He's an industry pro and it shows. Most of his advice is very good, and he seems like a nice enough guy. He does a good job teaching via other artists, who he's usually very flattering towards despite the clickbait titles. Definitely not the worst youtube artist to learn from. His persona is kind of annoying, but it's attention grabbing and seems to be working for growing his channel pretty damn fast so more power to him I guess.

Very deliberate personality. He uses clickbait titles that sometimes mention famous artists names to get clicks, then uses a very bizarre persona to make him memorable so you're more likely to keep coming back.

It doesn't matter if you love or hate him, you'll remember him, and the algorithm's on his side to, a win-win on his part.

As for his artwork and tips, he's focused on producing viable work in a production pipeline thus all of the tracing and quick tips like using triangles for hands instead of just doing studies.

I like how practical he is in that sense and guys, he's working for big animation companies, learning as he goes.
A lot of users could learn a think or two for using shortcuts. Yeah it'll put a bad taste in your mouth but making up your own tricks sound like a lot of creative fun; far better than constant grinding but that's important if you actually want freedom in what you draw so it's a balancing act or getting work out on time and developing skills.

I have never done fan art. I have worked at a number of small studios and two of my roommates work at Warner Brothers.

I've seen people loose out on jobs because they couldn't keep their mouths shut or because they had crappy social skills, but they still found work elsewhere.

Pricks like him are evaded at work and don't last long in the studio. The annoying cubebrush people are given shittier work to do until they leave themselves or are never promoted.
My instructors years back explicitly made the point and shared experiences with these types of people not being a good fit in the studio, from both extremes. The person who is very quiet and only sits in his cubicle doing his work and the almost rumbustious attitude that is irritable will either not get the job in the first place or will be temporarily held onto until someone better comes along.

Doesn't matter how good their work is, such people will only be hired as sub-contracted freelancers, never in decades old secure positions at an established studio. Whenever you see the behind the scenes documentary type making of videos for Pixar movies for example, pay attention to the mannerisms and type of person doing the work. It's not just the work, but the work ethic and personality, a family member.

Ethan's game is clear, pick out some of the largest art- social media stars and make a video that highlights one thing that is different between their work and his work. His job working on voltron and his inspirations have a very limited over all range. Because of this, his tutorials are very unique towards his career path.

I noticed this first in either the james' or sinix video, Where he outright admitted to knowing a very basic practical anatomy. In his line of work, where shape design, abstraction and stylization trump everything, this fits perfectly fine. But moving towards a more illustration focused career, you will be left out by people who know their muscle groups and can accurately place them without loosing hours pouring over reference, trying to understand how surface shapes change during motion since he doesn't understand how muscles really work

all in all, if you're looking to specifically get into his line of work, doing character designs, he's a solid source (if you can handle all the false bravado) but if you're looking to be more an illustrator, concept artist, classical artist ect. some of the things he guides you away from
