Why You Should Copy Anime:
https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0
https://youtu.be/t_IODIIYAe0

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

>>4655522
What the others said, at least 2x-4x of your output. That doesn't mean you have to start there, you can and should thumbnail at lower resolutions if you want to use interesting brushes that lag at larger sizes or smudging. It's fine to start at like 1000px and then expand your canvas to the desired output when you're happy with the composition.

I'm not sure what that started as but they probably started that with a square canvas like 4k^2, 3k^2, or 3840x3840, there's a lot of weird aliasing on the lines which makes me think it wasn't a multiple of the output. When you're working, stay completely zoomed out for most of it, only zooming in for the detail passes or lining.

Since I mostly post for webshit and don't care about print I just do either 4000x4000 or 6000x4000/4000x6000 for a final piece. They give you enough room to crop shit out if need be while still being generously oversized if you want to print later.

Anon that posted the Beatrice taking a dump sketch yesterday. Decided to help motivate me, I'm going to post stuff sometimes here to catalog my progress. Just finished some face studies since I'm trying to figure out what the magic is that makes the difference between looking pro and looking like a Deviantart kid's How to Draw Manga attempt.

I think it's literally just about clean lines and being careful about accuracy. It matters a shit ton, even more for cartoons than drawing from life. Like you can't be sketchy at all. It needs to be sharp, and accurate.

Because you have specific things that you want to see drawn that you can grow to be able to do yourself? If you have specific fetishes, that's one big reason. Otherwise in general, it's just about you having your own ideas that you wish you could put to paper with a degree of skill. If you don't have this desire, then yeah idk why you would want to learn to draw.

how would you improve this crab?
or do you think a protruding biceps and triceps or a sartorius passing through the leg would be suitable for a bodytype loli?

the leg already has a subtle adductor indication which is compatible for this type of body, and it is clearly possible to see a difference in volume in the limbs, they are not just cylinders

if you're going to follow your shit crab logic, something like a related pic would also be sausage limbs since it's not muscular enough, and before you sperg about it, draw it, show us how to improve it

Copy his work but also learn to draw real eyes and anatomy. Ito has studied and drawn for years now, referencing a lot of real life things.

>>4658023
I wouldn't recommend it for beginners. Later on it can be useful to help figure out the traits or subtleties you don't immediately see, but as a beginner you'll still be symbol/icon drawing. For this post, I did a 15-20 min study with some tracing for something I've never drawn before. I find this to be an efficient way to study, you'd do the same with tracing paper of old masters paintings.

1 is a block in of what immediately strikes me, trying to evoke the character without getting lost in details. 2 is a trace over to feel the shapes and proportions but not completely copy it, you can spend a lot more time in this step if you're trying to dissect a style. 3 is a freehand copy informed by steps 1 and 2. I feel more confident with this character and style now. I could move on to a clean sketch/inking or trying to draw turnarounds if I really want to drill it in.

Tracing can be a helpful study tool, but use it in moderation and try to understand things from first principles like construction and measuring. Trace some photos of real life and then hide the original, it takes work to make a trace look good. There are all sorts of distortions brought on by cameras that you have to correct otherwise it looks very flat. It's easier to make a drawing look good by learning how to draw with construction and reference than tracing. If you don't know how to draw, tracing won't help much and it'll be very apparent which parts were traced. As you draw more, your innate sense of measuring will improve passively.

Saying A4 is meaningless without the dpi. At 300 dpi, that's 2480x3508. At 72, that's 595x842.

You don't have to scale it down, but it's usually done to prevent people from reselling your work. Resizing also acts as a filter to hide imperfections, like supersampling in games to render at 2-4x your monitor's resolution then resize it back down so you don't need to use anti-aliasing. You should generally keep the master resolution to yourself and upload something smaller. And a 90 or high quality JPG instead of a PNG for social media. PNG files will be ridiculously large.

I draw every day for about 8-14 hours, I've been working at this rate for about 3ish years? I've been drawing for a bit over 5 years.

I expose myself to as many inspirations as possible. I collect art from thousands of artists from as many genres as possible, and look over it to see what techniques catch my eye. I use xnviewMP to catalog artists by what I like about their work. I try very very hard to look for what each artist is best at, even if they aren't good or if their content isn't to my taste, so I can learn from everything.

To study I think about what I find interesting and why. I'll think about the way something was painted and it's process, and I think about the decisions they made. I'll copy artists I like in my studies and when I am drawing something original I'll look over pictures for ideas on how to handle problems I face. For example, with the smoke in that pic I looked at this and tried to think about the patterns used, then recreate with my understanding.

I think the biggest reason that I am where I am today is that I just didn't give up. I know I can be better, and I am working hard now to make the life of future me better.

I feel this. Everything is a gamble, and there are some points where it's not the best gamble to make. Spend as much time as you can building your skills so that if you do feel you're in a position to make the change you can. When I was working in an office I would practice drawing on the train too and from work on pen and paper, and also sketch when I could on paper while I worked. The results were rough, but I was constantly training my brain to think through things.

>>4664843
Fundamentals are absolutely the most important thing. It's important to constantly study fundamental skills while trying to push how far you can take them. I found a lot of success in studying Fun with a pencil then Vilppu's basic figure drawing book, and this guide also helped me understand how to approach studying art.

I would say that it took me about 4 years to consistently create something that I am proud of.

I have two pieces of advice that might help you,
What helped me stick through all the bad art was seeing all the bad pieces I made as stepping stones to the good stuff. Accept that it will be bad. you can't escape that, but every time you make something bad, spend time looking at it and make notes of why you feel it's bad. It doesn't need to be fixed, but just making a note of "my shoulder anatomy skills are weak, I need to spend some time studying shoulders" will help you overcome your hurdles.

Second, understand that at every point in time, there is an absolute ceiling of what you can accomplish, but when you push yourself it raises slightly higher. I remember with a pic I worked on a month ago I wanted to render the eyes similar to krenz. I tried, but everything I produced was just not as good, and never had the same feel. In the end I felt defeated, and gave up making the eye better. The picture itself was neat, I did some really neat stuff I was proud of but I had to accept that my skill with eyes just wasn't at the level I wanted it to be at. I can see the quality I want, but I can't comprehend how to get there. But I can see that there is a gap, and I am looking forward to doing some realistic eye studies to improve. But I had to do something I can see is wrong before I'll be able to do it better.

These are the books I studied https://mega.nz/#F!hYAwlYhb!4T2ajC8oWkqnkW9u9pVNtA

In order to start I suggest loomis FWAP, perspective made easy, Vilppu, mattesi, hampton. The others all offer some different perspectives, or specific things (like gurney's colour + light). Creative illustration is fantastic.
The hogarth and bridgman ones I include because they offer a alternative explanation that helped explain some things for me, also head+hands stuff is always good. I think that due to their wildly different drawing style, it can help understand some things about drawing.
Alla Prima is a really great book, gave me some good tools to approach painting and how to think about art.

To study loomis/vilppu I suggest having a quick flip through of all the pages and seeing what it's about, then work through each section where you copy the studies, then do your own and think about what you're drawing and what's being taught. A site like quickpose helps with gesture stuff. I tend to go back and read something to help job my memory about specific things (especially colour/light)

I don't have talent. When I was a kiddo in school, I didn't get any awards for anything. When I started art people told me I would never make it. But because I know that I have no talent, I know I have to work harder than everyone else. That's why I autisticly draw all day so I do make it.

Honestly, reading this is pretty motivational as someone starting out, but I'm also a stubborn dumb bastard, I can see the advice, but because I'm an idiot I have a hard time imagining how I could apply it, and I know damn well the reason I can't imagine it or I chalk up the excuse as my imagination/creativity not having been developed, is because I haven't tried it, and practiced the stuff in say Loomis. I know it'll bite me in the ass most likely sometime down the line, but for now I guess I'll follow whats listed on the pastebin in the OP, and aim for being able to draw stuff thats passable, but keep my end goal in mind throughout learning.

I did a couple more studies from FLCL. Someone told me to try doing them in pen, gonna try doing that next time. right now these studies are to get a general 'feel' for how they draw and stylize stuff. trying to imagine the process. the poses are really cool, the more cartoony ones are really fun to draw.
When looking at the finished poses in the anime, I always wondered how they came to them since they look so perfect. but while studying them, I got the impression that the animator was just kinda like "eh, fuck it, it'll look like this." feels very off the cuff and natural, and most importantly they seem super lively. don't know how to explain it exactly

At this point you are either laughing or crying at the complete negligence of life drawing, it is as if you actually want to cripple yourself and remain a mediocre one trick pony that continues to draw floating amawu heads in the same 3/4 view it is very depressing. You want to know if it is helpful? No, it isn't It's a great way to sabotage yourself by having to unlearn all that crap you are doing now instead of going straight to bare bone fundamentals and applying them to what you want.

The only thing you've learned here is how offset that mouth is but because you have preconditioned yourself with horrible advice in this threads so much you actually believed this was a good "reference" and now you think you have learned that these sidemouths/flounder faces are somehow correct and acceptable because it is some kind of style. Well it's not, it originates from animating on the cheap it is not a style it is there to save time and money in order to remain on a strict deadline and budget. Fucking hell these threads.

We think kind of similarly. I've been working about 8 or more hours daily for about 5 years now, and I think you're making great progress! I think what would help you most is getting back in touch with anatomical fundamentals. Of course copying artists you like is fun, but understanding the anatomy underneath makes it a much more enjoyable experience to dissect another artist's creation. There are a lot of proportional issues in your drawing, and that may be because you didn't sketch the full figure initially. By sketching the whole body and then cropping, you won't be susceptible to the issues that you might be unaware of. For example, her arms and hand are too large in this image.
Other problems were things like how the corset around her is a thicker material and wouldn't create such easy folds. Her head was squashed and very wide, which actually doesn't happen from a low angle like this. Her ears were attached to the back of her head. Her cheek is also misshapen, and her facial features were either misplaced, too large, or both. Her eyes needed a lot of changing, and it seems you didn't consider the planes of the face when drawing it. I've made them asymmetrical (one squinting a bit more than the other) to convey her expression better, and redrew and skewed the mouth to follow the planes of the face as well.

Here's a GIF of the process!
With the lighting, you didn't consider the difference of cast or form shadows. With thinner materials, more subsurface scattering will be visible. And to fill the scene more and convey the forms, ambient cool bottom light was added, as well as a top warm light. A rim light coming from the upper right was added as well.
I recommend reading Color and Light by James Gurney, and How To Render by Scott Robertson.
Always think of the forms in 3D, and if any part of the character would be in the way of light and cast a shadow on a different part of the body!

Hey thanks a lot for the pointers! I really appreciate the insight a lot!

Anatomy is 100% something I'm always studying to get better with, and you're spot on about the proportions. The initial thing was just a fan art sketch of the face that evolved a lot and ended up being really neat. A lot of my recent works have been really exploratory, and seeing how far I can push certain elements over the course of the picture but it really leaves some underlying fundamental issues that a couple of my friends have pointed to, and I'm not sure how to address that unless I restart the whole thing near the end with all the new things I've learnt.

My biggest source of inspiration for the style of these is karasu-chan (https://www.pixiv.net/en/users/17779015)), I really love their linework and emotion a lot, and I've been studying them *way* too much. They tend to stretch and squish their anatomy and faces in a way that works really well in a chaotic monster girl manga, but I think it's a bit harder to get away with some of the stylisation when I can't match their energy (which is something I am constantly trying to improve). For the ears, I tried to make it feel like she was pissed off and putting her ears down, but I certainly could have expressed it clearer.

Fabric stuff is something I haven't really studied yet, and it was mainly an exercise in designing a maid outfit, but I really like how you handled the shirt. It really feels like the black section is hugging and pulling the white part so tight! it's something I wanted to achieve, but I'm just not skilled enough with clothes yet.

Initially for the lighting I was just doing multiple very rough colour studies of some work Lack did, and for the final one I was incredibly sloppy with the lighting, since I really just wanted to see how that composition with the light on the hand would would look. It ended up looking really fantastic and I was inspired to add some mist around her to make her feel a bit more sinister, and I didn't plan on sharing it until some friends pushed me to post it.

I've since actually been asked by the dev of the game if they can put that pic in, so I tied it up for them and it's attached too, but generally light is something I'm really weak with, especially cast shadows and ambient lights. I usually give gurney's book a read every couple of months to brush up and learn more things, but It's been waaaay too long since I've read it now. I haven't read how to render yet, I'm not sure why. I'll have to give it a read!

Thanks again for taking the time to redraw it and providing perspective on areas I can improve! I really appreciate it a lot.

for the pose study stuff, I was treating it like I would figure or gesture drawing except the model was the character. I focussed on just capturing the movement of the pose while keeping an eye on overlapping forms and the relationships between different body parts. that's why I liked the calf foreshortening, it seems pretty bold to basically cover the entire lower leg with the thigh, but so long as you see the foot at the end it seems to read pretty well. kinda neat. I also tried to pick up on the little style quirks they do (like the little triangles for clothing folds).
the Walt Stanchfield life drawing book goes into this a lot, I found it really helpful when I read it a little while ago. it's much less analytical than Hampton or Loomis and talks a lot about 'feeling' and pushing the gesture of a pose.
