Academic fencing. A very old tradition at German universities (mostly). Basically two guys stand in front of each other with sharp swords and only their faces exposed and they have to hit (cut) the other guys face. It's essentially turn based and you can't move and have to stand still.

In the past there was a second type of academic fencing where you stabbed each other instead of slashing but this was discontinued since participants died too often.

It's German academic fencing, or Mensur. The bottom two are from the 19th cent., and the top is the 30s, I believe. Basically students (mostly upper class) would form these "secret fraternities" where they would wear those masks and basically try to cut the shit out of each other with rapiers. The whole point was to get some dank scars to show a) your status, and b) that you ain't a little bitch. That's why many of head nazis had gnarly scars on their faces (other reasons too, obviously)

It had been outlawed sometime in early 1900s but then the nazis reintroduced it in the 30s. Fairly certain it has been banned ever since then.

also, its not to show your status and the fraternities were never secret. They were open for every male student and the older ones supported the young if they couldnt afford to go to university themselves.

No problem. I should have added that it exists in countries with "cultural ties" to or "cultural influence" from Germany as well althought it's nowhere nearly as common as in Germany.

Which are those countries you ask? Austria and Switzerland of course, Poland, the Baltics, Japan etc.

it looks different in real life. Its not that glamorous and actually kinda stupid. The scars dont always heal well and look really shitty most of the times. You often get hit on your head so you sometimes lose your hair and at times even a part of your scalp which is fucked because the hair wont grow back.

I had a mole removed on my lip right where the dude with the mole from Austin Powers had one, It'sa small scar, looks a little raw when I'm clean shaved, but with stubble it cuts through my beard .

It's narrow, straight, only an inch long and healed nicely as it's an odd place so a cosmetic surgeon had to remove it rather htna a dermatologist, lest he leave me with a big pink blotch on my face.

I have had people say I look cooler and I think it looks pretty masucline and imposing.

Im more happy about getting the scar than I am about my ugly mole being removed.
