Fan resistor is bad in a Cadillac I'm looking at pic related it cost almost $200 I'm assuming that transiter on it is a voltage regulator could I just change that out and would it cross to some thing easier to find

>> No.1976941

see if another GM model uses the resistor and use that part number

do you think that would be the part that is probably bad

What's the specifics of your caddy. As in year, model, motor. I'm a discount cadillac mechanic, and might be able to help you here.

That's an SJ41042 transistor in a TO-3 case. They can be had starting at $6.00. It might be worthwhile just changing it before dropping $200 on the whole module.

Make sure you get all of the mounting hardware, particularly the insulating pads, put in correctly.

Oh yeah, almost forgot. You would e well advised to look for a 'snubber diode' somewhere in the module. Connected across the output (to the fan). They will appear to be connected in reverse (polarity band connected to positive terminal). They protect the transistor and often when you have a blown transistor, it's because the snubber blew first. Couple of bucks. Might as well check or just replace white you are in there.

meh, just throw in a 2N3055

>> No.1977338

if you just swap the transistor, be careful where you buy a new one from because that package style has tons of fakes

just use something with better ratings thats the same type. doesnt even need to be same package. the leads wont break off if its a heavy duty big package decent wattage one. put anotehr heat sink on it and bolt that heat sink to one of the fins of the heatsink thats present. a hole wont fuck it so if you get the original bjt it had later you can reverse what you did. can types tend to have a terminal on can so just wire it up properly. it can vary but i want to say its collector more often than no . i could be wrong

That looks like an actual resistor

find a local PIck-n-Pull, remove it from a junker yourself, pay less money for a used part.
