I knew a guy like this. Dropped him as a friend so quick. It's the worst kind of person—perpetually focused on the working of their own mind, making themselves into an obnoxious mix of self-hatred and narcissism. Because they spend more time obsessing over their own thoughts and feelings, they begin to lose entirely their grasp on how normal people experience meaning in simple exchanges; and, convinced there is no better way of existing, they begin to 'see through' (or, I would say, not see at all) the unselfconscious life.

>tfw laughing at the absurdity of situations others still see meaning in

The laugh, finally, must be on themselves. For when you have emptied the world of that meaning, when you can see nothing of value in life as you and others live it, when you have lost even the will to be honest with other people, one cannot rightly say that you are seeing life correctly. Rather, you have hollowed yourself out, and stopped your ears, and closed your eyes. Interpretation becomes a process of reduction; of people into types, of gestures into actions, of manifold and ironically conflicting intentions into simple and vulgar desires. Life becomes as small, and as meaningless, as you intend to see it.

I don't know how to offer the alternative in secular terms. For me, it was a change from nihilism into Christianity. The change cannot be argued because reading Christianity profitably requires the very impulse which Christianity helps to nurture: that intellectual effort toward a generous multiconsciousness; the desire to understand things not as simple things, but as complex and connected things. It is in this imaginative mode alone that man can live.

“A man's life of any worth is a continual allegory — and very few eyes can see the mystery of life — a life like the Scriptures, figurative. . .” So said Keats, and he was right.

If anyone identifies with that image, they need to change, or they will learn so much of misery.

But Mersault was happy. He really loved these earthly things, just like Sisyphus. "The struggle itself towards the heights is enough to fill a man's heart, one must imagine Sisyphus happy".

There are many solutions to the characters recognization of the absurd that don't require a devotion to a religion, not that I'm condemning you for it.

I don't think Camus has quite as much of value to say about man as the biblical canon does (indeed, far less). Nor do I agree that the solutions are so multiple as you say. My life has not told me that anything like a Meursault can be happy (or that, inasmuch as he is happy, it is not because he is like Meursault); you say he can; I'll leave him to it, then. I only know that, for me, existentialism was useless, a 'spem fronte serenat' over a troubled nihilism, and utterly unlike the real sublime joy of religion.

Personally, I find the idea that life is meaningless to be a liberating concept versus your life being restricted and controlled by a god.
Christians tend to look forward to death, where-as I see the journey to it to be the important part. I'd rather have my fun now than piss away my allotted sand in the hopes that there is indeed something after-wards.
I don't live my life thinking there is no objective morality, which although perhaps true, isn't practical in the real-world, and I don't like making others feel bad so I avoid wronging people. In a sense, I already live as a Christian, just without firm religious beliefs.
If there really is a God/gods, I strongly assume they'd judge me based on my deeds, and not on my faith.

So you either misread and incorrectly replied no or Christians don't honestly believe in what they say they believe in. If one believes that this life is essentially shit compared to what awaits in heaven, then with all reason they should look forward to dying.

If your lunch is garbage and your dinner is a five star meal you're going to prefer the dinner to the lunch. Christianity counters the option for suicide by declaring it a sin (which actually was decided much later on in the existence of the church, but most of the faith is made up anyway so whatever). I'm not saying christians should kill themselves, I am saying that a person who is honest to themselves about being a christian and believing in the faith DOES earnestly await death. It's why some say Christianity is a death cult.

>Christians tend to look forward to death
Not true.

>I'd rather have my fun now than piss away my allotted sand in the hopes that there is indeed something after-wards.
You're missing the point. It's not about future reward, it's about the joy of having in view the infinite and good; Christianity holds itself the best way of living here on earth, which would still be true without a heaven—indeed, Judaism had no promise of heaven.

It is harder than you think to actually believe in heaven, partly because we can have no idea what it would be like, and partly because any serious Christian does not believe himself worthy of it. But for the most part it's hard to really believe in because we know it only through Scripture and faith, and we're still human. It's hard not to be skeptical. Belief in a heaven is an active, willed kind of belief; unlike how we passively believe in, for example, physical phenomena around us.

>If there really is a God/gods, I strongly assume they'd judge me based on my deeds, and not on my faith.
This is not as Christian as you think. The atheist assumes he lives 'good enough' and God will be fair to him; the Christian sees himself a sinner and asks the forgiveness he does not deserve.

Inasmuch as you say God will judge you on your deeds—I am no theologian, but I assume the same. If we restrict faith only to the sense of 'identifying as a member of a religion', it becomes a near-meaningless virtue. But you put your faith in much—in truth, in goodness, etc. That you divorce these things from religion is a sad mistake, and certainly it is not a whole faith, but this is a kind of faith in an aspect of God, I think. Thus I imagine that God will judge you better than a man who calls himself Christian only so that he may claim the authority of that society—for he takes God's name in vain. Yet these speculations of mine are worth so little, and the judgment lies with God alone.

>If one believes that this life is essentially shit compared to what awaits in heaven, then with all reason they should look forward to dying.

This is shamelessly reductive. Has it ever occurred to you that Christianity may be complex and mysterious, that believers may not believe perfectly, and that reading works of theology or Scripture might help you better understand what it is that Christians believe?

The Kingdom of Heaven is probably not nearly what you imagine it to be. None of us have any good idea of what it's like. The Bible only seems simple to grasp when you do not read it and instead accept everything that is said about it.

God put man on earth not only so that he might forsake it. Understanding why he did is not easy, and it may take a Christian's whole life to acquire only a dim sense of it. If you cannot accept that as an answer, you have no taste for Christianity. Jesus spake in parables. Christianity is the great mystery. To believe in it is to have known that every step toward understanding that mystery was a great step forward in your own consciousness.

I am more than open to the possibility of God and Heaven, I just haven't seen the evidence yet to push me over to it. Frankly, I've been pushed away from it from some experiences I've had, but maybe one day I might.

No, in my "so-called" nihilistic days I believed that life has no objective purpose, that human life is, in the cosmic scheme, an accident, and that morality is what we make it. I believed that no gods exist, or that if they exist, we cannot possibly know they do. I was an atheist as my father had been an atheist, and I accepted without question most of the reductive nonsense people say about Christianity—I thought it a wholly negative influence on the world, a silly belief in a boring and contradictory old book which only serves to protect man against the absurdity of life at the expense of his own reason. I thought religion was an unnecessary bound imposed on man's imagination, that morality would flourish without it, that it was fundamentally an insult to the dignity of mankind.

I believed all these things quite sincerely and I thought about them a lot. I have since changed my mind.
