There’s a reason it was one of the best selling fragrances of all time. The people who talk about this being terrible probably don’t have any idea what they’re talking about and wouldn’t recognize it if they smelled it on someone. The stigma seems to just come from the fact that douche bags in the 80s would over spray it and everybody knew someone who wore it. I wouldn’t personally reach for it simply because it has sort of a dated vibe, but dated doesn’t mean bad. Tastes change and things fall out of fashion, but an amazing scent doesn’t magically start smelling like shit after a decade. This is exactly how people will talk about Sauvage 10 years from now, I can virtually guarantee it.

Dior Eau Sauvage or Dior Homme Cologne?

>> No.14273235

>>14273173
Dior Homme Cologne. It's simple but effective.

Dior Eau Sauvage is a masterpiece but its current formulation is tragically weak. 99% of the time "get the vintage" is just to flex, but this is not one of those times.
Also, Eau Sauvage is from the 60's when those aromatic chypre scents were popular. People nowadays will sometimes think they smell old-fashioned, because modern fragrances don't use a lot of oakmoss.

Also, and this is an aside, if you like Eau Sauvage, try O de Lancome. It's listed as a women's fragrance, but it's as unisex as anything.

>> No.14273241

>>14273235
Thanks.

I’ve only tried Eau Sauvage once and I did enjoy it, but I don’t think the drydown was too exciting. I don’t have many fragrances for seriously high heat and I think Cologne might be the one for that.

Have you tried Mugler Cologne?
That's my summer go-to. It smells fresh and clean but definitely doesn't smell like every other cologne style fragrance out there. Pretty decent longevity too, for a cologne.

There's a range of them now, but I'm just talking about the original green-colored one. They didn't change the formula, just the name.

I just got back from town after buying Homme Cologne. Beautiful stuff. I opted for the 125ml. Biggest bottle I own.

I do have Mugler Cologne. 100ml of that too. I love it. It’s my favourite “post shower” fragrance, or if I don’t want what to wear. I get insane performance from it. I sprayed it on at 4pm a few days ago and could still smell it in the morning. It has a bit of a soapy quality which I don’t always want, and Homme Cologne has the citrus without the soapiness. It’s like a big glass of lemonade with the ice clinking against the sides. Wonderfully refreshing.

I bought Tobacco Oud last week and it’s so dry but this is the antithesis.

Yes surprisingly. I just get a mere hit hint of a pleasant, cedary pencil shavings smell when I wear it. But it's strong enough that I've had random people ask what I'm wearing. I've also had a couple of negative instances though where people said it was way too strong, even though I was wearing a small amount. So while most people will find it pleasant and subtle or be totally anosmic to it, there are some people who are really sensitive to Iso E Super.

Try Enigma, and also try Enigma for women. It’s lighter and fresher, but has the same DNA as the men’s version. Smelled it at De Bijenkorf last time I was in Amsterdam. I own Enigma for men and the salesgirl said I should try the women’s. Might work for you if you find the men’s version too heavy.

Arguably one of the best near-mainstream frags on the market. Very versatile, wearable almost all year round, suitable for day or night and has decent longevity and projection. It's a timeless classic which modernises the original AdP Colonia DNA without jumping on any trend rooting it to the present decade.

It has a bright, crisp citrus opening which keeps appearing every now and then when you get a waft of it during the drydown. It's not too linear and isn't too seasonal either. Really the best thing going for it is just how versatile it is.

I’ve tried both, but for me Ginepro is just more unique. Cedro has a bright citrus opening with a woody drydown. I already have fragrances like that. Sure, Ginepro has some cedar in the drydown too, but that Juniper note really holds up and you just don’t smell it as often. I love most things in that entire line but Ginepro is more unique and has decent longevity. Fico Di Amalfi probably lasts the longest in that line, but the added depth makes it less appropriate for high heat in my opinion. It tends to be quite “thick” in the air around you if it gets too hot.

Ginepro is like a nice cool gin and tonic in a very lush green garden. Cedro is like a glass of lemonade on a front porch.

Usually on a constant rotation for several months with a different frag every day. It generally tends to be what I go for most over a given season, although I sometimes throw other random ones from my collection or samples in. I work from a 24hr rota so depends if I'm doing days, evenings or nights what I go for most weeks. It's in part why I pick such a wide rotation so I can easily line-up a whole week suited to the time of day I'm up at.

I wear some more than others like Colonia Essenza, Beau de Jour and GIT which rarely go a week without being used at least once. Other times I just chuck in random ones because I like them, regardless if they fit the time of year like L'Air du Desert Marocain, DHI or Spicebomb Extreme. At the moment it's unusually hot so I'm wearing a few I'd normally only wear in summer like Pacific Rock Moss, AdP Colonia Club and Heeley Sel Marin alongside the less heavy/more versatile ones in this selection.

Heaven knows. They used to have their private line in the 2000's called Baldessarini that produced some beautiful proto-niche designers: Ambré, Strictly Private, Baldessarini EDC, the latter being one of Luca Turin's favourites. I recommend them all despite their present, reformulated state and even vintages are affordable. Too bad they sold Baldessarini to Maurer und Wirtz in 2011, nothing worth mentioning was released since then.

Versatility - OW. No question.

Super cold - TO. If it gets too hot it can become extremely cloying and because it’s a polarising scent subtlety is key. Oud Wood, in my opinion, benefits from a little warmth to help projection. In The cold and wet OW really works well because it has a kind of “damp” smell. It reminds me of church pews.

I adore them both. That said, Oud Wood is one I can wear with confidence and know most people will enjoy. Tobacco Oud is one you have to be more careful with. If I want to wear it out I spray it about an hour before I leave because the opening is very offensive to some (I love it, but don’t want to make people hate me).

Without a doubt, Oud Wood is the safest purchase of the two. You should definitely try and sample both. They’re too expensive not to sample.

Oud Wood is good more formal and informal occasions, indoors and out. If you’re very careful you could even get away with it at work. But be subtle with it.

As for TO, it’s a more formal scent. I wear it down the pub sometimes because it suits the environment, but it’s not really for the bar, it’s not for work, it’s not for anywhere too hot. Maybe if you’re at a family gathering for a meal you could wear it. If you’re like me and live near the countryside the earthiness can suit being outside, but even then, Oud Wood fits the environment better.

I hope that helps. I’m significantly more drunk since you asked so I hope it makes sense as well.

Any more questions just ask.

If you want a brief answer: Buy Oud Wood. TO is one of my favourites, but it’s more for my own benefit than others.

Definitely don't do that if by samples you mean rollerballs or travel sprays. You should expect a rollerball or travel spray for a good quality fragrance to be between $28 and $60. I think quality over quantity is very important for fragrances, so don't skimp out. Each time you make a purchase at Sephora they let you take home up to 3 small fragrance samples for free. Here's what I currently do to shop and recommend to get most bang for buck:
- I look up recommendations beforehand and make a list.
- Each time I go to Sephora or a department store I sniff up to three or so on a card because my sense of smell gets worn out very quickly and after a few I just won't be able to smell anything at all, then I choose one that I want to "try for real" because it will smell different on skin than it does on a card, and spray it on my forearm. Don't spray your wrist because it will come off the next time you wash your hands. I smell it again in an hour to see if I still like it or if it changes. Sometimes it smells better after it has been on skin for a while. Limit to at most one fragrance trial per day. I've been able to come in to the same shop repeatedly and do this without getting weird looks or anything.
- Make a purchase of a safe beginner fragrance (like one that will smell nice to a most people and won't polarize) and take home three samples of fragrances you are also thinking of buying later on. The Sephora sample bottles should be enough to spray on your arm like a dozen times maybe. I'm still a beginner myself so I'm only purchasing rollerballs, no bottles. If I fall in love with one then I'll end up dropping 100 bucks on a full bottle.
- I think Nordstrom might let you take samples without making a purchase because I have seen little empty sample bottles sitting in buckets for anyone to take, but I might be wrong about that.
- Don't buy fragrances for cheap online because there are fakes all over the place that will give you cancer or some shit.
