Are suits trending skinnier or returning to something looser? Anecdotally I'd say things are getting more loose fitting and less tight than say 2012 but is still a far cry from the BASED 1920s-40s and 1980s revival of that unconstructed look.

Definitely fuller, longer and higher-waisted. Not full-on 30's/40's but closer to that anyway. Check out the looks from Pitti, for instance, or Korean and scandi-italian instagrams.

Early 20s suits were pretty similar to today in terms of tightness; they only loosened up the the second half of the decade. I agree with you that late 20s-40s were nice.

80s went to the same loose fit, but dropped the button stance so much as to make things a bit comical. 90s still had a nice fit, but overcorrected on the button-stance to bring it a bit too high, and they unfortunately kept the gorge at the exagerated lows of the 80s.

Milanese suiting today is where I go for as a decent compromise (good button stance, decent amount of fabric that's not too tight, fair sized lapels), though you have to be careful with how high they put their gorges.

You still need a tailor regardless of the cut off the suit. Don't blame a bad fit on the style.

I hope that suits loosen up and go back to the fucking based cuts from the 80s.
