Hello /diy/, im looking for some guidance setting up a cheap but holefully effective solar setup for an older jeep.
1-Are the sub $100 kits on amazon any good? I am not looking to make tea, or run a hitachi off it. Just charging a laptop, and preventing charging battery draw issues when out camping remotely
2-I am thinking I should just use my main charging battery as a reserve, but would a sub $60 cheap battery be adviseable?
3-I am thinking of building a small roof basket, with the base housing the panel. Is it a waste of time to build it fixed angle?
3-any advice on kits?

thanks /diy/ !

and
Mighty Max Battery ML18-12 - 12V 18AH CB19-12 SLA AGM Rechargeable Deep Cycle Battery

This should give me a complete secondary electrical system for tiny RV, I have various fuse blocks, breakers, etc.

>Just charging a laptop,
What kind of laptop? Post pic of laptop transformer info. Some laptops especially gaming draw a decent amount of wattage.

18AH 12V, with a fully charged battery you have more or less 100 available watts

will be ok for LED ligts and ocasional tiny 12 volt appliances.

I’m with the other anon here about this, looks interesting but keep us updated

The best bet isn't solar but a small inverter generator and a UPS power supply. The genny should be able to charge the UPS giving you stable computer power. Also the genny can run anything else directly not as sensitive.

Cheapest generator i see is a $400 hf... and then i would have to carry gas.... which isnt quite feasible. I would love to be able to run more power-expensive electronics, but its just not in the cards.

One of the main goals i have is to have a secondary electrical system. To sleep easier with a radio on while remote camping, knowing im an hour drive away from anyone who could give me a jump start... worst case scenario hopefully i could self jump off my solar battery.

I got the panel and controller today, next step is getting and mouting the second battery.

You do not understand how long it will take to charge a battery with a cheap solar panel. The generator is your only option.

So a second/ house battery. Locate it wherever convenient but if stored inside better it be a agm.

Google "cheap 50$ battery isolator.

Poke around here in the 12v section for similar tech.
