Fuck am I glad someone made a lineart thread, exactly what I was looking for.

Can anyone spare some tips for me? I'm a huge fan of Sakurai Energy's lineart in their doujins, so I tried to trace to see how close I can mimic it but the quality difference is apparent.
I tried to limit myself to 1 stroke per line(since I'm assuming the artist got most of their lines in one stroke) and was bouncing between brush sizes 2-5, but didn't really keep a close eye to which I used the most. Only used the G-pen that's displayed for the drawing.
And also obviously didn't attempt to do the highlights/screentones since I'm just focusing on the lines for now.

>>3194860
This is a hard one to answer. I've done some really close copies before, but something about tracing almost makes that harder? Maybe not, maybe I just don't have enough practice with tracing.

But I suggest you give copying a try, even if you do it in a sort of math way. Like dragging lines across the reference to your copy, so you know where things like chins, or hair lines, or eyes begin, and then drop vertical lines downward to work out the width of shoulders and stuff like that.

I'm not sure how much help that does to teach you drawing, but it'll at least ingrain a bit of the artist you're copying's style into your memory or muscle memory.

If you can copy using construction you'll learn a bit more.

Attached is an example of a copy practice I did earlier this year using the more technical methods. You can easily find the original on the internet and compare it, it's from Gunsmith Cats.

Thank you for the advice! But I'm not trying to copy the artist's artstyle itself, if anything I'm trying to copy the way they lineart. The biggest quality I'd like to adopt is how they vary their line weight in their doujins. So I was wondering if anyone here had like, brush setting recommendations or if they could tell something was off with how I'm making my strokes compared to the OG artist.
Btw I like your study, yours looks a lot cleaner than the original and it's nice. Tho you should work on the hair, the way the original does split/loose hairs looks a lot more natural and realistic.

>>3194885
Oh you're right! I forgot to change the DPI and left it at 72. I'll check right now how much difference that makes. I thought that was just a setting with the brush.

>>3194890
Also though, I appreciate your loose hairs comment for two reasons. 1, you're right. But 2. it reminds me advice to give you. The reason my hair looks less loose than the original is because it's actually sticking to a pattern.

I used shapes to get the shape of the hair, then added the splits only afterwards, which I think is somewhat how the original artist does it to, it gives it that look. But as you pointed out, he made them a bit wispier, more realistic. Mostly just by adding white.

>> No.3194947

>>3194860
you got almost as close as you're going to get. The smaller lines line on her face (the blushing cheeks, the detail lines on her clothes that are shading lines, not outlines) you could mimic a little better by using a smaller brush, or by cheating and lightening the color from black to a grey.

You said you used a size 2, so you may have to raise the resolution in order to do it, if you use the smaller brush method.

Your quality would also have been higher if you did the trace with a higher resolution, you wouldn't see any pixel jags.

Other than that, you did as good a job as anyone could hope for.

I see in the navigator window that you only used a bit of your canvas. You could flip the canvas, then flip the image too, so that you have the image be horizontal. Then you could size it up. But I'm not sure it would look good, it might just make it look more pixelated.

Anyway, I'm going to assume it took you a long time to do this, so you might just want to be happy with what you have done, and try these tips for next time.

A real one? Yah, smooth lines you'll have to learn just by doing, but one biiiig tip, WATCH WHERE YOU REST YOUR HAND. Cause you WILL smear ink if you're not used to a dip pen.

Also, if the ink isn't running cause its old or something, you can add a touch of water.

And nibs wear out faster than people think, that's important too. So check the nib to make sure it's not split, if it keeps dropping ink.

That's about it!

>>3195002
mm yah paper is important. if its too thin you'll tear it, and if its not the right kind it'll feather like you said

you have to find paper that was made for ink

check out your art store and when you pick up a sketchbook it should say on the back whether it was made for ink or marker or etc. what it can hold.

there are lots of good brands out there.

After you've used some paper that works you'll get a good feel/idea of what paper to use with real ink

unfortunately the cheapest paper that can handle ink is still going to be fairly high quality paper. You will need to get over your precious feelings about sketchbooks because to my knowledge that's the easiest source of a lot of paper for ink.

There are certain brands that are good, you don't have to spend a ton of money for a good sketchbook if you go to a real art store and stay away from places like Michaels.

I hope you don't mind me asking here, since it's a lineart thread: what kind of tools do you think Shimura is using for her lineart? I like how she colors it, but I can't tell in some places if she used some kind of ink or colored pencils.

Look at the eyes of the top left one, and the interior of the waist & arm of the bottom left one, it's not flat enough to be ink. I think it's mixed. Lines on the dress of the middle one do look like ink on a pen.

>>3201139
>>3201148
Yeah, that's what mostly caused my dilemma too. After looking at more photos, I'm going to assume her process is:
>sketch out idea in notebook
>do the drawing in ink
>watercolors time
>add weight to lines using a black colored pencil or something similar
>fix things up with colored pencils and add highlights
The thing that confused me the most is that thin red/orange pen she uses because I haven't seen something like that often, I'll look into it.

isn't the red/orange just sepia ? I'm thinking it's sepia ink, then watercolor, and black (watercolor?) pencil to add line weight/contours, like you said.
I don't see no highlights, just the standard watercolor blank paper light tho.
My problem is if it is actually pencil, or just large enough pen and the thick & rough watercolor paper.

Oh yeah, that was based on another drawing from her that I didn't post here.
>My problem is if it is actually pencil, or just large enough pen and the thick & rough watercolor paper.
That was confusing me too, but it seems she uses B pencils for that and Sakura Pigma Micron pens for some of the lines, but there's a lot of mixed stuff depending on the drawing.

Relying on direction of the hatching for value doesn't look good. It prevents the actual apparition of volume. learn to thicken your lines, or cross, or both, but let your lines follow the directions of the plane you're shadowing.

Nothing too specific, you basically need
>good line quality
(draw from your shoulder, hands loose but firm)
>know your planes
(always follow the direction, the energy, the contour - understand your form)
>know how to create tone using line
(lines clump together to create shapes, spacing influences value, line thickness and so on)

Things like texture and areas of high detail vs areas of rest are important to keep in mind.
I'd say Dynamic sketching (/drawabox) is a good start and from there do a lot of experimenting.
It's a technique that's hard on draftsmanship but brings results.

I think I'm mystified by Bernie Wrightson's Frankenstein drawings because despite the scenes often being filled to the brim with bottles and papers and tiny detail elements, the compositions are so well thought out that the viewer has no problem seeing the most important information first, before getting lost in the intricate details. A reminder to never forget about the whole image from beginning to end.
