I did some studies of anime hands a little further up in the thread. taking an anime with a style you like and doing some direct copies can help a lot with deciphering what works and what doesn't

hard to say, you should plan out these sorts of things in the sketch/layout phase of the drawing, it makes big artistic decisions much less stressful. you could have one of the fronds casting like along the back, maybe one on the head obscuring the top half of the face in shadow if you want some drama. if you have a digital drawing program, you could try painting over your scan digitally to try and see what different set ups might look like
