Repeating my question on this new thread. I’m trying to understand why do people dislike/hate the Royal Oak? If you hate it, is it all of the models in the Royal Oak line or is it a specific model? Personally, my all time favourite is the original RO, reference 5402. It’s the thinness of it for me, the vintage Audemars Piguet text, and of course the petite tapisserrie. The hands and indices perfectly matching the thinness of the monobloc case.

>> No.13921641

>>13921629
I don't "hate" Royal Oak but I definitely find them one of the most unimpressive watches, along with the basic Nautilus. Both of them could pass for $30 chinese watches if they didn't have their heritage attached. I know in their case it's a lot more about what's under the hood, but visually they look massively underwhelming, especially when you look at other luxury watches in the same price range.

>> No.13921662

>>13921629
The ref you posted would actually be a handsome watch imo if they took those dumb ass screws out of the bezel, if the crown didn't look like an oversized bolt and the integrated bracelet didn't look quite so 70's. I'm not really a fan of Gente's design language anyways so I don't really like the nautilus either.

7mm thin thanks to the 3,4mm calibre 2121.

>>13921641
I don’t agree with you with it looking like a 30$ watch. I don’t think it’s underwhelming either, it’s a polarising design.

>>13921641
The screws are part of its identity, take it away and you’ll have a Nautilus. The rest of the Royal Oak just look extremely gaudy to me, it’s like having a dinner plate with a hamburger on your wrist. As you can tell, I’m not a fan of thick watches at all.

I don't know if people "hate" it.
It was an extremely seminal design, and it's uncompromisingly a luxury watch, unlike Rolexes for instance that used to be tool watches but are now luxury abominations in many ways.

It's very nicely made too, they use the spinning tin plate polishing method invented by Grand Seiko ("zaratsu"), so they're one of the few Swiss watches that come close to Grand Seiko quality, but with the Swiss prestige.

The way the dial is made (guilloche) is pretty neat too.

However, this was the watch that sparked the whole "luxury mechanical sport watch" thing that still dominates the watch market to this day.
It saved mechanical watches, but also made them objects of snobbery.

So here’s two scenarios:

1: The Swiss invented the lapping machine for literally no reason at all. Some random watchmaking Japs found themselves in Switzerland, saw a Sallaz lapping machine and thought to themselves, „Ah! Ret’s use this to porish our watches.”, bought them and brought them back to Japan.

Or

2: Swiss watchmakers had contracted Gebrüder Sallaz to fabricate lapping machines so they could use it for their watches. Somehow through the watchmaking grapevine, the Japs heard and found out about this machinery being used by Swiss watchmakers, so they bought them to try it out. Fast-forward, now it’s 2018 and they’re using a Japanese-ised German last name „Sallaz" > Zaratsu as a marketing meme.

Which scenario is more likely to have happened?

It's pretty important.

Even if those machines were actually built specifically for finishing watch cases in Switzerland, that still does not mean they were used anyway near like how and for what Grand Seiko started using them.

You seem really upset btw.
You should know that even Philippe Dufour says Japanese finishing gives the Swiss a run for their money.

>they use the spinning tin plate polishing method invented by Grand Seiko ("zaratsu"), so they're one of the few Swiss watches that come close to Grand Seiko quality, but with the Swiss prestige.

>Invented by Grand Seiko

We've established that Zaratsu is just a Japanesised „Sallaz" and Sallaz is Gebrüder Sallaz AG, precision machine fabricators in Grenchen, Switzerland.

Zaratsu is not a Seiko invention, it's just a Jap marketing buzzword for lap polishing. The Japs DID NOT invent lap polishing. You're acting that before the Japs used the lapping machine, the Swiss had no idea what it was nor how to use it.

13923057

My grandfather was given a gold Bulova Acutron by his employer, General Motors, on the 25th anniversary of his employment. That was in 1973. He wore the watch for over 30 years, replacing the battery whenever it stopped keeping time, until one day, 5 years ago, a jeweler broke it... Papa kept the watch in a drawer as a keepsake, despite it not being functional.

My Papa is no longer with me, he passed away in 2016.

Today I picked up his watch from my watchmaker, who happened, out of sheer luck, to be one of the last graduates of the Bulova school of watchmaking. It's like new.

The watch isn't worth much money, a few hundred dollars at best, and it's not especially fashionable. It is a horological oddity, a tuning fork movement, a relic of the past... not a mechanical swiss masterpiece, and it isn't going up in value... but it was His watch... and now here it is, humming away with that faint tuningfork buzz, on my wrist... It is my most cherished possession, and my all-time favorite watch.

Non-transistorized electric watches (like the Hamilton) are a huge pain to keep running, I'd avoid them. Later-generation transistorized electric watches aren't too bad, I've had pretty good luck with them. Cosmotrons are what I'd consider the best place to start, specifically the 7803a. Sweephand's blog is an excellent writeup. Serviceability of these has been pretty painless for me.

The Hungarian watchmakeranon has also posted some service stuff with Seiko Elnix, so they're probably fine too. I've been considering getting a Lip R27, which I've heard good things about. But start with cosmotrons on yahoo jp.
