VolenCK being the prime example of a person who's put in the crazy amounts of hours of studies, and hasn't gotten anywhere good. At his best, his work looks like photos that he's badly photo bashed and painted a few strokes over, seems like a classic case of NGMI.

are some people doomed to always be bad at art no matter how hard they try? i'm getting the feeling that this spark nonsense is actually real

This, just draw coomshit or fanart, it’s equally as saturated, but you get money.

>> No.4898067

Volen's not actually in love with drawing or painting. He's just trying to be a concept artist.

>> No.4898071

To be fair he did improve, mostly just polished turds though, been following him for years, sometimes takes huge breaks from internet and social media just to focus on learning art. Asked him once why he had a hiatus and he said he's actually grinding on the daily.

>> No.4898092

Once you hit a plateau in your progress it is a better option to start finding your own voice and working on your style. His skillset is good enough to get paid but these studies are bringing him nowhere it's same lame tasteless shit.

You just keep doing it even if you're not as good as you want to be. Even if you never get as good as you want to be. Always thinking the next one will be "it." If you're not thinking about the next one - instead you're worrying whether a year from now you'll have just wasted your time - then maybe it's not for you. Maybe. Everybody's different so maybe I'm wrong, but I just can't imagine any artist thinking it's a waste of time.

Yes. No matter how much some here on /ic/ try to deny it or how many pros say "just draw", the reality is that many people will never even achieve mediocrity, let alone a solid grasp on art. Many will make excuses about not having the right materials, tools, or not enough time but look no further than Volen as the perfect example. He has tons of time and resources to become a concept artist. In fact, he saved up a bunch of cash and quit his job to dedicate himself to getting good. I have been very interested in his progress because I too once believed that anyone could get good if they did the art grind. Volen has done mentorships with pros and has access to all the educational resources he wants, yet he still makes these horrible photobashed images and paints over pics he dl's from NMA.

We are all different people and are not capable of doing the same things. Am I saying to give up and not bother trying to achieve mastery? No. Just saying it's wrong and pointless to deny reality.

I think it's a matter of taste. Anyone can acquire the skills given enough practice, but if you have shit taste you'll produce shit images. Volen is the textbook example of that

Also true

I'm only passingly familiar with VolenCK, but I think in essence the real problem is what >>4898067 and >>4898092 say. He grinded the skills, but didn't nurture his soul or creative spirit. He can paint just fine on a technical level, but his paintings are really about nothing and contain nothing, they are merely means to an end, they are only work.
While I am staunchly in favor of learning the fundies, this is the danger of only grinding them to "git gud" and nothing else. There was another artist that was the subject of a plagiarization thread recently who practically does nothing but rip off compositions and ideas from other artists, and even has the gall to blatantly paint over other artists' work. She(?) wasn't even a bad artist per se, but the terrible thing is that she got to that level only to not have anything in her heart and mind that was worth expressing in the first place. Which sounds super gay, but I feel that it's true nonetheless.

>but if you have shit taste you'll produce shit images
I dunno. Seems there's more to it than that, because I can't understand how that could happen with a guy like Volen. He literally studied with pros. Its like a dad showing his kid how to tie their shoes over and over, the kid practices every day but never does it correctly. Concept art is pretty formulaic. There dozens of established styles he could pick an follow. It's not like fine art where you're trying to create a new trend. How can you not get it when you have all the resources, pro help, and time you need?

>> No.4900217

Volens whole idea was to be a tutorial boy. He had no desire to make it.

Please stop reminding me Volen exists, it's incredibly depressing to think about.

I think you’re right on all that “soul” crap honestly. It’s definitely a real thing as corny as it sounds, and also Volen forced photobashing really hard when he was starting out. He’d been trying to take shortcuts and cut corners since day one, which makes me feel like he doesn’t give that much of a shit about his actual pieces outside of some vague ideal of “gitting gud.”

Don't know who this guy is, but here are some problems I see:

1. He doesn't even smile in his profile picture, he looks like an angry incel. Why would I want to hire sourpuss?

2. He's at the same time trying to post up tutorials / how good he is, and also puts HIMSELF down and says he needs to repaint something and how bad his stuff is. Wow your work is bad? Great salespitch.

3. His faces are melting.

4. His work looks cheap and photobashed, nothing wrong with photobashing, but good photobashing takes skill too. His stuff has a flat, graphic design feel. He's probably be better as a graphics designer than a photobasher.

I stopped 2 years ago and lost the passion. It wasn't really that bad, I just realized i didn't enjoy drawing that much. Only spent 6 months so it wasn't that bad. I dont really miss it and my studies of art have given me a deeper appreciation for actaully good art so I'm thankful for that. Now I just browse /ic/ and participate in /a/ drawthreads if I'm in the mood

The biggest problem really, is how he presents himself. He just comes off as someone you wouldn't want to be in the same room as, gloomy, doesn't believe in himself, self-deprecating.

There are worse artists out there with better personalities that will get hired.

I highly doubt it anon. When you start finding your own feet most people start developing soul. If you know what you want to show, even if it is a little flawed you can see it.

>Concept art is about ideas, and he just has none. Not say he's naturally uncreative
But he is though. When you listen to pros talking about how they got started they always mention drawing for fun or being inspired by a show or game they love. Yeah, they might've learned fundies in art school but they already had ideas before they got the skills. If a person can't think of stuff they want to draw, there's no point in trying to become an artist.
