3541159 No.3541159 [Reply] [Original]

So this is an odd question; I've been working with the same artist for the last 5 month doing whatever ideas came to mind. Recently I've been thinking of trying a brand new artist as this current artist is getting slower with my work and in general I just want to try something new. Anyway, I told him last night that I think I'm going to stop commissioning him and move on.

He didn't take it well, ask what he did to upset me, was I leaving him for another artist, what we did wrong etc etc. He basically was begging me to stay and pay him more. Are art breakups always this odd? Should I have handled it any better?

I’m going to side with the artist on this one. If you’re doing regular and frequent commissions together you cannot just stop cold turkey without warning. It’s unfair because the artist is depending on your money for income.

Unfair? It is just business. If you started slacking off a your job you would be disciplined. That is what is happening with this artist. Either he gets it together, or OP should leave and find another artist.

Sorry bro, if there is no contract then there is nothing wrong with it. In a minimum wage job you give 2 weeks notice so they can train another employee, when you move out of an apartment you give the landlord notice so they can find another person to pay them, and those are because of legal contracts. outside of that it's just courtesy to give warning, like when a patreon donor suddenly stops pledging they dont need to give notice, when you hire a certain baby sitter over and over you dont need to tell them ahead of time that youre going to hire someone else from now on. Saying they relied on op for money is just saying they were spoiled by them.

>unfair

that's relative, maybe they are best friends or partners or something, but from a pure business standpoint the commissioner can give him the foot whenever he likes, even if he's super pleased with his work, maybe he wants to try someone else. And it's his right to do so.

And to be fair, OP seems like a beg unprofessional commissioner, and leading himself to be dependent on such a guy wouldn't get him far. He should grind more and look for actual professional commissioners. Someone who has a company that is looking out for you, where projects depend on your style and choices, where both-sided loyalty is actually a thing ... but not some fuckin DA-tier pseudo magazine commissioner

HOW THE FUCK ARE YOU GOING TO SURVIVE WITHOUT YOUR ART PAL?
DO YOU LIKE IT, FAGGIT?!
HOW WOULD YOU LIKE IT IF YOUR ART PAL SAID 'NO' TO YOUR COMMISSION?

Kinda in a same situation but i'm the artist. Client has this project and he doesn't mind throwing some serious cash at me, actually helped me break my reluctance in raising prices.

One thing though I'm not really into the world he's building. It has a heavy Chinese influence in the artstyle department and I hate detailing patterns into my work. I use custom brushes to do get past that but I have to simplify the pose for that to work or it just won't wrap with the forms properly.

I'm starting to get burned out and want to work on something else. Even resorted to working for exposure bucks just to freshen things up.

Do you like Huey Lewis and the News? Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. ... In '87, Huey released this; Fore!, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.
