If you have a particular artist / style in mind, color picking and understanding the thought process behind a color choice goes long ways. Try to focus on replicating a particular part of a drawing (hair? bobs? creases in a skirt? etc) The rendering journey is about finding your own tricks to render something quicker. Practice a lot, never considered your works as masterpieces. It's better to pump 20 hair studies than try to produce a full illustration where you tried something new for rendering. Focus on understanding how something is done and you'll find your own way of doing things along the way.

I'll take that as a compliment. I don't try to pass as japanese, but more likely incorporate stuff i like from japanese style into my own eurofag culture and references.
