This is a good question. I actually wanted to buy a tablet when I first started learning to draw, but wasn't sure how much is commit. Instead, I opted for a sketchbook and some drawing materials.

However, my sketch book eventually capped out, and I kept needing to buy drawing materials. A cheap tablet can be under 100$ and is perfect for beginners. Overall, havin bought traditional materials overtime, I have spent atleast 100$ (sketchbooks, coloring pencils, and good erasers). Though it was over a course of a year or so.

So with that being said, I think it's always good to be traditional at first, but maybe not for too long if you want to draw digitally.

I'm guessing you didn't get any responses last time you posted it because there's not too much to comment about.

Here's my issues, as a /beg/ myself:

- Her eyes are a bit too droopy. I understand that's probably what you were going for and not a mistake, but it's not flattering at all and makes it look like a mistake.
- Her entire torso is black or very dark so I can't see what's going on. Makes it feel like a black hole, especially against the black background.
- Her left (our right) arm is good enough, but her right arm:
+ doesn't follow the normal form of human arms
+ there's some sort of wiggle right before her elbow that doesn't fit
+ her elbow juts out wrong

Otherwise there's not much else I can comment about.

I've asked this in /sqt/ but maybe I'll get some help here:

---

Help me out, anons. I keep having a rough time placing things on a face without ref. Look...

> draw circle
> eyes along some horizontal line

Now I start having problems.

> how far away are the eyebrows from the eyes?
> if I split the face in thirds, I get hairline/brows/nose/chin, but how am I supposed to split in thirds if I don't have the full face height yet?
> I've done full video courses for both Huston and Vilppu ... it looks like they magically guess the height of the face then divide it in thirds. How?

With ref I can kinda figure it out after a few iterations, but I only realize something's wrong without ref once I'm in too deep.

This is so hard. Pic related.

tl;dr: I cannot construct the position of the chin without guessing.

Fellow beginner here. I hear a lot about the importance of the muscles and spooky skeletons beneath the skin. The only way I'm able to draw faces without a reference is if I draw a skull and then go from there. Its not super detailed or anything like that but I get the basic proportions I want from the skull and go from there. The drawing comes about very naturally that way.

this looks to be done informally so it's probably just eyeballed and you'll be able to do that more accurately with milage but I'll try to tell you how I'd bring it back from informal to formal. forgive if this comes out as jibberish as I've been sipping john collins since noon
there might be a more informal method but it's not known in my drunken state so to my knowledge I would
>extend top and bottom of squares to common vanishing point to determine EL
>extend out perspective 45 from top right to lower right corner of a couple of thestanding squares (because of principles of squares)
>markate intersection of these lines as station point
>plot out real 45 degree angle from sp to el to find a 45 degree reference point for ground plane (either side works)
>cast line back from 45 degree ref. pt. through respective bottom corner of standing square to find correct perspective depth of ground plane square (the depth will be where line from 45 degree ref pt interscts with width of ground plane square converging to your vp on the left
if you don't know formal linear perspective there are plenty of free lectures on youtube
hope to god you read this being that this is the abandoned dupe /beg/ thread of page 3 and it took me like 10m for my drunk ass to write this
cheers

from these drawings it looks to me like you're carefully copying contours and shapes rather than thinking about form, which would slow you down yeah. just look at those cloth wrinkles on the 50 minute drawing, or the pelvises on the bottom left drawings, they don't look 3d at all

try going through some ref photos and putting down just bare body masses in space, without any contour at all: torso, head, pelvis, and see how it turns out. like these bridgman mannequins. i think that'll help you figure it out.

That pic is pretty good. I'm mainly criticizing the placement of the features, the sizes are fine.

For your previous picture, the two drawings on the right have their features placed wrong. The problem is in the incorrect conception of the mass of the head. That is, the ball + jaw was drawn warped and without form. And then you inevitably laid the guidelines on top of that form wrong.

I would rather understand why things are drawn the way they are, how things are suppose to work in 3D space, how perspective and construction work.
I think those things are more important then just making something that looks nice.

It's honestly kinda sad that you don't agree. There's a reason why math teachers always tell you to show your steps, because they don't care if the final answer is wrong or right, they only care how you got there.

I find most of my life drawing has a relatively flat, somewhat stiff look, I realize shading can help with this but when I look at sketches of artists I really like such as Frazetta, it's clear you get a sense of movement and 3d space. So I guess I want advice on perspective, I think my proportions are pretty ok. Do axis lines really help that much? I underuse them, because I find the more guidelines I put down the blocky-er a character turns out. I'm going through Bridgmans life drawing currently.

So you're saying that anyone can solve a calculus problem just by looking it, even if they've never once studied math in their entire life?
All that have to do is "use their brains" and eventually they'll solve it?

Well Newton invented calculus that way, so yeah fuck you. But less flippantly, trying something when you're not entirely sure how to do it can often clarify what you don't understand in a way that's not as obvious when someone is just telling you what to do. It makes it much easier to understand the purpose of what you're being taught. And sometimes you genuinely discover something for yourself before you're explicit taught it, and that feels great and probably sticks with you more than another thing

Thank you for the comments. I'm afraid I don't know anything about Ambient Occlusion and I'm about to look up some information about it, so I don't know where you want me to add stronger values to make it more readable. I'm also not sure where to start making the hands and face more legible besides drawing over them on a separate layer with a rough outline to cement the forms without breaking the silhouette. I was just gonna jump right into blending the values and making it read better from there. Pic related, but I wasn't content with the process and decided to try again but apply all my knowledge of the female anatomy of the torso to the painting on a separate layer to make sure I know what I'm doing.

>>4127642
Look up various references close to the ideal image that you want and use those to determine whether of not you think it's passable. In my opinion, I think the right breast is too stiff; I'd draw it conforming around her torso in order to show off how soft they are. In addition to that, I'd like to reccomend using a soft contour for the areola's edge closest to the sternum, makes the juggers that much more appealing.

>>4127637
Hampton's course on gesture drawing supplemented with the drawabox courses could help with construction and making sure your forms are drawn proportionately and accurately, imho. It'd help to learn that so you can start drawing your Korean cartoon shit after getting proficient enough.

Why did you switch to digital so suddenly? Anyway, the new one is an improvement in a way in terms of correct anatomy and the values are better, but the values aren't as varied. To fix that, I think you should just simply push them a bit more and illustrate more hard shadows in addition to the soft ones you've recognized. For example, the male's neck should use more hard shows and his hair's highlights should be brighter than they are in your image. If you are familiar with using textures, it wouldn't hurt at all to use them in your drawing to really give a better feel all around, it's very apparent that you used only one brush to get this done; which is fine, but not an ideal thing you want to be noticed. Again, I want to reiterate that you did an excellent job of the placement of the facial features on this and I want to let you know I'm proud of you.

That's fascinating to me but I'm not certain if I know what you mean. I want my art to be funny and inventive but also conversant and personable, where many details are incorrect but the ideas are fully seen through. My sketchbooks are admittedly an outgrowth of my notebooks, which contain many drawings at the header or in the margins. A number of disciplines may have cross-contaminated.

Don't follow Loomis too closely. His stuff is better as an introduction into understanding what you need to study and how, the what being the fundamentals of art; construction in particular. Your faces are okay, but I think you'd benefit more from being able to visualize the basic shapes that make up the facial features and everything else after the fact. Try to focus more on the simple stuff and then adding details onto it, perspective will play a huge role in that.

Start with two values then quickly move to three values. Hard brush, no opacity. Two values can tell a story. Three values can show a form: light, half tone, shadow. Then add in a fourth and fifth value: highlight, halftone, reflected light, form shadow, cast shadow, ordered lightest to darkest. Most paintings can be broken down this way and you can start to incorporate concepts like ambient occlusion (areas where light cannot reach, I see it as a kind of form shadow), and local value (important in getting grayscale pictures to read well).

you should understand form before applying values.
painting values is describing how the light is interacting with the form, basically understand how the object exist in 3D space.

what i meant is that you should describe the form of the model with lines better.
of course you could draw the silhouette and then apply values if you are really good

also you can always draw messy lines and then with a new layer on top draw cleaner lines, it really helps when you try to paint it afterward

work in progress for a contest. black white and green only. Suggestions are more than welcome. Especially on how to warm up green. I really have a difficult time working with green.

Tomorrow I can. It’s the lighting combined with the wet paint.

Starting off with Loomis and I'm digging his style for people. It gives off that old Americana style if it's even called that or something you would see in an old noir comic or something. Is there a name for it so I can study it more? I'm still shit.

I dried drawing some butts and I think the top right is the best one, still not great though.

How would you construct this face, step-by-step?
Been a while since I've done construction with FWaP and realized I can't quite get it right again.

You should study and copy artists you admire, just don't stick to a single one or you'll learn to be a rip-off.

This is the best I can do with the glare. Actually I’d love some advice on lighting my studio properly. Maybe I’ll make a thread about it because the lighting in my studio is not working for me. I get a really bad glare when the paint is wet.

I'd say *maybe* have the shadow of the planet stand out a little more and not have it blend into the sky as much. Then again like you said it could be the lighting of your studio, pretty good nonetheless, I love murky ethereal type stuff.

Started lines and shading on this dude last night

>> No.4130121

I keep hearing that you should never chicken scratch, and your lines should be confident, but when i watch some professionals draw gesture, they seem to do (what I as a novice) would call chicken scratching. I might be completely misunderstanding the term, but I see the people teaching gesture draw over their lines multiple times. Please could someone explain what's going on?

>> No.4130216

>>4130121
Drawing over your lines is fine, that's called restating. Chicken scratching is when you make many small strokes from your wrist to create a larger line piece by piece.

First time I've ever attempted to draw on a computer. I know it's whack and shitty. Right now I'm trying to get the breasts at least close to good. I'm using this for drawing my own character in a TTRPG game I'm playing. I know I'm shit compared to the rest of you, but please help me out. I can't figure out what I'm missing here.

whats up /ic/. I've recently been trying to get my fire back for drawing and decided to start doing digital art. It took a while but I'm starting to better adjust to using a tablet w/o a screen. Any tips you can give me on my sketch and on how to make better use of the tablet.

I'm using manga studio EX btw.
