Is anyone into somewhat prep themed clothing (wool sportscoats) tied in with menswear? These threads are always 100% prep but in reality, they are re-posts of a past age of prep and there are very rarely any actual legit posters who wear it.

Yet the average age on this board is 18 so we never have menswear threads.

I want inspo of black pants and sports coats, that kind of aesthetic.

That's again without even mentioning 99% of these threads the posters don't even dress prep. They post old catalogue photos, movies and so on. I own 15 tweed jackets and I doubt people own 1 here.

No I'm not, I'm saying that it's a weird complaint either way because black does not go into any informal menswear style, whether prep or trad. Lamenting the lack of quality menswear discussion while simultaneously complaining about how nobody wants to discuss your black chino fits is strange, since any "legit" poster anywhere would tell you that they're hard to fit with anything else and not to wear them. It's like critiquing the thread for the lack of fits incorporating hot pink sportcoats and saying that shows the low level of discussion here.

Not my taste, but nothing to cry over like I'm sure people do. There are plenty of black garments that can look good in the TIP canon and otherwise, especially if you have darker skin tones. I'm pale as a ghost though so I avoid it at least partially for that reason. A fitted black polo with a pair of high rise flannels is menswear kino though. Black short sleeve button downs can also work with linen pants for a summer look for tan complexions. There are a lot of options for black that pale and/or young people simply can't pull off. You're alright, Anon.

They're both styles of Western menswear, built around the lounge suit. The British style is more structured and traditionally masculine, and hews closer to the martial roots of the lounge suit. The American style is more unstructured, with a relaxed straight "sack" fit.

If you think these things look the same, it's because you're illiterate in the very deliberate styling language they work in. Which makes sense, and is fine, because outside social contexts where the suit is still a uniform almost nobody dresses like this anymore. Visited the local country clothes shop today, got a few questions. First, what pairs well with widish wale olive corduroy for casual wear, assuming I can find some in a good fit? Second, for the life of me I couldn't find a jacket I'd like to wear there that wasn't specifically a hunting jacket. Looking at Ralph lauren I kinda like their wool thigh length, diamond quilted, and waxed cotton parka coats. Problem is, they're way too expensive for me unless I catch them on a sale while I'm also flush or luck the fuck out in tk maxx. Short of this, anyone got any advice for finding a good autumn through winter coat that actually looks good? Some taper to the waist or a belt would also be nice. I'd go with a waxed cotton jacket but imo they don't pair well with anything other than denim or leather. Also, what should I look for in a good wool coat?

A black or brown (maybe too country looking) coat, perhaps. Olive trousers are not especially versatile.
>anyone got any advice for finding a good autumn through winter coat that actually looks good? Some taper to the waist or a belt would also be nice.
Barbour has plenty of the quilted jackets that meet that description. There's also their renowned waxed cotton jackets, but they're more expensive. But why are you stocking up for Autumn/Winter?

I don't really wear coats in summer, I'm also hoping to hit some sales.

That's a shame, they look really nice. Also yeah, I don't want to look too country. I live in it but I'm not really of it, I just want to dress a little more my age and not like the 19 year old that picked all of my current clothes some 7 years ago. There's also navy cords, but they risk looking too dressy if I don't pair them right. Moleskin and wool look nice, but have similar problems.

Any advice on the wool?

>> No.15004079

>>15004016
I'd go looking through second-hand/vintage stores for wool coats. Construction/materials (no less than 90% wool on the outer) are more important than brand, but you can be assured Burberry ('Burberry's' in older garments) or Aquascatum are probably high quality if you get lucky. Give strong preference to coats made in first world countries.

Slim fit is a crutch that eschews nuances in drape and silhouette for crudely clinging to the body. Its boring and mass produced. so i like a relatively form fitting cut to my trousers. not much, but enough to show off my natural shape to some degree, at least in what ways flatter. to do this, i normally belt my jeans above my hip bone, which i find has the added effect of making my thighs seperated comfortably by fabric, and showing off the shape of my arse. now call this heresy if you will, but im toying with getting a pair of ralph lauren classic preppy cut chinos in preparation for summer. will i look like a total twat if i try wearing them like that? it works with my dark levi 502s, my old tatty bootcut jeans, and my ralph lauren slim fit cords atm. i just dont know if i could comfortably pull this off with that cut in a chino.

Yeah they often wont make those skinny or whatever as not many young people wear them at least not in fast high street fashion.

But the pants and the jacket can be tapered to being them in. It's a very simple alternation. I'm always telling people to learn basic tailoring and get the fit you want with pants. The waists are harder but to bring pants in and taper to slim the material is just taken in like an inch and stitched together. You can even do this without cutting the pants in case you fuck up.

>but it will be loose at the natural waist, where id prefer a jacket to come in a bit.

Let me add more to do this too. When a slim fit jacket does that, it brings in the item all over. the arms, the chest and generally just feels uncomfortable like under the arms. Unlike a classic fit that if it fits your chest right, you can just bring in the sides and taper them.

Although some classic fit do that anyway, what you are talking about is a sack fit that just drops down.

>what you are talking about is a sack fit that just drops down.
effectively yeah, my problem with a lot of mens clothing is that it fits like a sack, and bringing it in a little touch around the joints, at least following the natural shape of the leg/torso does a world of good.

The alteration work is not much, it's at the bottom end of alterations. Look at my artistic picture. The red is how it would be taken in.

Basically the parts are taken in (the longest part) stitched in about 10 seconds, the excess material then cut off inside and then that is stitched again in about 10 seconds to stop it fraying.

If you want to know exactly what I mean, this guy is a good way to see about taking clothes in and how it;s simple and haw much of a big affect it has.
