If by "other Seiko 5s" then yes since older S5s use a shittier movement while the new Sports ones at least have a 4R36 which has hacking, hand winding, and tends to be either more accurate or better regulated. Maybe both.
Honestly though in the $300 range you have your pick of many sweet microbrands that use that same movement but will give you actual sapphire crystals and milled clasps and sheeit.

>> No.15661990

anecdotally yes but on paper they are almost the same movement and 95% swappable between cases.
in terms of other specs there are better marginal choices, watches that also use the nh35a(4r36) but have things like sapphire, titanium etc
in terms of movement a ETA or a high beat miyota 9xxx is better

it depends on how much you like it

I don't think you understood me right. Automatics have this off centered weight in them that rotates as you move your hand, winding up the mainspring.
Theoretically, this'll last forever and it'll keep running until the end of the universe so long as you keep wearing it. In reality? You gotta take it in every so often to fix up whatever might get worn down through all this use.
And how often is that and how much does it cost? Dunno lol, I'm too broke to own a Rolex.

It has flavour which you might not like. (or might. but, it could be an acquired taste.) Look at the competition also, so you don't get burned.

For example, a lot of "trekking computer" type watches don't do breadcrumb navigation, so there's no standard user interface for that (besides touchscreen wanking). And given where it's from, it may end up being a right christmas tree in terms of features, of which you'd use 2% and the rest becomes a UI maze where you end up lost in half the time. IIUC some of the Suunto engineers used to work for Nokia back in the feature-phone days.

what's there to understand?
look at seiko, they still make great watches that I think are still reasonably priced although they're really fucking pushing it. but they're coasting on name because seiko is an old, established brand with recognition and following. so now the price of the watch is upshifted but they are not offering more value. the 6R movements are not wholly new, and are plagued with issues, yet this is what they choose to offer for the midrange market. you still get hardlex, you still don't get a milled clasp.
meanwhile chinkshit brands are able to offer a genuine seiko, eta, or sellita movement, with cases just as well machined, real sapphire, milled clasps, etc. for half the price. same for your microbrand of choice. why? because they cannot coast on reputation built up in the past, they need to prove to you that they are worth your dollar, so they must excel otherwise you would just go with the tried-and-true brand you know.

>Your budget
Flexible. Cheaper is better, but I'd like to know if there's some wild thing out there that's exactly what I want for an unattainable amount.

>Watch type, e.g. dress, diver, pilot
Looking for something dressy, but it also being clearly readable and rugged without looking like a tool watch would be nice.

>Movement, e.g. automatic, hand wound, quartz
Ideally automatic, but very flexible.

>Desired features, e.g. water resistance, day/date, 2nd time zone
Here's the thing: a true, not doubled layered, 24 hour dial. Ideally with separate minute and second hands, not one of those gimmicky single hand ones.

Again, ruggedness is nice. Something elegant and clearly dressy, a little offbeat and/or flashy without being gaudy, but still functional would be ideal.

I know about Raketas, I have one, but I'd like something a little prettier and jewelry-y (but probably without actual jewels on the face). Something like a Cartier Tank (or Ronde) Solo, but with arabic numerals (ideally) in a true 24 hour setup and a second hand. If I were getting a custom dream... with a dark charcoal grey titanium case and a dial the color of the hands in the picture, with silver hands and the seconds labeled on the inside like the 24 hours on the Ronde.

>Preferred strap option, e.g. leather, nylon, bracelet
Leather probably.

>Wrist size or desired watch size
Like ~30mm, 38mm absolute tops. Small wrist.

TL;DR small true 24 hour dress watch, options?

Citizen tries harder with their quartz offerings than anybody else in the watch game. Their Eco-Drive is a very efficient and reliable solar quartz movement. And they are a brand with heritage too. Citizen is an old company, it was created to bring great watches to the people. It's not just some shitter brand.
The Promaster Diver is amazing. 60 click bezel that works well. The dial on the blue one is great and the hands really pop. The weight is good too, substantial but not heavy. It has a very cool look, different from generic divers but not too over the top. The blue lume is a nice touch too, rarely seen at that price point. The only flaw is that the bezel design is a little too rounded, it would have been better if it were fully toothed or scalloped, but you can still easily turn it.
You can get aftermarket bracelets for it for probably around 30AUD that work great. Like Super Engineers or shark mesh if you want an alternative to the typical oyster bracelet that fit the watch well.
I got one for my dad when the watch was on sale for $120 and he is over the moon about it even though he owns much more expensive watches.

>Yesterday, Putin stunned workers at a factory in the town of Tula when he gave away his latest timepiece to a worker.

Dressed in blue overalls, factory employee Viktor Zagaevsky approached Russia's tsar-like leader and asked him whether he might like to offer a memento. Apparently unable to think of an appropriate souvenir, Russia's premier swiftly took off his £5,500 black Blancpain watch and handed it over to a gobsmacked Zagaevsky.

get a simple vostok without a date. they are made to be handwound if that is the specific action that you want to do a lot.
and you can regulate them to be accurate, and its easy.
im sure the glycine would be 100% fine though.
glycines are a very good deal for a ETA tier movement, their prices are crazy for a big brand. Its even cheaper than what most AE brands are willing to go.

dont think so much f.a.m.

>>15663961
it wont hurt the watch, dont be afraid of such things. If you dont like the grease then just wash it off the bracelet. Use a tiny drop and then ease it into the joint.
silicone grease is 100% used for casebacks and Orings anyway. For things like bezels many people use oil/silicone grease to make them turn better. I used baby oil for my bezel.
>>15663974
yes they are self and manual. Aka auto and handwind.

go look on meranom, not ebay.
meranom gives the best prices. Checkout in russian rubles instead of USD to save even more.
ebay is more expensive, only when you want certain models that arent in stock on meranom.

This is a good argument which extends to other products also. I have two German cameras, a Leica and a pre-unification Agfa. The latter has no exposed screw-heads aside from a weird two-hole spanner head on the bottom which is hard to recognize as a screwhead; even in the film bay there are no screw heads. The Leica also has no exposed screwheads accessible to the ordinary user.

Compare to Japanese cameras, which do have exposed screwheads. Even the really good ones, pro models from Nikon and Canon. Even the film era ones. Japan kind of didn't care about that sort of thing, and apparently still doesn't. For good reason too, because the user doesn't care; the jerries only do this to please themselves.
