Reposting mine and my gf's project watch that we completed recently. Donor was a Tissot Seastar PR516 that was beat to shit and not running. Decided to give it a good polish, a custom handset, and a handpainted dial courtesy of the gf.

Still have all of the original parts I removed should I ever want to convert it back, but I doubt I ever will.

Thanks for the compliment though Anon.

It entirely depends on what you're looking for. If you want tasteful design and expect nicely finished movements for the amount you're paying then yes, a Rolex would be overpriced for you. If you want a somewhat gaudy sports watch with a accurate and reliable movement then they are fantastic. Trying to look at it as objectively as possible though I'm not sure if you can call a Rolex overpriced as you can instantly flip it for virtually the amount you bought it for, making them technically very cheap

Working on a 2002 Tissot with an ETA-2846, a sort of obscure modern ETA movement. Since it's 21600bph I thought at first that its either from some left-over production line of some old caliber, or some downgrade.

Turns out by lowering the beat rate, which would require a weaker, i.e. thinner mainspring, they could put a longer one in a standard 28800bph barrel, meaning this movement has a running time of 48 hours.

Also for some reason the day-date mechanism is completely different from any other ETA I saw before.

Did you miss the part where I mentioned that it was beat to shit and not running? Best case scenario, it was going to be stripped for parts anyway. PR516's are insanely uneconomical to pay for servicing costs + I paid like £1.30 for it. It's hardly like it's irreversible if I ever wanted to convert it back anyway. I still have the original dial, handset, etc. I used part-bin parts to build this you turboautist. Nothing of any value was lost to make it. If anything, it's made something out of nothing.

One thing you could do, which no-one has done (and for good reason) would be to build an integrated circuit controlled LCD watch (like any $10 quartz digital), but where the timing signal doesn't come from a quartz oscillator, but from an optical sensor pointed at a balance wheel regulated by a hairspring and powered by a mainspring. That is it, seiko is misaligned chapter rings, "workhorse" movements (never what they should be at various price ranges) , and hardlex instead of sapphire (yeah it shatters more easily than mineral, but seikos arent gshocks). I dont get how people justify getting a seiko 5, or a samurai, or a presage. so I've been going to this local coffee shop about a year-and-a-half now and I befriended one of the owners of a jewelry store in the vicinity of set coffee shop and we happen to sit down and talk every Sunday or so and actually decided to pay him a visit one day and why was there the watches in a store that caught me I caught my eye was actually a Franck Muller timepiece and I told him how much I really like that watch not knowing what it was of course if you told me that if I really wanted it he did give me a pretty significant discount off of it and after further investigation I found out that it was one of his crazy hours watches, my birthday is coming up pretty soon and I was thinking maybe I should treat myself what do you guys think you think I should get it?

How many seconds does it lose a year? If it's advertised as more than 10, I wouldn't ever buy any Quartz watch.. Their whole charm is that you get a decent inexpensive timepiece, or an EXTREMELY accurate timepiece that's still relatively inexpensive compared to 'luxury' mechanical watches... I'm guessing TAG combines the worst of those two worlds, and attaches a priceTAG that's best for them.

From their website:

>TAG Heuer quartz movement, one of the most reliable and accurate made in Switzerland

They seem to claim it's in house, but all I can find about the movements is that they're supposedly ETA 955.412/ 955.414 movements. Meaning off the shelf stuff for industry. They then go on to claim this:

>Almost perfect precision (a variation of only a few seconds per month.)

That's pretty pathetic at $900,- imo. At least mechanicals have an excuse.. My €100,- Citizen chrono does a couple of seconds a month, who cares. But at nine hunnerd??
