I was talking to my Canadian friend and he said that wearing suit jackets with jeans is commonplace and socially acceptable in Canada.

Is this socially acceptable where you are? Would you wear it? How often do you see such dress?

Nah it was in reference to former Canadian PM Steven Harper wearing this stuff in a lot of formal photo shoots. I thought it was very strange and the media here would, rightly, mock him for it if he ever dared wear such awful attire.

So I am alone in thinking this actually looks really good? It's just formal enough to look nice but just casual enough to not make you seem like a try hard.

I notice that a Blazer and tie gets me a lot more second looks from women than a shirt alone or a more casual jacket.

They both look like sport coats to me, tbqh. Tweed or herringbone on right, corduroy or moleskin/microfibre/velveteen on the left. In the 'Murikun south, it's mostly seasonal. Folks dress down in the summertime. Jackets kick in during the fall. Common college campus look.

Most definitely. But you need to keep the jacket casual. Thus don't go for a navy blazer or a suit jacket (unless the suit is a casual suit), it will look horrible due to the difference in formality. Rather go for something with patch pockets and a more casual fabric. I also suggest only wearing jeans with little or no wash in a dark color with the jacket.
