IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud, Make yourself proud, you can make it if you believe in yourself.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

1.-screenshot the image and post that instead

2.-change camera capture settings to something smaller

3.-send to computer and resize in picresize.com

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Some ground rules to start this thread and the next /beg/ threads off:

>if you are /beg/
Don't ever give advice.
You can relate and share your hardships with other /beg/s, but never give them advice.
If you MUST give advice, start the reply off with "I'm beg, but what worked for me is..."

>Before you post your work
1. Every person giving advice here expects for you to have at least read some of the sticky, and that you already know what you should be doing to improve.
In that light, replies such as "grind more fundamentals" are perfectly viable advice.
We expect you to know what the general fundamentals are (gesture, anatomy, perspective, drapery, etc.), and we expect you to know where you can find resources to practice these subjects.
Sometimes literally the only good advice to give is to practice more and improve your technique.

2. DO NOT post your 5 minute sketches that you didn't put much thought into. If you do post them then make sure to ask for SPECIFIC advice on a specific subject.
If you post a doodle and ask "where did i go wrong" or "how should I continue from here", expect to get meme replies such as "Loomis".

Follow these simple rules and the generals will become much more productive for both the /beg/s and the people giving advice

/beg/s can absolutely provide useful criticism and advice to other /beg/s. Sometimes just having a second set of eyes is enough. All that's gonna do is kill the already sparse number of replies people get and make them less motivated to post work here. Tried some nostalgic cartoon characters and it felt good to just "finish" some simple characters.

Still getting used to a tablet and bad at drawing in general. Far from great, but compared to a lot of my other recent drawings I was a bit surprised even though they are obviously simple.

Think I should spend some more time practicing with western cartoons.

Using appropriate file sizes is helping us help you. By the way you STILL fucked it up. Learn to fucking crop, god DAMN. All you have to fucking do is select the area and click the "crop" button. It's not hard. Resizing is even fucking easier. Here, because you apparently can't figure this out for yourself, I did it for you.

More to do with newfags who blatantly ignore an earnest request in the OP (which shows that they have absolutely no interest in following advice given) then getting upset when someone points out that they should have done as requested and simply done something that takes maybe 5 seconds. And look at that, because you ignored that simple guildeline of resizing images to a reasonable size, the topic has been derailed! Good job, retard.

Anyway there's not much to say about your drawing. It's a copy of a VN CG.
I'd recommend not using Takeuchi's art (at least not his earlier work) as a studying tool. Why? Because it's generally quite flat. He's good at striking design, but makes little use of perspective and his anatomy is pretty much all symbols. Generally a poor learning tool for anything other than character design. Your line work is pretty weak but that comes with practice, so keep it up.

Smart way to draw from your imagination is to understand how the body bends and folds at each joint, then apply it from paper. You aren't learning by memorising exact poses. If it's all boring to you, quit.

Great start. Though to be honest the way the hair is drawn it's like it's designed for animation. I.e virtually flat, no shading. If someone tried to colour that for you they wouldn't know where to put what shadow not shade yet. It's also very balloony. I think with how it is, for a finished piece you will be better off leaving it cell shaded or adjust it as you will confuse yourself. You probably sweated over that lineart but if that's as good as it gets, then so be it.

I think critiquing /beg/ artists gets hard where they try to draw cellshade style cartoon people, and then try to paint it for hours like Michaelangelo. It just doesn't work.

push your values, particularly the lights

also take notice of the shapes that the values take. marco bucci has an awesome video about shape design

i'd recommend you use harder brushes, which means a brush with a bold edge, one that doesn't blend in with whatever's behind it. it forces you to think more carefully about the shapes you're using, which defines the planes that the image has, which is more convincingly 3D

Good job on getting most of the drawing correct you just need to work on the shape of the facial features to get the likeness down. Look at the left eye it is bigger then the right. Perspective on the hair and facial features doesn't match up. Shading on right side isn't consistent with left. Right eye is angled down too much compared to left. Hair goes behind right shoulder but is expected to come over left side given perspective.
You have some efficient lines and nice, simple highlight shapes. Overall it looks symbol drawn but with some knowledge of the curvature of the face. Sorry I can't redline it atm without a tablet.
I would do some studies of a skull at the same angle, simplifying the planes of the face as much as possible (think asaro head, look up some YT tuts) and then redrawing so you can apply what you've learnt. Don't be discouraged, it's a good thing to notice you're not as good as you want to be yet, accept we have to produce a lot of subpar crap before we make it.

What do you mean due to the pen?

If you have a tiny babby tablet it will just plain be harder.

I recommend trying some gesture drawings - they will be messy and shit but as you go you start to get better at identifying good, dynamic lines of action and it can help avoid the usual hesitant petting of lines that's common when you start out. It also helps you start making more confident strokes, which is challenging when you're uncertain of your hand-eye coordination.

Also if you can't use your shoulder at least try to use your elbow. Drawing with the wrist is only really useful for details.

The precisely vertical (parallel to picture plane) lines make the composition boring. To take it to the next level it needs to feel more realistic - look at photographs and you'll see the verticals are almost never parallel to the picture plane, they should be slightly diagonal. Also consider the amount of detail you want to put into the background when you colour it. The character is the focal point so you want her to pop more (ex make her more detailed) than the rest of the image.

The fish are too evenly spaced apart and never overlap or cluster. Normally fish swim in the same direction as a school? It'd definitely help to look at a bunch of reference first to get an idea of how you want the composition to look. Also the focal point is pretty weak. I think it's the biggest fish in the middle-right area, but it's not really interesting as a composition. I mean I get the idea that it's supposed to look like you're looking up from underwater, which would be cool, but the effect of the way you have the fish just speckled all over just makes it look a little too much like static on an old tv screen.

Ok so I tried re-drawing your art to figure out the problems. It looks like you drew from the comic but you changed the perspective and it messed you up. The original drawing's POV is from behind the dude and his face overlaps/obscures the view of the girl, but you changed it because you wanted to show the girl's face. This was a nice idea and I think you did good on her face, but it messed up the perspective since we're looking at the back of his head while seeing the side of her face. It doesn't work if they're both supposed to be facing each other. To fix this I tried finding a new reference picture of people kissing where the camera is still kind of behind the guy but shows enough of the side profile of each of the characters so you can actually see their faces for the kiss. I downplayed the weird tentacle-looking scarf because it was really distracting in your drawing, and I tried understanding how the original image draws the guy's hand to fix it a bit. I think maybe you ended up rendering your drawing before having a solid foundation, and it made things a little ugly, like a polished turd. I mean the rendering is really not bad though. I'd also say focus on consistent lighting, since the dude's sleeve is like glowing with light but her red scarf is more dull. Idk anyway hope that helps.

Painting takes a lot more practice and planning than drawing. It's better to learn to draw and construct first before trying to learn how to colour mix and paint. I mean you can start painting more if you want to get better at aspects of painting, but also do the drawing and fundamentals learning first.

Hello. Most of my art is rather cartoony as that's how I started drawing. I never learned to draw in the traditional sense (starting with drawing realistic people then working down into a stylized art style) and its heavily affecting my proportions. I want to improve my art and I'd like to know if I should simply try to just better my proportions in my current style or start from scratch and begin focusing on drawing more realistic humans and work my way back. Here is some of my stuff for reference.

Its to help you with weight distribution, finding the balance point, and conveying action. Cartoonists take the line of action and they exaggerate it to make extreme poses. It doesn't have anything to do with rendering and its got little to do with construction.

I think drawing in colour to start with is where you went wrong. When you start like that you force yourself to think about too many things at once (composition, colour, form, gesture, value, texture, etc). You would make it easier on yourself to work sequentially, first by figuring out the composition, gesture, and form through sketching first, and then adding value, local colour, texture, and lighting. DESU if I were you I'd try restarting from the beginning to maximize and figure out your lines the best way possible. When you get to the colour, use a palette of colours that already look good together. Sometimes I'll take colours directly from a photograph or painting I like. Anyway idk just have fun. I hope that helps.

Should I have a good grasp on perspective / 3D shapes before I even bother with something like gesture or is it more sensible to just kinda learn both at the same time?

For example I was reading Hampton "Design and Invention" and thought it was interesting and easy to follow, but I wasn't sure how well I was supposed to be able to "draw along". I felt I could draw the spinal curves and whatnot but they often ended up in identical perspective and stuff like blocks meant to simulate shapes like the hip area didn't come out right at all.
... I am really tired of drawing basic shapes and perspective and I don't feel like I'm improving at them either. I want to be able to draw people at least, however bad, so I wanted to at least take a peak into gesture for once. I feel some sort of decision paralysis and have reverted to copying art for now.
