seems to me the jacket is meant to be worn in a riding position i.e. with the arms forward. shoulders that are as close-fitted as a tailored suit jacket would restrict movement.

just imagine wearing a suit jacket that "fits you properly" while biking, except imagine that the jacket fastens all the way up to the chin and is made out of cowhide. it doesn't make much sense.

I bought a 1960's biker jacket from a vet some years back for squat - 75 USD. It fit wrong, obv. What I did was look up a rare breed of tailor - Leather jacket tailors. They exist. They aren't cheap.
$200 later, I was left with a jacket that fit my torso and arms to the letter - not to mention the 50+ years of wear it had already seen. I prefer it to a fashion designer's iteration of the garment, because it offers range of motion in the shoulders and a perfect fit everywhere else. It's fading nicely, too.

I was in john varvatos last year and saw old, semi rehabbed but ultimately shitty biker jackets selling as 'vintage' (which they were) for upwards of $1500. IMO I made the right choice. It's a roundabout solution to the problem, but I wouldn't choose another option.

I also kind of like the pre-existing age of it - a leather jacket will outlive YOU, if it's properly made. You can give it to your son when you hit 70. He can do the same. I think leather looks best broken in a bit, sheen worn down, otherwise it's at odds with the subculture that first popularized it in American fashion (rough and tumble bikers). This initial breaking in can take years! As I age, this jacket will age with me.

That's all just my opinion, tho. I def see where you're coming from about the niceties of a fresh new Schott or whatever else you have in mind. I'm just a sucker for garments with history.

That was not the final answer, tho - You remember Boris Badijan Saberi? You remember how he was famous for those treated leather jackets he sold? They had a very nifty texture and strangely distressed leather. I saw it years back and I started looking into how that leather BBS jacket was made, especially the texture and "supple stiffness" of whatever process he was using on his leather.

It turns out he was using a combination of surfactants, centrifugal motion and timed heat. Surfactants are the chemicals that make liquid detergents work. They were invented in the 50's and used exclusively for TIDE detergent.

He also uses tumbling and heat. Sounds like a washing machine! I took a leap and washed the tailored piece 15+ times in hot water loaded with enough tide for 3 washes. Every time I washed it, it got a little better. When I started drying it in the machine instead of by air, the effect got even better. According to my tape, the measurements of the piece didn't change from the ones I took before I began the washing process.

Between the heat, the detergents and the moisture, the jacket just... changed. It put on twenty years without changing color or being damaged. It's now harder (pretty stab proof in a lotta places), has that distressed BBS texture, kinda waxy... Also, the collar now stands up and stays up, as you can see in the pic.

It's just... It's a sorta DIY thing, and you can't ever buy that experience for any amount of money (IME), because the garment is essentially for ME, and it was distressed by me, it was me who went to the tailor 3x a week to watch him deconstruct the jacket and help him re-drape certain parts according to my measurements and the visual effect I wanted the jacket to give off when reassembled.

Glad I took the time.

I had to leave the shoulders and arm holes a bit wide - I discovered when I first started seriously scoping a leather jacket that slimmer shoulders don't allow for the same range of motion. I musta hit ten stores, and I was ready to drop way too much money on some shit from the cast or acne or SLP, but I just couldn't feel 100% about anything I tried.

A friend with a background in tailoring explained how these jackets' patterns are cut out, and why the patterns and construction would get in my way of making drastic changes to a traditional leather intended for biking.

I needed something I could crawl through a tunnel with, scrape on floor or wall and not worry about. Something with enough toughness to withstand actual riding and offer protection. These stitches have all been reworked with riding and protection in mind. An SLP will turn to dust and leather panels if you hit the pavement with it doing 35. It's all soft, it's not enough armor. It's also restrictive and looks too monied.

There had to be a compromise between form and function. I fit it where I could and tried to work with the shoulders by exaggerating the silhouette of the rest of the jacket. Overall, It's an inverted triangle - a good shape for men, IMO. I had extra fabric when the arms were tapered, so I had the curve of the sleeve exaggerated a bit.

The belt is buckled into itself behind the back and fixed in place with matte black steel brackets that can't really be noticed. It adds something, to have the belt so cleanly folded back onto itself, bracing the lower half of the back panel.

When you wear it open, the draping loop of steel grommets and leather is sorta rickish, in a way. It adds another shape to your silhouette and complements layering.

Sometimes a hybrid can offer the best of both worlds by existing entirely in its own.

pic related is my jacket, my father bought it in the 80s and it has seen some use, he made multiple tours through Europe and wore this jacket on most of them. When he married my mom he stopped riding his bike though and sold it some years ago, he stopped wearing the jacket too and stored it in the attic, were it hung for around 20 years. When we found it, the leather was in a very bad condition and it smelled very badly, plus the interior has a big burned spot at the back, because he hung it over his exhausting pipe at one trip. I had the leather refurbished for approx. 100€ and may dad gave the jacket to me. It's my favorite peaces of clothing and it's really durable, he fell from his bike wearing it, I fell wearing it, when I was skating a couple of times, but the leather is undamaged.

I recommend sizing down 1-2 depending on the jacket.

Best idea: try it on. Stay away from inexpensive jackets.

Excellent advice. The most important thing to do here is to try the jacket on, and make sure that when yo do so you're wearing what you PLAN to wear when wearing the jacket i.e. the correct jeans or trousers you want to wear at the right height, any sweaters or just a plain t if that's what you want to wear underneath it, etc.

Jacket sizing is all over the place, sometimes within brands. Belstaff is notorious for having sizing problems within (i.e. a medium in one style is not the same as a medium in another). Schott is known for having sleeves that are too long and stomachs that are too generous in off-the-rack jackets. One could go on and on, so try on the jacket and go from there.

In terms of durability, you're looking at Horsehide>Bison>Buffalo>Cow>Goat>Lamb

If you want pliability, style, and choice material, you're looking at
Kangaroo>Lamb>Suede> and all the rest.

If you're looking at the double-rider, the best choice is Horse by far, though it takes years to wear in and they are very expensive. The next down is normally cow or some tougher hide.

I disagree. Cowhide is fine, and it can look awesome on the right style of jacket. It's also tough enough to be used on biker jackets as a protective material, and because of the larger grain, it distresses amazingly well.
