There are the medium suspenders which are considered business suspenders which are usually solid colored etc. Then there are skinny/small suspenders which are considered casual suspenders. Make sure that you wear classic braces, not clip ons. Get trousers that have buttons on the inside. If they do not, sew some in yourself or have a tailor do it for you. If you're going to be buying a few pairs make sure you get the classic Y shape and that they are 100% silk. Don't go for any crazy colors. Start with a pair of Navy, black, and gray. That's probably all you need.

I'll say that there are "suspenders", which clip onto the waist of the pant, and "braces", which button onto the inside of the waist. Most slacks and pants will have to be modified with brace buttons by a tailor.

As far as rocking them, I would say avoid being hipstercore about it and air on the side of urbane adult.

Just in case you do not know, braces and suspenders are the exact same thing. The only difference is suspenders are what we call them here in the US and braces are what they call them over in the UK. I still use the word interchangeably though and mostly associate braces with the button fittings and suspenders with clips. Just a little knowledge in case you did not know.
