Honestly, I respect JLC making relatively affordable steel models, but the external finishing on their entry level MUT line models is unacceptably soft. They need to fix that. It's not the 90s anymore, hell, even Omega's have decent external finishing these days (unlike 10 years ago).

Based Meihualu anon if you're still here. I haven't been checking these threads but finally thought to do an archive search. Glad you got your watch safely. Looking again your case is actually different than the ugly one mine came with and it looks not too bad. This pic is after I swapped it into the same case as the WUS example. The caseback should open with a regular caseback wrench around the polygonal edges, although the ball might work too. Movement isn't really worth servicing if it works fine, or buy some other cheap tongji movements/watches to swap over. I don't know that the age of collecting VCMs is over because you never hear about them, especially given the demanding process as you mention, so they'll probably continue to slowly be listed, meanwhile my other expertise in Soviets is a fucking expensive competitive mess these days.

At least VC doesn't "toss out its integrity" to make gaudy oversized diamond-encrusted trash for all cash rapper buyers.
These Chinese zodiac editions are limited and boutique-only. If nothing else, the Chinese zodiac is a nice platform to show off the skill of the in-house sculptors.

a simple rugged 3 handed watch meant to be worn in the outdoors/battlefield, with big, easy to read arabic numerals. 24 hr military markings are usually present as well, along with some lume (but usually not as strong as divers'). Anyone know how difficult it is to regulate tuning fork movements? This is running 10 seconds/day fast and I’d like it to be more accurate if it’s easy.

yes im still here. Since then Ive noticed some differences in the dial of mine vs yours and others. In mine the plum blossoms stop short of the indices, but in yours and others they extend all the way to the edges. Im not sure if this is a later print or a variant, it doesnt look like a new redial unlike the shanghai peacock ones (hopefully). The exact placement of the embossing and logo is the same and there is some age on the dial. Not sure if you have any idea about why its like that.
The case i got is almost like new but with some very minor scuffs. Im okay/happy with it.
For the movement I had succeeded in opening it with a 3 prong opener, it is a standard tongji. It is visually very clean but i think it needs some lube/cleaning, the movement does not start up immediately upon winding, but takes a few winds and a ~30 sec delay. Yea it would be more economically sound to just replace the movement but idk, i might service it if able. And yes its very painful to wind and im still waiting for the winder.

Probably the Overseas.
Best of all worlds.

- It has nice hand finishing (Geneva Seal) kinda like independents, but it's one of the holy trinity so it has tons of historical heritage that independents don't have.

- It's also a Genta-esque watch so it'll suit my thicc arms, but it's not an RO so it flies under the radar with the nouveau riche plebs (and it doesn't look quite as gaudy as an RO among non-rich normies).

- And on top of that, it comes with three quick-change straps (bracelet, leather, rubber) so it suits any occasion.

Not him but a flieger is one of the few watches it's okay to be oversized on your wrist. Given the original designs were over 50mm to fit over flight jackets and be highly visible, a 42mm flieger that is a little too large for a wristlet still comes off okay, it's part of the aesthetic. That's why a lot of fliegers and aviation watches in general run in the 44-46mm range even in the present day.

All the case edges and the edges of the indices show obvious signs of being rounded over by being polished with a high speed buffing wheel, all the polished surfaces on the case also have the obvious surface rounding that comes from that type of polishing. When people talk about vintage watches being polished they way they refer to it as "lozenging".

It makes the cases and indices on JLC's entry level models look a bit cheap and meh compared to the quality of their movements and designs. Today most well made watches in the $5k plus range are using lapidary type polishing which creates much less rounding over of polished surfaces and cases, but it slower and more labour and skill intensive.

I think JLC themselves realize this, as the newly updated Master Control line is noticeably improved in this area compared to older Master Control models, so I assume they will eventually do the same to the MUT line.

If you have a flieger craving you just can't shake and do not need something extremely high quality, at $99 it's a no-brainer in my book. Cheap enough that it won't put a major dent in any savings you have been accumulating for your GS grail. SBGX261 is a fantastic looking watch, I settled on it's lesser SARX brother.

Yeah, as a flieger it pretty much ticks all of the boxes (except for being automatic but that's being picky), and I'm getting major FOMO vibes with it because it seems to be getting popular which can only mean a price increase or it being sold out.
Yeah, I love the SARX line but they were always a little too big for my puny wrists. I've got a SARB but I'll be selling it to partly pay for the SBGX261.

Your watch may be newer because the embossing seems like an improvement. You can always give the watch a gentle but firm flick through the air to get the balance wheel moving from the forces.

I am after some various rare Soviet models but most recently I've seen two 17j Sturmanskies go for $1500 and $1200 which used to be in the several hundred range at most. Pic related my 15j.

That's my only complaint about the SARX. As a wristlet the 40mm is too large for a dress watch but I like it so much I'm making an exception. Still tucks under a cuff well and does not look comically large at least. At 36-38mm it would have perfect.

There are at least a few:

Damasko DC80
Breitling's B01 models are often ugly, but the B01 movement is excellent.
The new moonwatch is overpriced, but at least it's a free sprung balance in a sub $6k chronograph.
Hell, you can probably get a Zenith El Primero 38mm for under $6k with a dealer discount.

With the meme of having skelotonized watches, Mille still are pretty damn cool and surprisingly legible.

What are some other watches that do the skelotonized look right?

Is the casio g-shock GMW5000B /fa/ or a shitter? It's the first ever all metal one (potentially collectable value) and looks dope but $500 is a lot to ask for a digital.

i have one and i love it. it's clearly made using CNC, so the lines on the case are a lot sharper than the molded plastic square g-shocks. something to keep in mind is that the lug-to-lug length is a little longer than a normal square g-shock, so if the plastic ones barely fit you then the GMWB5000 might be too big. but yeah definitely get the stainless steel one unless you want to really commit to a gaudy yellow gold look.

Is the complaining about the 7S26 power reserve a new meme? It's suddenly around constantly in recent threads, and I have a hard time believing people have noticed it now, and not during the 20+ years the movement was actually in production.
My SNK807 runs a good 40 hours after wearing it for a few days. If yours doesn't, you apparently don't move your hand much or your auto winding has problems. I've knocked mine on something a few times so that the rotor starts rubbing against the caseback, and of course it won't wind then but it's easy to fix.
The mainspring and gear train of the 7S is the same as 4R as far as I know, yet people claim the 7S has a poor power reserve but 4R does not. Doesn't make sense unless it's a winding problem.

Not him, it's been discussed for a long time, I also suspect it's usually winding related. Maybe the accuracy goes to shit a little faster IDK.
