What the fuck is wrong with normal people and biker jackets?

Look at the customer's uploaded pictures of this biker jacket. Not a single one of them chose the right size. They all chose over-sized jackets that do not fit them properly specially on the shoulder area. The epaulets don't fit their shoulders and end up being part of the sleeves and the sleeves themselves are extremely long in almost every single one of them.

Can't they see that regardless of whether they can pull off the jacket or whether it looks good on them the jacket they are wearing is over-sized and because of this it looks horrendous on them?

seems to me the jacket is meant to be worn in a riding position i.e. with the arms forward. shoulders that are as close-fitted as a tailored suit jacket would restrict movement.

just imagine wearing a suit jacket that "fits you properly" while biking, except imagine that the jacket fastens all the way up to the chin and is made out of cowhide. it doesn't make much sense.

my perfecto, and a couple carhartt chore coats I own, all have a pleat on the side/back area so you can move your arms more. biker jackets are supposed to fit really snug and are made to move with someone whos riding a bike.

on a related not, I'm actually angry that not more jackets have this kind of pleat. you used to be able to find suit jackets and wool coats with these iirc. it makes a garment objectively better and it looks terrific imo.

action backs are very nice, however they are considered casual hence not that popular even way back in the 10s-50s where a suit was a man's everyday uniform. However with fast fashion and made to order clothes such details have almost disappeared.

I bought a 1960's biker jacket from a vet some years back for squat - 75 USD. It fit wrong, obv. What I did was look up a rare breed of tailor - Leather jacket tailors. They exist. They aren't cheap.
$200 later, I was left with a jacket that fit my torso and arms to the letter - not to mention the 50+ years of wear it had already seen. I prefer it to a fashion designer's iteration of the garment, because it offers range of motion in the shoulders and a perfect fit everywhere else. It's fading nicely, too.

I was in john varvatos last year and saw old, semi rehabbed but ultimately shitty biker jackets selling as 'vintage' (which they were) for upwards of $1500. IMO I made the right choice. It's a roundabout solution to the problem, but I wouldn't choose another option.

>> No.13097010

That is a good idea. There is nothing else like owning a brand new leather jacket though. The fragrance, the feel of the leather. Buying other people's used clothes is romantic, especially if they are "premium" items, like leather and silk etc. But ultimately, you are still just buying someone else's used clothes.

>> No.13097028

>>13097010
It didn't feel used at all, though - it's from a period when construction was of a different caliber, as were materials. It hadn't been worn in years. Still smells and feels like leather and me.
Besides, used clothes are like, not a big deal. Specially if you can't get the item otherwise.

I also kind of like the pre-existing age of it - a leather jacket will outlive YOU, if it's properly made. You can give it to your son when you hit 70. He can do the same. I think leather looks best broken in a bit, sheen worn down, otherwise it's at odds with the subculture that first popularized it in American fashion (rough and tumble bikers). This initial breaking in can take years! As I age, this jacket will age with me.

That's all just my opinion, tho. I def see where you're coming from about the niceties of a fresh new Schott or whatever else you have in mind. I'm just a sucker for garments with history.

I did not expect that. Thank you. I did a LOT of things to this jacket - including zipper replacements and hardware changeups.

That was not the final answer, tho - You remember Boris Badijan Saberi? You remember how he was famous for those treated leather jackets he sold? They had a very nifty texture and strangely distressed leather. I saw it years back and I started looking into how that leather BBS jacket was made, especially the texture and "supple stiffness" of whatever process he was using on his leather.

It turns out he was using a combination of surfactants, centrifugal motion and timed heat. Surfactants are the chemicals that make liquid detergents work. They were invented in the 50's and used exclusively for TIDE detergent.

He also uses tumbling and heat. Sounds like a washing machine! I took a leap and washed the tailored piece 15+ times in hot water loaded with enough tide for 3 washes. Every time I washed it, it got a little better. When I started drying it in the machine instead of by air, the effect got even better. According to my tape, the measurements of the piece didn't change from the ones I took before I began the washing process.

Between the heat, the detergents and the moisture, the jacket just... changed. It put on twenty years without changing color or being damaged. It's now harder (pretty stab proof in a lotta places), has that distressed BBS texture, kinda waxy... Also, the collar now stands up and stays up, as you can see in the pic.

It's just... It's a sorta DIY thing, and you can't ever buy that experience for any amount of money (IME), because the garment is essentially for ME, and it was distressed by me, it was me who went to the tailor 3x a week to watch him deconstruct the jacket and help him re-drape certain parts according to my measurements and the visual effect I wanted the jacket to give off when reassembled.

Glad I took the time.

Well, I appreciate you taking the leap. I'm happy with it either way, but it's nice to hear something you worked on doesn't suck.

I had to leave the shoulders and arm holes a bit wide - I discovered when I first started seriously scoping a leather jacket that slimmer shoulders don't allow for the same range of motion. I musta hit ten stores, and I was ready to drop way too much money on some shit from the cast or acne or SLP, but I just couldn't feel 100% about anything I tried.

A friend with a background in tailoring explained how these jackets' patterns are cut out, and why the patterns and construction would get in my way of making drastic changes to a traditional leather intended for biking.

I needed something I could crawl through a tunnel with, scrape on floor or wall and not worry about. Something with enough toughness to withstand actual riding and offer protection. These stitches have all been reworked with riding and protection in mind. An SLP will turn to dust and leather panels if you hit the pavement with it doing 35. It's all soft, it's not enough armor. It's also restrictive and looks too monied.

There had to be a compromise between form and function. I fit it where I could and tried to work with the shoulders by exaggerating the silhouette of the rest of the jacket. Overall, It's an inverted triangle - a good shape for men, IMO. I had extra fabric when the arms were tapered, so I had the curve of the sleeve exaggerated a bit.

The belt is buckled into itself behind the back and fixed in place with matte black steel brackets that can't really be noticed. It adds something, to have the belt so cleanly folded back onto itself, bracing the lower half of the back panel.

When you wear it open, the draping loop of steel grommets and leather is sorta rickish, in a way. It adds another shape to your silhouette and complements layering.

Sometimes a hybrid can offer the best of both worlds by existing entirely in its own.

pic related is my jacket, my father bought it in the 80s and it has seen some use, he made multiple tours through Europe and wore this jacket on most of them. When he married my mom he stopped riding his bike though and sold it some years ago, he stopped wearing the jacket too and stored it in the attic, were it hung for around 20 years. When we found it, the leather was in a very bad condition and it smelled very badly, plus the interior has a big burned spot at the back, because he hung it over his exhausting pipe at one trip. I had the leather refurbished for approx. 100€ and may dad gave the jacket to me. It's my favorite peaces of clothing and it's really durable, he fell from his bike wearing it, I fell wearing it, when I was skating a couple of times, but the leather is undamaged.

It's funny because I was the original person who complimented jacket, and I was going to pick it apart objectively but I felt bad so I just faked it and threw out a compliment to be positive. Then after the way he received it and blathered 5 blog posts on how awesome he was only then I decided to make my real comment, which was this exact comment that he got all pissed at. Some other anon pretended to be me here>

The shoulder fits fine but the sleeves are a bit too long if you work out and make your shoulders 1 cm longer the sleeves will fit better without making the epaulets look too short for your shoulders.
Long-wise the jacket fits fine but its too long for a SLP look.

Idk why girls almost never have problems with leather jackets despite girls being smaller. Most of them don't have the too long epauletes and sleeves problem also their tits help the jacket look good while open without having one extreme of the jacket touch the other thus filling the gap which should show what you are wearing underneath the jacket.
Male leather jackets should be made smaller because most people look like shit on them and won't be able to fill them properly without being a bodybuilder or a landwhale unless you buy SLP jacket those are made for skinny niggers.

C++ is too much, huh? How about Assembly? I can also do basic engine repair, pick locks, build bikes, wire an apartment or small home, perform distillations & cold water extractions, I can frame a home, sheetrock and joint it. I can install plumbing OR Gentoo. I can change a tire in minutes while you wait for AAA in the rain. You don't dance, I can break. I draw portraits and logos with enough skill to be published, sold in galleries & licensed by a streetwear label... I can fight, I got cash and I'm white, immune to stage fright, from 10 to ten thousand it's all in a night.
Sluts love all the fits you diss, I could probly fuck yo bitch, I cook a decent duck l'orange and write a decent fucking song.

You couldn't fit a fraction of my life on CD-ROM. You're probly under 6 feet and you got a single mom so you were raised to be a bitch made from the moment daddy gone. Last time you got your dick wet we were still in Vietnam but you got the nerve to tell me I ain't got it going on?

FOH, I know they're just opinions but they're wrong.

..........Thanks for the prompt! I enjoyed that. Open your mind a bit, that 'Revenge of the Nerds" narrative don't apply anymore, what with all the people out there who hone talents according to their own need of personal autonomy.

Now, I don't want you to think I'm dismissing you. I'm not - I'm dismissing your attitude. Your opinion I don't have to dismiss - I think about it all more in terms of how your own attempts to demean others are such an incredibly vibrant and obvious reflection of your own lack of confidence.

You aren't insulting me so much as asking me how I manage to live without the unwarranted shame & fear that define your own identity and life choices. There are so many things you'll never get to experience, and it's sad because you KNOW how you're limiting yourself, but you're unable to do otherwise.

It's astonishingly difficult to find women who fit a leather jacket properly. They usually size the midsection of their body, and to hell with the sleeve length or jacket length. For them, it's either fit properly or too short/small. Anything that it slightly too small for them they consider cute...hence.

Really? Well, thanks, man. I think my bullshit tolerance got a little lower. A lot lower. And I don't visit unless I'm 'armed' with basic IP tools.

OFC, been trying to take old criticism to heart, but dick licks who can't seem to grok the fact that Anonymity fosters honesty and openness in some folks, whereas a nickname or pseudonym serves that purpose for other folks.

They all got this wonderful self important 'new sheriff in town' attittude and feel entitled to order me around and post in a manner more to their liking. They dictate the TOS now, they think.

And then, these spoiled children call me egocentric for using a name. The lack of self awareness is just astounding. The way they twist the precepts of anonymity and non interference that guide this place into a means by which to justify trolling or whatever? It's a brilliant bit of self important self deception.

Those kids can go and fuck a sink disposal if they think that THEY or anyone else is gonna tell me how to post.

Oh, yeah, I was the one who got Historian banned. I wrote a letter to moot and made a bet with a friend. I won that bet.

That's how you handle an asshole in your board. One way to, at least.

Stop zipping up your GD leather jackets you cucks.

For fashion:
It should be virtually impossible to zip up. Like a genuine struggle filled fight. Fuck it, if it can’t zip up, you’re still good. And cropped. It should end at the waist band of your pants. Full ass should be exposed.

For riding:
It needs to be comfortable and blah blah blah.

Leather jacket sizing is never consistent across brands.

I recommend sizing down 1-2 depending on the jacket.

Best idea: try it on. Stay away from inexpensive jackets.

A leather jacket should last you a lifetime.

If you didn’t spend a lot of money on it, everyone can tell. It fits shit. It’s too shiny. It’s not shiny enough etc.

Calfskin will fit you better right out of the box, soft but not rugged. Cow will last longer and wear beautifully but definitely not from the start. You have to work at cow to make it yours. Wear it daily. Wear it while you’re jerking off. Wear it while you’re watching tv. Wear it to bed.

Actually action backs and belted backs in general were pretty popular all the way up to the 50s.

They resurfaced in the 1970s. The 1970s action backs are the most common in what you can find in the vintage market. Earlier action backs are a lot rarer since they're over 70+ years old.

Excellent advice. The most important thing to do here is to try the jacket on, and make sure that when yo do so you're wearing what you PLAN to wear when wearing the jacket i.e. the correct jeans or trousers you want to wear at the right height, any sweaters or just a plain t if that's what you want to wear underneath it, etc.

Jacket sizing is all over the place, sometimes within brands. Belstaff is notorious for having sizing problems within (i.e. a medium in one style is not the same as a medium in another). Schott is known for having sleeves that are too long and stomachs that are too generous in off-the-rack jackets. One could go on and on, so try on the jacket and go from there.

In terms of durability, you're looking at Horsehide>Bison>Buffalo>Cow>Goat>Lamb

If you want pliability, style, and choice material, you're looking at
Kangaroo>Lamb>Suede> and all the rest.

If you're looking at the double-rider, the best choice is Horse by far, though it takes years to wear in and they are very expensive. The next down is normally cow or some tougher hide.

>>13106352
I disagree. Cowhide is fine, and it can look awesome on the right style of jacket. It's also tough enough to be used on biker jackets as a protective material, and because of the larger grain, it distresses amazingly well.
