort of consumer grade gas powered outdoor machinery was even for me a bit of a shock.

it appears you don't understand "engineering" while a bit over-engineered the Germans would consider that engine under-engineered. it's not exactly shitty engineering. shitty engineering would be... a yugo.

Rivets are cheaper and I assume, like other companies, they don't expect the owner to do their own repairs.
And if you decide to replace the starter, since it's a John Deere mower, you are going to pay John Deere prices.

I have run into this situation with other brands and have found I could get, in my case the metal shroud, drill out the rivets and replace them with screws.
However, being JD, it may only be available as the combined unit.

>>1709893
Of course they are cheaper from a manufacturing standpoint, but given the name, I would've thought they would have pretended just the slightest to care about serviceability, on a lower end machine I understand.
Given the size and complexity of the large sheet metal houseing as well as the holes they had to drill and tap on the engine itself to mount it, compared to the cub, where it just has 3 studs coming out with no extra pieces, it seems foolish to me.
Then again I am not a bean counter engineering products to fail in a way best to encourage the customer to purchase a new product.

Given from what limited things I have heard in regard to their modern, mainline farming equipment when it comes to non authorized repair, that sounds like it is applicable to the entire company.

Tbh push lawnmowers should be unserviceable. It's the most polluting thing you can own because noone gives a fuck. I'm glad their making them disposable. Quite frankly should be banned. Noone respects them.
>>1709945
Repeat business. The stihl repair/sales guy here has a push mechanical mower. Refuses to have a gas or electric one. We should really go back to these simpler times.

>shitty engineering
Bro you wouldn't know the definition of shitty engineering if it fucked you in the ass. That unit did what it was meant to do. Be disposable and get em to buy another. And I bet it cut grass just fine until it was abused into death. Betcha 5 bux you clean the machine it'll run just fine. That is not shitty engineering, nor is planned obscelence.

>Tbh push lawnmowers should be unserviceable. It's the most polluting thing you can own because noone gives a fuck.

Push mowers cause pollution, so we better make them disposable, so not only do they cause pollution when initially manufactured, then used, then get to be dumped in the trash so someone can buy another one that causes pollution to be manufactured, genius.

Every manufacturing process causes pollution, genius. Lawnmowers are the least cared for ICE and noone cares about their emissions. As such they are the worst, cc per cc.
>no egr
>no catalytic
>not even a fucking throttle on many
>carbed
>low compression

Literally the worst tool you can own besides your car.

Not gonna lie, it's kind of stupid that the super light econoboxes and Smart Cars are subject to the same emissions regulations that my 7000lb pickup is. For the same distance (in the city; highway is decent), my truck will dump anywhere from 2-3x the pollutants as a smaller car simply due to the difference in mass.

look for an old honda that has MADE IN JAPAN written on it
only way you're gonna get some quality products
bricks and scrap iron is just trash. find a problem, hack around it, and resell as fast as possible to the next retard who forgets to change the oil.
then you buy it back for 10% the cost, put a pipe around the blade and wrench it free. new oil, sell again. rinse and repeat. lmao.

you both are fools. It is engineered excellently... from a business and service contract pov. The engineers did their job in making it a fucking pain to service and replace so that JD could make bank off of having to service it. Even if they don't directly service it, the 3rd parties that do have to buy special tools, parts, fluids, etc... from the company so there's yet another revenue stream
