Tudor redesigns piss me off so much. Why so fucking big, why ruin the beautiful precise script with ugly basic block lettering, why fake aged lume, why ruin the perfect Oyster case and crown, WHY SO FUCKING BIG?

I'm actually quite happy with the prices of Rolex. I was under the impression that any of the models that I liked were just priced far too high to expect to purchase any time soon. But what I realized was that was because I was selecting fully gold/platinum models. I was thinking that the Submarine was over $40k this whole time. But in regular Oystersteel, or even Steel+Gold, it's closer to $10k.

Now, I won't for a second pretend that $10k on something like a watch is not ridiculous. But it's definitely something much more achievable than I originally thought when I saw $40k+ on all these watches.

Man, having solid gold really makes a huge difference in price.

Because the swiss SCUM know, they know exactly what you want, they already had the pefect proportions and perfect cases and dials and design features.
But they want you to get desperate first, to beg them, to suffer. And eventually they will get back to the good designs, once the profits start to dry up, because everybody hates that shit and not even the chinese want it.

Everybody hates the new ranger, there is no reason to make no lug covers, because the old had that, they just fucked with people on purpose.

Vintage leather and period correct straps are a very autistic niche that will never become mainstream, firstly because Hodinkee et al. are interested to sell overpriced contemporary straps to their readers instead of introducing them to this "sub-hobby", and secondly because wearing "luxury" leather is a status thing for normies, and you can't impress the other upper-middle class drones by bragging about wearing a seal/whale/elephant strap, something that would antagonize most people.

>How are you meant to beat the system?
There is the ''by purchasing rolex cellini watches'' it has some truth to it, the scheme is based on dealer-purchase relationship, the buyer want to give money to the dealer, usually most rolex watches gives the dealer less profit, so the dealer will want you to purchase things from the store with a higher profit margin, so precious metal watches like the cellini, or other jewelry goods from the store, that will show the dealer that you are a good boy and will give you some nice money and not just the money from a single watch. As you can see, it's pure bullshit so many people are going to buy grey market rolex that have an higher price than the official price. So there is no ''official list'', you are just a telephone number on the dealer notebook and if some dude does not want to buy a watch, maybe the dealer will phone you, it is said the average time for popular watches is around 1 year-2 year of wait, and some models even more or basically never. so this >>15487959 , people see Omega like a respectable brand behind Rolex and they have no wait list, if they can't sell you the watch on the moment they will tell you when they will be able to do, you want a speedy their most wanted watch, no problem, speedy right off the shelf or in one week at most.

Of all the seikos I've bought, the flightmaster is probably the one I feel the worst about. In the first 5 minutes after acquiring it I realized I'd made a mistake. This watch wasn't a show piece ,it came out in the very early 2000's and probably hasn't ever been serviced. The clasp doesn't even work properly. Someone probably bought it new, wore it for 15 years and sold it (to me) when it started running slow.
I'm entertaining the idea of sending all my automatic seiko chronos and both my 9983-7000 dress watches to japan to be serviced they deserve it. Nobody wants to touch these things where I live.

Seiko doesn't service vintage stuff. If you're lucky they might point you towards an independent specialist.
However, depending on what it is and its relative rarity there just may not be any parts.
I like the 6159-7001 but the price has doubled in the past 5 or so years. And even if I got one, who the fuck can service if there are parts to be replaced?
It's one of those watches where parts are so rare that the only way to get them is from another donor watch that's even more fucked that it such that its only use it to donate components to examples that can be salvaged.

I don't think it's ever been a thing. I remember reading forum threads on wus a decade ago about the troubles of getting vintage GS fixed and how seiko basically says "nope" and just hand out the contact of some Japanese restorer specialists.
Maybe seiko took it and gave it to the actual repairman on his behalf? If he's not in Japan that would make sense. But seiko, like rolex, don't give a shit about their vintage models. Not like say, patek and the like.

Look at this one, looks not more complicated than some of the soviet shitters. And ivan did it with old and fucked machines from the swiss.

That is also true, there are modern quality copies of movements where you already can only see a difference with magnification and see how the finishing is. >Vintage Rolex is a field particularly susceptible to allegations of skulduggery, not just because enormous amounts of money are being thrown around. For one, the watches themselves are intrinsically simple, inexpensively made timepieces. At the time they were produced, what are highly desirable vintage Rolex sports watches and chronographs were generally entry to mid-range timepieces that were the choice of sportsmen, military personnel and the like. Reproducing or modifying something that was uncomplicated to begin with is a correspondingly uncomplicated task. And the second reason is the lack of an officially sanctioned body of knowledge. Rolex itself never comments publicly on its vintage timepieces, leading to talk that it lacks detailed records of what it made. Though Rolex does authenticate its vintage timepieces, there is vigorous debate amongst collectors on how much stock to put in that. Rolex sometimes replaces components in vintage timepieces with similar looking but newly manufactured parts, which adds to the confusion. The result is that the expertise in the vintage Rolex market is largely and closely held by dealers and to a lesser extent, auction houses. This gives rise to a self-evident conflict of interest. And it is illustrative that even vintage watch dealers get into spats between themselves over authenticity.
>It is difficult, perhaps impossible, to establish absolute certainty since Rolex itself, which should be the ultimate arbiter of authenticity, cannot or does not want to do so. Rolex can’t authenticate the very details collectors pursue, like dial variants and bezel types,

>tl:dr, not even Rolex themselves cannot really tell what is authentic or not

My guess is, they did not care about old models and if they start controlling and authenticating parts and tracking them back, they will piss of lots of vintage collectors and endanger their brand. They clamped down on their newer models i think, they are controlling exactly what watchmaker is allowed to get rolex spares and i think they ditched independent watchmakers and only service at rolex now or rolex officially certified service centers.

seiko has a lot of hype and alot of diehard fans, their prices for entry are very good when compared to (((swiss brands))) but due to their cult following they always get away with doing nonsense like limited edition releases with high prices

in contrast, orient does not have the same clout and mass following as seiko to be playing these games, and their prices reflect it. The best orient you can buy are orient stars and they go for ~$500-$700 max. The best seiko goes for like $7000.

Not even worth servicing if that is you can find a watchmaker that finds it worth his while to actually do the job in the first place.

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH SETTING THE TIME BETWEEN 9PM AND 3AM.
This meme misunderstanding needs to die. The original warning is against using date quickset during those hours, when the date change is already/still underway, so you're pushing against the mechanism. Absolutely nothing wrong with changing the time. How else could you manually wind the time over midnight at all?

>>15490502
>pushing against the mechanism
That's the lesser reason. (and it's true: on a Vostok the balance can stop if you turn the time backwards. it usually starts right back up again though.) The greater one is that using the date quick-set function sets the date window to the unchanged position of some other date, so whatever's left of the date transition between 2100 and 0300 may put the date wheel out of whack.

Two remedies: set time outside that interval and then change the date, or turn the date wheel a complete revolution around to unfuck it in case it does get off-wack.

Anyone here gone down the Seagull 1963 rabbit hole? Is it possible to figure out where a 1963 came from if it's not a Tianjin factory original? I don't mind having a Shenzhen "fake" since they share the same movement anyway, but I still want to figure out which ones come from more "legitimate" sources like the ones from HKED. One I can readily buy in my area has a clear caseback without the red star plastered over it, so it's definitely not one from Tianjin.

Watches made in bulk with 50 cents miyoka quartz, shitty mineral glass, shit steel and straps with bad finishing and horrendeous quality that fail after 3 years ?

If you think all watches are made like this, then I can see why people like you tend to buy them.
With $500 you can buy a great mechanical watch with infinitely better materials and build quality that will never fail you.
But eh, that's your money anon.
Also real luxury watches are usually assembled by hand in civilized countries, not by robots operated by insects.

Are there any recommendations for watches that are like the Casio F91W-1 without feeling so cheap? Digital would be a plus for me, but maybe with titanium instead of the cheap plastic/metal used by casio?

I have dress watches/everyday watches, but as my job has changed a bit, I need to have an ultra-light watch with with surplus features (digital is going to beat out any combination of complications here) that is light/comfortable to wear all day. I used to daily wear a citizen H804, but it's a bit uncomfortable to wear all day for my job.
