Will soon be moving in to my very nice house in a very bad area, and am wondering what measures to take in order to secure myself. I've looked into locks that are difficult to pick and reinforcing doors, but what other measures can I take that don't make my house look like a gaol in the process? Guns aren't an option in my country unfortunately.

Lights. Just light every inch of your property up.
>but it's expensive anon
Yes it is. You could have those lights that have timers, but it doesn't excuse the fact that you're expending some tiny bit of electricity that'll probably show up as cents on your bill.

Cameras. Same deal with lights, so you could buy those fake ones that look real enough. Some of them have AA batteries so they blink and even rotate. Anything to dissuade the robber from ever entering.

Aside from that I don't know what else to say, everything beyond this is basically Kevin McCallister-tier.

really? thats short as hell, your average neighborhood jogger would be able to clear it, let alone a doberman.

Get a dog. People don't wanna screw around with a place that has a dog. If you can't have a firearm, have a baseball bat or golf club next to the door for when you answer. Knives are cool and all, bit it tends to end in a wrestling match and everyone involved gets cut up.

dont do this. one in the kitchen, one in the bedroom, one in the living room, and one in the bathroom for when you literally get caught with your pants down.

All fences are scalable. That's not what makes them obsolete. The fact that there is a fence there to begin with, requiring someone to scale it, is the intended purpose of a fence. That and privacy. Now anon just has to get REAL cameras so that if in the event someone wants to trespass, it is caught on camera.

Not OP, but my city/county requires me to pull a permit to build a fence taller than 6’. I was originally gonna build one out of wood before covid jacked up the prices on lumber. I currently have a rock wall separating my houses from the others next to me, but the fence is only about 3-4’ high. If I build inside my property line is it commonly considered that’s something I don’t have to bother the neighbors over? I was gonna sink 10’ 4x4s about 4’ into the ground with sackrete then just put horizontal slats along the top 2 of the posts.

I don’t know what would be a cheaper alternative material besides wood for this

You don’t need a dog.
You only need the niggers to think you have a dog
Post beware of vicious dog signs front and back
Use the sign with pictures because most niggers can’t read

Change the locks for something Abloy or Medeco. Make sure the frames of all exterior doors are well built and or reinforced. Motion lights and cameras. Just look at what your neighbors have and do more without being flashy, and crims will most likely be deterred.

To go into the locks a bit more. The pick-ability of a lock isn't the real factor, but the actual hardware of higher security locks is way better made and has anti cutting and drilling features throughout.

I live in a poor area in the usa, so I'm very well versed with this. Here are my thoughts and experiences in no particular order.

There is a reason why do many poor households have pitbulls. No one wants to fuck with them. Of my neighbors, both sides and behind me have pitbulls.

Getting better locks to prevent picking is useless. Locks keep people innocent, that's it. Get a standard one, and a good deadbolt, and if you're that worried make sure all exterior doors are metal and reinforce the jamb. Ideally the locking plate should be 3 feet long or more, and attached to the jamb with at least 3 inch screws. Nails are even better but a pain in the ass.

Lights are a big one, but please put them on timers. My neighbors have huge blue-white halide or some shit floodlights they leave on all night, but even normal led warm white are annoying if they are always on. I do astronomy so they are particularly annoying. My advice would be to get motion detecting lights, you can get solar ones that are pretty bright and mount onto walls.

You should have a safe and have it mounted to the floor, if it's small enough for someone to lift. It doesn't need to be a security safe, a fire safe is fine. You should have one of these anyway. It won't stop someone really determined, but will increase the time it takes to get your truly valuable shit

Security systems are cheap and poplar. 24/7 monitored I know people like but I don't personally have them. Window/door break detectors that alarm are cheap and if they make a loud enough noise will work fine.

High fences are nice. I'm assuming you have a yard, fence it in. People don't steal what they can't see. Leaving things like propane tanks where people can see them is asking for them to get stolen

Cameras can be nice, but imo the only place they are worth it is pointing at your car in the driveway, and possibly entryways. I know some people have cameras inside, I don't think that's worth it.

>> No.2049146

>>2049144
Also, get an automatic timer or smart lights and have one near a window turn on and off if you're out of town, so it looks like someone is home.

Remember, you can't be at home protecting your house 24/7. Having a gun is nice but useless if you're not home. The key is to make your house just enough of a hassle to deter burglars. It's unfortunate that people need to go through such things, but if you have a big house with an expense car and ~look~ wealthy, people will get ideas.

This is a good segue to something else: If you don't have as much thought put into your fire safety as you do for intruders, you're just living out some weird media fantasy instead of actually guarding against likely problems.

You fucked up the number one rule OP. It’s better to live in the shittiest house in a nice neighborhood than to live in the nicest house in a shitty neighborhood. You’re now target number one not just for crimes of opportunity, but likely from your neighbors as well. Hope your schedule is irregular :^)

Physical and mental barriers are key.
>physical: deadbolts, reinforced windows
>mental: cameras, fencing, lighting, ADT sign
You're not trying to prevent a siege here. You're making it so that the intruders need to make a scene or take extra time to break into the property, which makes them not want to enter at all.
As a security technician, I'll be the first to say that residential alarm monitoring is a huge waste of money. It's really unreliable and slow. What you could do is install cameras with alarms, so if the cameras detect motion within a certain area, they alert you. Then you can check your phone, and if shit is going down, call 911.
