I actually prefer chippewas to IR's. Less clownish, better sole and more comfortable. The leather isn't quite as thick as the leather rw uses but it's still very good.

Some people prefer leather soles over rubber cz apparently they have better grip. I own both type soles on my shoes but no noticable difference really unless ice gets in the equation.

Like the other guy said, bean boots or wellingtons. I'm gonna add any leather boot with proper welting (e.g. Stormwelt) should do the same job, and you find these in most proper shoemakers. Herring, meermin, and a range of other shoemakers may be a good start.

Imo WS is not worth looking into for what you're after, but thats just me

On a side note if any Aus dudes are looking for a welted shoe, found a maker called None of the above (NOTA) that does blake stitched shoes for around 200-300. A really good alternative over the rubbish that aquilla tries to sell.

Not affiliated btw. I've no problems with blake stitch construction but i know some people do. The price hits a sweet spot thats missing in the Aus footwear industry tho

I'm based in Sydney. Honestly i'd rather just get my leather shoe options from overseas, done so several times. Had to return a pair once to exchange sizes but other than that all good.

A lot of the entry European brands seem reasonably priced (e.g herring shoes, meermin, etc)

Some Asian manufacturers like Chevalier can do MTO's from around high 200s-300s in chromexcel leather. If you can get a Japan proxy Jalan Sriwijaya makes nice leather shoes and boots, and proxy should cost somewhere around $60 shipped including service fees (about 35$ just from shipping up to 2kg via ems)

I know one or two stores here that sell stuff like broken homme but considering the markup from tax and retail, why bother? Red wings are like what, 400-500$ on average? At least last time I checked when one supplier had full monopoly of stocks.

Also have a look at jalan sriwijaya (trickier to get ahold of cz they only sell to Japan, not even local retail has em), junkard company and txture bootmakers. Pic related txture warhorse.
Pricing should be around high 100s up to 300s for Sagara's MTO program.

Yeah but for $900 why not cop guidis or vibergs? Heck i can find carpe diems around that price.

Andrew's stuff is nice and i really do like them, but from his catalogue i'm getting the vibe that you need a specific look to pull them off which my wardrobe still lacks atm (somewhere along the lines of grungy raw Aussie aesthetics like black noise white rain and claudemaus +- carpe diem and related clothing)

I do have Viberg service boots as well.

I have his laceback boots, pictured, in black horse and asym derbys in black horse. They are without a doubt the most comfortable and well built shoes I've ever owned or encountered. I've worn the boots to operas and music festivals, in the middle of the wilderness, alike, without socks and socked. Honestly they're a dream. I really enjoy wearing the boots without socks, the leather feels so good and they've completely formed to my feet. I've had the boots for 4 years now and put them through a lot, they're in absolutely beautiful condition despite being covered in mud a couple dozen times, and I've only ever applied shoe cream once.

I've tried on but never owned John Lobbs Ed Green and Trickers. They just as well made and comfortable. I can't imagine a higher quality of build, materials, or comfort. The rest is just renown and such.
As for the price thing, you can usually get them on sale, I only payed 480 or something for my boots through a good sale from a weird UK retailer that isn't around anymore and 400 for my asym derbys direct from andrew's website. Had a couple conversations with him through email, truly great customer service.

I think his website says his MTOs are like 2 grand. I'd do it if I lived in Australia, I'd have to come up with something interesting to have him make though.

Sorry to gush but I love Andrew McDonald's shit.

Wait hold up, 400 for the derbys in usd or aud? I'm assuming its the former. Either way thats a damn good price for horsehide. Hmmm i might have to reconsider the guidis then haha.

Had a quick look at his current offerings, nothing stands out at the moment in terms of leather options and I have a few reservations about his use of blake stitch construction (i know it has its merrits with the thinner/lighter sole and lower profile it gives), but something interesting to consider. His current sale is around 400 for asym derbies which i'm quite fine with but i just spent 300$ on monk straps last week. In time

Looking for something along the lines of pic related in the future, jap brand and they also make stuff out of elk which is interesting

I hope you're happy with those monk straps, cause the double monks in chocolate cordovan Andrew is selling are pretty ridiculous.

**Not everything he's selling is available in the images when you click men's sale, you have to scroll through once you select a style to see all available shoes.**

I have a hard time now, after purchasing his shoes, justifying any purchase of a "dress" shoe that isn't at least Andrew quality, and at the price point he's at, being a John Lobb trained shoemaker, it's by far the best value around, so long as you dig the aesthetic he's got.

Thanks for the heads up

Yeah i'm happy with mine. Got hender schemes. Ryo, the owner and designer, makes the stuff from his small studio in Japan. People mainly know him for his sneaker homages made in undyed leather, which are hand stitched by him. What most people don't bother looking at is the other leather goods he does, including leather shoes like the ones i have.

Essentially built like a brick imo and i like the thicker sole they use, double soled i think including vibrams. Pic related, i realize the clipon straps aren't for everyone but even the pull tabs feel substantial and high quality. So yeah very happy.

Also on that note, would you/did you bother vibramming your AM's assuming they're leather soled or do you just do a heel replacement? Is it even necessary, assuming you've worn yours down in the last 4 years?

I went 3 years without putting a sole protector on and everything was still fine, but when I did get sole protectors applied, I asked for a particular kind with high traction, they did not do what I asked and it's just some rubber slab that barely gives me more traction than the leather sole, I'm still a bit irritated about that, I need to go get those replaced.

After 3 years they were not even close to needing any kind of sole or heel replacement though.

Saphir products and Alden boot cream. The black tin and the Renomat are to be done sparingly (twice a year) while the white jar (Renovateur) and boot cream after every third or fourth wear. Saphir products are a little steep but considering that they are the top shoe care products that money can buy, I would highly suggest you invest in them; to prove my point, these Grensons are five years old and have seen hundreds of miles of wear: they, arguably, look better now than they did new out of the box.

im kind of torn on this , personally. i actually want to take care of my boots, but i dont wan them to have that "shine". (just personal preference i guess). thats why i avoid a lot of the boot creams and shoe polishes. but i still want something that nourishes the leather and protects. it rarely rains where i live, so i dont see a need for obenhaufs. do you think i should just use red wing boot oil oil? id rather use something that doesnt darken the leather either.

>> No.9903324

>>9903255
You really can't have one without the other; it's like asking for a burger without the buns. Oils and creams are protecting layers that are shiny exactly because they are a coat of protection against rain, scuffing, general wear, dirt, etc. Depending on the grade of materials of both your boots and care products, you can minimize the shine- Venetian Shoe Cream might suffice here, but overall I'd suggest very strongly against anything with silicates, as silicate-based products warp and do more damage than good to leather over time. Good products will explicitly state that they either don't use these artificial chemicals or are natural-based, either way they'll be more expensive but more valuable in the long-term

A Topy brand thin rubber sole usually leaves the couple of inches just forward of the heel bare, in the middle. I've had them as well as beefy Vibram hiking rubber soles stiched on to naked leather soled boots. Even with the thin Topy you'll actually notice a little less flex in the sole when you walk. It stiffens the sole by constricting the previous free flexibility.

Leather soles can be rebuilt and allow your foot to breathe through the sole. Leather will roughen up if given time but I prefer a layer of rubber for better traction, resilience to stones when I hike and to protect my investment.

>>9896784
>>9896750
Timberland Earthkeepers are fine. The soles are very thin though. You'll feel peddles right through them more than even with running shoes. Compared to other boots listed they can't be rebuilt or resoled. Still, they are great for the price.

I live on Vancouver Island and visit the Viberg factory store every so often. Check their regular range of boots for a relatively inexpensive basic version of their premium boots.

My favourites are a pair of White's and 1000 miles than were so beat up but proper restoration they look amazing.
