There was a massive cultural backlash against the 80's wave of preppy and yuppie looks. Kids were sick of being sold on tighty whitey tennis-like outfits, over trimmed suits, and things trying too hard to look like casual office wear. They wanted clothes they can go out and do things in.

Nothing went wrong. The style switch was for the better. Baggy clothes are trash tier. They work when people actually tailor their clothes and understand silhouettes and have more clothing items to work with other than shitty t-shirts and jeans.

The baggy clothes era was toxic.

I don't remember that being the reason for the style change. It's just that out art and media changed during the 80s and 90s. We had gangster rap, skate culture, and grunge coming up off of glam and punk rock and early hiphop, which made a quick transition from 70s inspired clothes into everyone dressing like a nyc coke dealer.

>> No.13834940

People were most often explicity anti-fashion actually, wanting to impress people you didn't even know was gay and lame as fuck. Yes, and no, there were a lot of midwest, latchkey kids, goths, and others that just weren't getting their fill from fashion of the time or wanted wear that was functional.

As >>13834917 implied, fashion also followed music of the time. People were tired of metal, boy bands, and corporate synth. Alternative only gained traction because boy bands like New Kids on the Block kept wrecking their shit by stealing some other groups moves or sound and getting sued. Then again, alt quickly grew stale since the angsty teens driving it weren't that creative. It was a cultural counterpoint; then the disney whores and nsync bulldozed them off the radio.

>did the cool highschool girls really used to go to school in heels and carry purses/handbags and stuff?

There were a few girls in my school that would carry the big handbags, wear high heels and big sunglasses to school. The funny thing is we had to wear uniforms(khaki pants, blue polo shirt) that didn't stop students from being flashy with their clothes and accessories. Then we'd have the odd day of respite where we didn't have to wear uniform or if it was spirit week and you could dress up according to that days theme( pajama day, twin day, opposite or mismatched day) During those days some of the girls would go all out. I'm talking fishnets, stiletto heels and thong underwear. The guys would turn up too obviously less flashy plus it was the first decade post millennium.

Anyway I grew up and went to school in a city so I'm sure a more suburban or rural school might not see the same type of outfits.

Nah alternative music died in popularity because it pretty quickly became the thing it had originally tried to rebel against. The genre got too commercial and too concerned with selling music and being on the radio.
Listen to Rusty Cage vs anything soundgarden made in the late 90s and it's pretty clear. The only grunge/alternative band that was untouched by this was Nirvana because kurt cobain died before the scene imploded

90s europe was in love with rave music and raver fashion, or grunge music and grunge fashion. look up what that looks like to get a good view of what EU people looked like in the 90s

bear in mind that in the 90s the EU was behind the US in terms of cultural trends by 2-5 years on almost all fronts where the EU tends to follow US today, this was pre internet times and most syndicated tv here was playing shit that was years old by american standards but calling it new

that said in some ways the EU, UK especially pioneered some cultural trends
