I personally find that I do a lot better without music or something ambient when I'm designing/concepting. I definitely get distracted by lyrics

When I'm rendering or doing less cognitively intensive tasks I listen to podcasts or music with lyrics. I personally listen to symphonic metal and bluegrass.

Something that matches the energy or subject matter. If it's a neutral piece, I'll usually listen to whatever I feel like. I love listening to Hiroshi Yoshimura when drawing serene or neutral stuff. But there's also plenty of times where I won't listen to anything.

For me there certainly art times when I need my utmost concerntration and won't listen to music (pretty much just studying technical things). But I have unwanted wandering thoughts while painting and listening to music allows me to actually focus on my painting and the mood of the music, so my mind doesn't wander and I don't get bored during tedious parts of the process.

I like to put on something mild (ambient, post-rock, slow rock, etc) just to start. Once I get in the zone I forget about it and wont notice the silence until I'm done.

quit calling everything a meme retard, its advice. i first heard it myself when i started animating and reading animators survival guide, because he has a whole page dedicated to informing the reader his own experience with people 'plugged in', that they make mistakes someone who isn't listening to music while working doesn't. of course that is to say that all music is the same, classical music, in his example, is an art itself and you are going to try giving it full attention if you cared at all about it which is distracting. or any music you might maybe know the lyrics of, you cannot focus at all. but something like videogame osts which are designed to be forgetful and play in the background are probably fine. i think of it myself like human brains have so many 'threads' they can work on and ideally if you needed to learn you would minimize as much workload for your brain as possible
