You don't have to full-on turn into the Crow. Darker dress shirts and functional black boots are not bad for entry-level. Nor do you need to commit. A simple appreciation will do, the rest tends to follow.

I think you are among the lucky ones, to start with the music rather than the look. Larger cities almost always have a community due to goth nightclubs. Too many goths tend to sequester themselves from the outside world.

The best 80s goth descended more from the darkest dregs of glam rock than that new romantic crap, much of which sounds more like poppier Kraftwerk than anything else. Siouxsie covered Sparks in 1987, Sisters of Mercy covered the Rolling Stones in 1983, Bauhaus covered Bowie in 1982..Mission UK covered Aerosmith in 1988 (not glam rock admittedly but glam metal). Even in the 90s, Rozz did covers of both Roxy Music and the Stooges-- "In Every Dream Home a Heartache" was from 1973 and gotta say it but the original feels a lot more goth than anything New Order ever recorded.
