Ball makes a ton of models in the same case and they do have some date only versions, but not this specific model with the COSC cert and the machined dial etc. I was indeed able to try it on, but it was in Tokyo, where you can find just about any watch imaginable. Seeing it in person was what sold it to me, I was in the market for a watch with around a 2k budget and hadn't even considered a Ball until I stumbled across this thing.

Yeah, it's quite dim compared to normal lume. You basically can't see it at all until it's dark enough that you can't read the watch without it, even in a relatively dimly lit room you'd think the tubes were just applied markers or something if you didn't know they were there. Once it does get dark enough, though, they look pretty spectacular.

Issue watches still exist but they're extremely rare, at least in the US military. Units have a limited annual budget and in most cases they'd have to sacrifice more critical stuff to pay for watches if they wanted to issue them. The only cases I've heard of in recent years where somebody actually got issued a watch were rare ones where a unit somehow ended up with a budget surplus at the end of the year and had to spend it on something.

In those rare cases the watches tend to be either Marathon CSAR/TSAR/etc. or various Suunto models, all of which have NSN numbers that aren't that hard to find.

They don't exist in the US military at all as far as I'm aware. The only exception I can think of would be special operations units that do HALO/HAHO kinds of jumps and maybe fighter pilots who would require special kinds of watches.
But conventional units don't at all.

Movement quality has always been, and continues to be questionable (even with the move in-house)

Level of finishing and quality of materials is lower-end (e.g., look at a lot of their dials - instead of hand-applied PM markers, they're basically just carved into the dial)

>they're selling at a price point that's out of touch with the quality that's being offered

that's what they get when they get too big for their britches and think they're the next Rolex. I've never handled a Panerai myself, but I've owned watches at similar or lesser price points. Every time I do a mental comparison I can't think of anything positive about them compared to their "peers." I wouldn't be opposed to getting a <$500 or less Panerai Clone with an ETA however.

Sadly it seems Rolex is doomed to make the same mistakes Panerai made and attempt to move upmarket to a niche occupied by the PP Aquanaut, SS or PM pieces that are extremely pricey and hard to get. As much as I love Rolex, they're going to get absolutely assholed when this bubble bursts.

>> No.14370278

>> No.14370299

>>14370278
just me talking out of my ass, plus a hefty dose of anecdotal evidence. To me the biggest sign of an upmarket shift is the increase in PM and scarcity of SS models. SS is probably the largest market segment Rolex has, but look at this years Basel; off the top of my head every new sports model unveiled was a PM variant save for perhaps two. Pepsi GMT with meteorite dial, two tone gold/SS Seadweller, WG Yachtmaster for $20K on a rubber strap. Have you tried buying an SS model recently? The AD nearest to me lost their license (I had been going there for years) and a new one opened two doors down. I go and meet the manager of the new AD to try and strike up some rapport and bag a Pepsi or Sub Date and I'm told that if I haven't bought there before I'd have to buy a few Datejusts/OP's or an Explorer before I would be even be considered to be offered a normal SS sports model.

"That's how it works."

In 2015 I strolled into the old AD, tried on several SS pieces and got a 5% discount when I bought a black dial Exp II. Today it seems unless you're really hemorrhaging money then a Rolex AD attendant wouldn't even want to breath the same air as you.

Fair, but I'd say the SS rarity is a whole different issue - most are priced <$10K which is generally pretty accessible for most decently paid professionals, and we're also at multi-year strength in the US economy and stock market.

I spend a lot of time with my AD and every other day someone runs in trying to buy a hot SS model (usually a Pepsi or Sub) as their first watch. The waiting lists at this point are at best multi-year and at worst closed to new customers, so its fair that they prioritize a "known quantity" of someone that they have a relationship with

It truly disgusts me as well. Sadly, they're making profit hand over fist and smiling all the way to the bank. What's the alternative? I've considered grey for a brief moment but I refuse to pay over retail for a watch, never have done in my life. I've just decided that buying a new watch from an AD in today's environment isn't a premium, luxury experience I'd want for the price I'm paying so I'm in a holding pattern. Until things cool down I'm going to amass a decent vintage collection, who knows I may even stay in that realm for good. The new Rolex sports models are so chunky and gaudy that if they didn't have almost flawless internals and engineering I'd be completely put off.

>>14370304
>The waiting lists at this point are at best multi-year and at worst closed to new customers, so its fair that they prioritize a "known quantity" of someone that they have a relationship with

fair to whom? I've never experienced it myself obviously but there are numerous stories on all the usual forums of people walking into an AD and walking out with a hard to get piece. Sure probably more the exception than the norm, but I'm sure nothing prohibits the same AD you're chatting with from going into the back and selling you something on a whim. I guess what I'm getting at is waitlists probably don't exist, and it's probably more how much you spend there than how long you've waited anyway. Lastly, what's wrong with someone wanting a hot SS model for their first watch that's sitting in a safe in the next room anyway? As a first time customer I'd be more inclined to return to that AD for any future purposes. As it stands now, the standard AD experience is doing nothing but put me off entirely.

Let’s put some things into scale here, an idependent like F.P. Journe produces 800 watches a year. Patek Philippe does 60k watches a year. And Rolex? Rolex churns our 1 million watches a year.

How much more do you guys want Rolex to increase their production? 2 million? 3? 5? That’s just going to dilute their brand. Blame the conniving resellers and the ADs. Rolex doesn’t profit at all from when the watches are resold.

Most of the time the AD doesn't actually have the watch sitting in-stock for the hot models, they arrive one morning and are sold to the first-in-line waiting list customer that afternoon, they rarely sit on display.

I totally agree "waitlists" are more a function of spend vs. numerical order, but it makes sense why they prioritize a regular customer. 1) try to minimize flippers and 2) ensure continued business from the known customer (vs. betting on maybe getting future business from a first-timer)

Nothing wrong with wanting an SS as your first watch (they're popular for a reason) and AD practices are definitely putting off new customers, but if they give out a hot model to a first-timer over a regular, I'm sure that would tick a lot of people off

I've heard this many times before, I don't quite buy it. I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that Rolex solely increase production of their hard to get SS models for a period of two years. I'm certain that a competent, wealthy and popular brand like Rolex could find a myriad of ways to increase production that would benefit them, but they choose not too because their margins are probably too good right now and they're riding the gravy train. Let's be honest, if sales slumped significantly you can bet your ass that they'd be churning those shitters out and having AD's call every single contact in there phonebook begging for a sale.

We need to stop painting Rolex as a misunderstood saint and victim. While not directly complicit, they refuse to anything to relieve the current glut.

I'm sorry to say that I really don't agree. They're fostering a trend of exclusivity with everything you've said in your post, and it benefits nobody but them. When I bought my first SS model I saved up for four years, buying it was an absolute joy. Someone in those shoes today has no chance of getting through the door unless through patronage or luck. Sure, capitalism, free market and all that, but as someone who used to be a genuine fan of Rolex and actually bought their watches in the past, I'm no longer the kind of person that can buy into that experience anymore and it's frustrating. I think the day when I walked into a store and offered four figures of my savings for something as ultimately meaningless as a watch and then get turned away and told I must spend MORE to get what I want, it's led to some serious soul searching. Not exactly gaining any popularity in my book.

ADs are cancer. Rolex has to maintain their brand reputation. Let's be honest, most SS pieces are nothing special, they are sought after because they are rare. It would make no sense to give everyone a piece. That's how the luxury market works, exclusivity above all.

You both definitely make valid points, but it kind of confuses me that the general hate is always directed at the ADs? The core issue behind all this is the brands simply don’t produce enough to meet demand, and the ADs are just trying their best to allocate. When the waitlists for a Pepsi are 5-7+ years and the AD only get a few each year there’s only so much they can do. I think some are definitely more dishonest than others and maybe I’m being skewed by my experience but my AD is genuinely remorseful at having to turn away a ton of business. Though if you have a sub 7inch wrist you shouldn't go over the 710 or 420 case Amphibia's since the lug to lug is much longer same applies to the 670. Closest compairson is this old pic of spares i sold ages ago, might have a better one if i dig deeper.

The AD never sent the watch to Tudor. He sent it to a friend to repair while lying and saying he mailed it to Switzerland for repairs. The AD literally held on to it for weeks to make him think it was being shipped back and forth from Switzerland
The AD lied, got caught in his lie and lied some more. Then he lied even more saying that Tudor was upset and wanted him to delete the video which was completely false.
Tudor had no part to play in that fiasco and is innocent of any wrong doing. It was completely on the sketchy lying AD.
