IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

POST DRAWINGS YOU NEED HELP WITH

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

1.-screenshot the image and post that instead

2.-change camera capture settings to something smaller

3.-send to computer and resize in picresize.com

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

Take your time, you can do it.

You can't construct properly yet. Focus on doing geometric mannequin figures. Look up Proko's mannequinization video and do that. Or copy other drawings to get a feel for proper form. Michelangelo, Pontormo, other old renaissacne artists used forms in clear and obvious ways so that's a possible way to study too.

Anon, try being really strict with yourself with form. Make sure everything you draw literally is either a sphere, cube, or cylinder, or sections of them mashed together. A roll of fat is really just a cylinder. Be really precise and give each form the respect and attention it deserves. Each quad muscle should be as carefully conceived of and fit into the whole as the whole tube of the thigh, and each nodule in the knee should be as carefully conceived as the sphere for the head. Fit everything together with precision, like an engineer. You can be loose at first, but you have to work over it with "completeness". Otherwise you'll never be able to render it.

If you’re having trouble copying a body from photo reference, you should trace over the body just to help you visualize the shape of her, try marking anatomy land marks like her collarbone and such, then go back to your drawing and see how it differs
You can also draw over and deconstruct her body like how her rib cage would be in a simple shape and apply that to your drawing to learn, I recommend proko videos to get a start on learning these things and draw along with the videos

Just so you have a better understanding of why he's holding the pencil like that, he's probably drawing on a large newsprint pad that's being held up vertically. It's way easier to move around the page with your shoulder, tilting the pencil adds a variety of edge types and line widths, but that's all pretty irrelevant to the actual fundamentals that are being covered here which can be translated to any setting.

I get the feeling I can draw cooler things when using the pencil tool.
Ironically I was annoyed at first, I'm sorta forced to use pencil tool because people at the group I post to apparently HATE digital art. I've seen amazing things posted there but they get ignored in favor of realistic pencil portrait #842 or even crappy traditional drawings with a pencil on the table.

People really over-value trad so I'm trying to imitate it. Maybe I can sneak in a paper texture underneath

>> No.4953982

Just fake it, trad is kinda stupid. Make your digidrawings absolutely huge and then downscale and add paper texture for realism. Print it off if you have to. The only reason it’s really “easier” is convenience. Undos, perfect eraser. You’d have to be retarded not to use it. By all means keep a real sketchbook for fun but don’t let tradfags drag you down. Successful people use all the tools available to them. The only thing I’d say is that real paintings have a different quality to them but even in that case you could still make all your line art digitally like a sane person

I don't feel like Keys to Drawing alone gives you a good idea of what gesture is or what it's good for. The Vilppu method of gesture is the first step in learning to construct the figure, so if your goal is to draw from imagination, then you will learn much, much more by doing it his way. I personally wish I'd moved on to him much sooner than I did. If you're having fun with "instinctual" gesture (and I think it's good to have a mix of instinctual and analytical approaches), then perhaps go full Nicolaides and scribble like a madman.

I can't speak for your level, but the thing to remember is that gesture is not just something you either succeed or fail at. It's a learning tool. It can be hard to "capture the action" if you're not sure what the figure is doing in the first place. But gesture is not just about getting down what you already know, it's about figuring things out and recording your observations.

Part of what Vilppu teaches you is what you should look for. Say for instance you're just starting and he talks about how when the body "stretches" one way, it "compresses" in the other. From then on you will look for examples of this when you do gesture. Even if you're not sure how to convey this information in your drawing, the fact that you were looking for it means that you've added it to your pool of knowledge. Your ability to understand what you see and your ability to put down what you understand improve in tandem. (The same applies to Nicolaides, except he places the emphasis on "experiencing" rather than observing.)

In short, my advice is don't feel like you need to "get it right" to learn. Just take what you can, and apply it. If you feel like you aren't getting it, you can always revisit it later.

Understandable. Go to a random art prompt or character generator and do that shit. Get out of your comfort zone or youll never grow. Do you want to draw floating heads forever?

>any time I try to draw anything else it looks so bad that i feel embarrassed and don't want to try that any more :/
Thats retarded. If you cant get over being embarrassed about being bad at something while youre obviously learning it, I dont know what to tell you man. Grow a thicker skin. Honestly I think I got a lot out of it, it builds up a process that's pretty useful, a good mix of fundies and tips and tricks. I don't have a definite answer, but I'd say most prints are about the size of an average monitor. If there's no pixilation at around 2000x2000 you're probably good. Even then, you'd have to be pretty close to the print in order to see it.

Not really, its more about learning something from that. You can kinda master drawing what you see, but if you want to draw some stuff from imagination its not gonna help much.
The thing about drawing from ref is to deconstruct things and analyze them.
Like in that knight helmet you can try to find light sources, think how light bounces from surface, why it goes darker in some areas, how color temperature changes etc.

Darker shadows in the farthest points from light. That building should be darker and almost black. Sky should be a lot blacker unless it is dusk and it just got dark out. Hair highlights bug me. Hair should have separate lines at highlight even if they are fat chunky ones to match the cartoonish art style. Good for you for getting so far with making your webcomic. Personally I cheat with making something at night and do the proper colors and then cover everything with a top layer of dark pale blueish gray with like 70% or lighter opacity. Then erase over bright spots where light hits. Pic related is a example of how I cheated to make it darker without trying to figure out the perfect colors that match what they would be in the darkness.
