Timeless fashion doesn't exist.

Let's look at the decades 70s to 2010s. There is not a single piece of clothing you could have worn in each decade without looking like a retarded dork. Even suits changed drastically.

"Timeless" does not literally mean "this would perfectly fit into every conceivable point in human history". It just means that you could wear it over several decades without looking horribly out of place. A pair of basic khakis and a collared shirt is still just as relevant today as it was sixty years ago.

This isn't bad advice. Unless you can regularly afford to get good quality suits, they're a horrible item to trend chase with. Ultra-slim suits are kind of trendy now (although they look like shit) but in a few years pants looking like they're about to burst at the seams from how closely they hug the legs aren't going to be cool.

If you trend chase you end up like those rubes in the 60s-70s who bought from Savile Row tailor Tommy Nutter. Those suits look like absolute shit. You could not wear one of them anywhere now without looking like a caricature.

A quality less trendy 70s suit might still have some hallmarks of the 70s like wider lapels, but it wouldn't have things that could turn the suit into a joke in 2020 like synthetic fabric or flared pants.

idk about a relaxed suit because i think of baggy, regular is fine - either way i get the thinking where suits are timeless and you can probably wear one for decades to come no matter how fat and oddly you get since your suit is loose enough to hide your body. this is all considering if you spent $$$$ on a suit, if it's some mall shit or those mfa brands then yeah go nuts

Considering nobody in fashion has actual taste in fashion, the only timeless fashion are the brand clothing that never or hardly changes. Adidas and Nike look the same decade to decade, you could put on a pair of 80's 70's 90's 00's 10's and nobody would be able to tell the difference. If you want to blend in and be instantly forgettable, go with the "appropriate for serious matters" look Obama has going on here. Unless you're a 4th person, I can't be expected to keep track of you. You're all so easy to lose track of in your boring classic cut suits

I don't want people to think I stand out, I want people to think I'm outstanding. The suits you've posted call attention to themselves - they make themselves look good. I want a suit that makes me look good. I want people to think I'm well dressed, but not be certain why. Classic tailoring accomplishes this. This Tom Ford bullshit will be cringe in 5 minutes.

I actually agree with this opinion 100%.

In the U.S. political world, there is a degree of conservatism you have to keep. Notwithstanding this terrible photo, Brooks Brothers always made pretty solid suits for Obama, as they kept him sharp but understated. The fits were usually pretty solid as well.

I run in a lot of white collar circles, and I really don't get the vibe that there's any expectation of conservatism like that anymore outside of courtrooms and extremely formal boardroom meetings. Most C-suite folk I know are firmly a fan of polo shirts or just generic dress shirts unless they expect to be in important meetings. No-one gives a flying fuck about the cut of your suit unless it looks bad.

In other words, the "traditional" fit is coping for fat people.

(That said, dudes wearing overly-tight suits should also be subject to ridicule. It is uncomfortable to watch dudes in overly-tight suit pants, like >>15410574).

The quality on H&M suits is so fucking bad that if you see one within a few feet of yourself you can immediately tell the fabric is shit and that it's a cheap suit without even FEELING it.

I wouldn't even wear a bespoke Gieves and Hawkes suit cut perfectly to my body if it were made of the material H&M uses. Cheap fabric looks and feels like shit and doesn't last well.

I work in the high net worth individual practice at a large CPA firm, and it's always fun to see what our ultra-wealthy clients wear. We have one billionaire client and he looks like he shops at Kohl's. If you ran into him on the street you'd never guess what he's worth.

That's not to say none of our wealthy clients care about fashion. We do some family office type of bookkeeping work for some clients who don't have a family office, last time I looked at someone's she was spending $100k a year on clothes. Relative to how much money she receives in interest and dividends each year, it'd basically be the equivalent of me shopping exclusively at Goodwill.

I think it’s more that Ford got a different job. I remember having a conversation with an old school sales guy in the Madison store. He thought Ford’s fitting were risible, but he did champion the suits and design. I think his quote was something to the effect that no one was forcing you to tailor the suits like an asshole.

That’s honestly the way I thought about Ford - good suits, styled ridiculously just for the runway but not real life - until the sperg on this thread.

I agree. I understand the appeal of something like slim Mod suits evocative of 1960s youth fashions, but I think the 2010s often took it to extremes in the fashion industry. At least, most suits and jackets worn by young businessmen still fit reasonably rather than skin tight.

Ultra skinny suits occupied a place almost exclusively within high fashion designers and models during the mid-2000s, and that did not really exist yet during the early 2000s, when suits were fashionably worn loose by most standards now. There have always been guys wearing suits with narrow lapels, as opposed to moderate or wide ones, though, and those same suits may either be slim, moderate, or even loose, but rarely were pre-2000s suits ever very skinny, except for some in the 1960s and 1970s worn by fashion-conscious young men called Mods, Skinheads, and Suedeheads, and then later, some more elegantly dressed Punks, New Wave, and New Romantic boys and men that went for a more formal take on those styles.
