all of these can be right simultaneously. the subculture diverged in many different directions. people who grew up in the 2000s and have more recently been to college grew into these many fragmented subcultures so they'll deny they're in any way connected to past hipsters but they kind of all are in one way or another. we're all hipsters now.

Honestly, this. I was pretty hipstery, I lived in Logan Square Chicago, went through all the small phases (bikes, thrifting, beards, smoking cliche' brands, indie/folk, etc)

Now I work a 9-5 in a suit. Pretty much the only way you can tell is that I have a hisptery looking beard still, a few basic tattoos, and I have a lot of shitty indie bands i continue to listen to.

And yeah, the big reason for a lot of "small pleasures" was simply being broke as fuck after college in 2008ish; I can't really afford a vacation, but I can afford a nice coffee or a cigarette.
