Hey /diy/ so I'm trying to get this drain ring out but the plate snapped off and now it's just the threads. I've tried using the drain key tool to get them out but it just slips. Any ideas on removal?

Looks like you’re going to have to cut it out. Get a mini hacksaw to do this. Don’t cut it too much, or you will fuck up the female threads of the drain shoe. It looks like PVC, so at least it won’t be fused in there. Use Teflon and a little smear of plumbers grease when tightening in the new one.

>>1513244
Sounds like a good plan the only problem is the pipe moves around quite a bit so it's difficult to put any pressure on it without it just giving way.

That’s pvc for you. Is it exposed below? Have someone hold the pipe while you cut. Otherwise, you might have to open the ceiling.

No way to get below it in the crawl space too much plumbing and shit in the way. I was thinking maybe some sort of extended wrench to grab the tabs on the union nut and tighten it down

Try wrapping a lint trap around your drain tool. Or sharpen the skinniest screwdriver you have, take a mini hacksaw and saw in two or three pieces and peel it out. Use a high quality plumbers paste like tru blue and ptfe tape, plumbers putty to install the new one.

>>1513238
Can you not get in there from below, just replace the whole shoe, bring down a new one to cut to match the old one?

use small stiff hand saw, not flexible like a hacksaw. If you don't want to buy a handle for it, just a fine toothed reciprocating saw (sawzall) blade wrapped with tape at your end will work.
You carefully cut a slit through the threads vertically, just through the metal enough that you can start prying it away from the plastic drain shoe with a flat head screwdriver or such. If you get it good enough you can use needle nose pliers to grab and tear inwards to peel and twist it into itself. One a certain amount has pulled away the whole thing should start to unscrew.
If you have no luck trying to get it to fold inwards, you can cut another slit nearby and try to just remove a section and then the rest will come out easy
Just like removing broken off pipe threads out of a fitting socket and kind of like taking a broken light bulb out with pliers

>>1513238
Wonder if you can heat it up enough to bend the edge inward and use pliers to grab on a unscrew it, not so hot you melt the pvc.

Wedge tha short side of an Allen wrench with a chunk of folded newspaper. And turn the long side with a crescent. I'm to dumb to post an image but if you look at an exhaust stud removal socket. Same idea.

Pic related, OP.
You said crawl space, but why am i seeing an electrical box.
Matter of point it looks like it's firred out for drywall below...

>> No.1515874

'Fess up, OP.
That ain't a crawl space.
You don't want to cut through a ceiling.

Sorry I just don't know the correct term for it the problem is I'm not sure it can support that weight. I'm worried about causing more harm than good

>> No.1515881

>>1515876
No, it won't support your weight;
Now go find the light fixture that is almost directly below your point of contention (bad place) and move a foot to the right and a foot forward;
You will be under it then.
Cut carefully, there's wires about.

Yeah that's what I was assuming I would have to do. The only thing I'm wary about is texturing the spackle after I patch it

...and to further say,
If you get the thing out, you aren't going to be able to get a new one back in plumbing tight from the top side.
Suck it.
You have to go through the drywall below.
Find your boards that the drywall is hanging on, look for where the screws are if it's unfinished, and cut a nice square that you can put right back in and finish on another day.
This may be harder than it sounds.

I might have some pointers.

Ok, good news. You don't have to guess too much where that was cut.
scrape some of that shit to find the screw holes so you know where to cut to, or just cut a fucking hole and figure out how much you have to take.
I would go all the way back to the corner, since it's fucked anyway; give yourself room to work.
So, that texture has been fixed before; this has been a problem before, of course, i think there should always be an access panel below these things.
Fuck aestetics.
Anyway, you need some new green board, mesh tape, knife for compound, inside corner knife, joint compound.
The texture has been rolled on with a regular roller.
Take some compound after you have attempted to finish the drywall, put some water in, not much, and work it together.
Stick your roller in there, roll it on.
Prime, Paint.

It has occurred to me, OP, that I don't see a fixture where that electrical box should be...
I hope you didn't cut into a buried junction box and are dead.
(It won't be the first time DIY has killed someone)
Check in, with progress, hopefully.
