How do you get into the Japanese animation industry? I don't actually want to animate, but I'll do any other job.

If you had the opportunity to mentor a complete beginner for the next 3 years, and they were fully invested in following your instructions, what would your self-made curriculum be? What books, exercises, and time-schedules would you have them follow?

Stop refreshing the election page anon. Just put on some music, get some good tea, and draw!

Those of you learning to make Digital Art, what does your practice routine generally look like? I've been drawing trad for a couple years and I'd like to make the transition to digital, and I'm pretty mystified by all the possibilities. Hearing experiences of how others learned the medium would be very helpful.

I was buying a sketchbook from Walmart today and some old guy randomly started talking to me in the aisle, he was really nice and encouraging (I told him I was a /beg/) and we got into a conversation about art and I asked about his life and stuff. Well, apparently he drawn and painted his whole life and he attended an atelier after his uncle's friend (who was a teacher there) urged him to come learn after he graduated highschool.

I asked him what it was like and he said it was hard work but worth it, and there they made him study drawing, painting, and sculpting. He said sculpting was very challenging for him, but he said his painting/drawing got better way quicker because sculpting helped him visualize what he was drawing in 3d and understand the form better.

So the wisdom he imparted in me is basically that to be a great artist you should learn "the holy trinity" as he called it: Drawing, Painting, and Sculpting. He said drawing is the foundation of everything, painting teaches you color, and sculpting helps you understand the 3d world so you can better represent it on a 2d plane. So, he urged me to study all three disciplines.

While I don't have the resources to afford trad painting or sculpting, but I do draw trad and paint digitally everyday. I figure I could get blender and maybe learn sculpting that way as well but idk. It seems like a lot to take on since I'm still beg at the other two things.

What does /ic/ think? Was that old guy legit? Should a beg like me (or someone of any skill level who hasn't already) try to learn "The Holy Trinity"?
