I prefer organization over chaos, simply because I'll have trouble getting the right color if it's all jumbled together instead of being organized by color. PSA Van Gogh was not just a lazy painter, he was an abstract designer. His shapes are appealing and genuinely beautiful to look at. If you're working towards abstraction in your art be sure to learn composition, color theory, and design!

yoooo I love what you did with the King of Red Lions... He looks like he fits right in with the Wind Waker style!

For critique, I would say that the shapes in the ocean seem disconnected from their actual curves (as in it feels like a 2D image instead of a 3D moving ocean) Also there's a lot of white space where you could have fun drawing a sky or background.

Overall I like it! Just if you want to use it for a portfolio or something I'd recommend filling in the rest.

>> No.5001297

I just started with oils, and I really like it. One issue is that my apartment is dark, so it's difficult to get a good lighting setup. Right now I'm using a normal desktop light and aiming it at the canvas. The problem is that it's difficult to get values right, the painting looks ok when the light is turned on but then I turn it off and the painting has super dark values. I think I need to get a new light that is better suited for painting, but I'm not sure what to look for. Any ideas?

>> No.5001302

>>5001297
Yeah, you don't aim light onto a canvas. That's why plein air painters take umbrellas, it's not to keep the sun off their skin! The light goes on the palette and the subject.
I use an ordinary table lamp with a daylight lamp in it, and an artists clamp light to angle over my pochade box when I'm painting at home. Thas has a daylight tube light in it.

fucking watercolor
>add water to thin paints

I use 25% cotton paper and it still warps like hell. 100% cotton paper is 6€/A3, I can't afford that shit, especially since I'm new to watercolor and make many mistakes.

Paper pads in small sizes (like A5), where the sheets are glued in the edges, work decently for me, even if I use quite a lot of water. It still warps a little bit, so the paper becomes a bit U-shaped, but it's not too bad. I bought some 600 g/m2 paper sheets recently, which seem nice, but I haven't tried them out yet.

For bigger watercolor works I think you need to do it properly, with drenching the entire paper in water and then stretch it on a frame with tape and staples. I don't have the tools for that, which sucks since I really would like to try bigger sized paintings.

Way too much detail, it seems simple but learning to leave a stroke alone and taking a step back from a painting is a big skill.

Any watercolor experts here? How should you approach painting something like these trees?
Do you do it all on one wet on wet layer, putting down colors and values on top of wet paper, or by layering down wet on dry layers, building up the color and values?

The problem with first one is that it's hard to get those "sharp" leaf edges when working with so much water, and the problem with layering is that every coat must be perfectly placed and right value and color or otherwise you end up with flat muddy mess.

>> No.5010458

>>5010304
The leaf area value is one value group, so I would approach it by painting the sky area first, then when dry painting the tree and variating the colour- but keeping the value the same.

Further, I can recommend Ian Sidaway if you want to build in layers and have sharp edges. His work is very graphic, but it is TIME CONSUMING.

I'm looking into getting an easel that I can use both at home and for outside painting. Right now I'm using a music stand when I paint at home, which isn't ideal. This is what my local shop offers, and it seems very limited to me as it doesn't hold the palette or anything.

I think the models using camera tripods seems best suited to me, like the ones by Coulter, Daytripper, and maybe Sienna. And out of those the one I linked earlier by En plein air pro seems most convenient as the tripod is included in the package. The price (>300$ plus shipping) is hefty, but if I use it both at home and outside it sort of seems worth it. I'm still not sure, there is a jungle of options out there.

Mont Marte Acrylic Paint Set 24 Colors 36ml
5 stars still after thousands of reviews. Its usually on top 10 lists in searches. Do I need 24 colors or should I just get a smaller set with prim colors and black and white?

Brushes - was just going to get some cheap ones starting out. Like a $10 pack.

Canvas - should I get these or can I paint on Bristol board/mixed media paper? Is there a cheap alternative to buying the pre-made canvases over and over? Was going to do the tiny canvases starting out to learn if thats only option.

To go with this, I have a artist desk with adjustable angle. Can I just use that for easel or should I get the table easel or cheap plastic $30 stand up easel?

Finally, is some ohuhu type starter kit the better way to get started? Like 20 paint, bag brushes, random canvases, etc for $50 or so?

I've been doing pet drawings in oil drybrush. It seems to be kind of an unknown technique, I've seen a Russian artist on Youtube and a few others do it. You use just a little bit of thinned oil paint and a worn brush to scumble on the paper.

>>5017868
I love the color scheme and texture on this!

>>5012851
Chows? Those are nice! I'm the chicken-anon, I use a Micron brush or graphic tip pen or Pitt pen with watercolor, they're waterproof when dry. IMO fur is hard to texture with watercolor so I used pen for that, like where you've used pencil.

>>5023874
Nice doggos, and the technique seems to work very well for fur. Are they painted on paper? I'm new to oils so I don't know which surfaces are good for painting on, other than canvas and board.
I painted the sharpener btw, thanks!

Amazing!
As the other anon says are they on paper, have you tried it on on another surface yet, or can you only do it on paper?
Looks like watercolour paper, so surely that isn't archival unless gessoed?

Any connoisseurs in this thread? I got this old painting my mom found laying in a pile of trash in the streets years ago. According to the plate it was made by Ambroise Louis Garneray, it's probably a reproduction but I can't find this painting among most of the websites listing his works

I use Arches oil paper since it's treated for oil painting. The traditional method uses any heavy paper and mineral oil or sewing machine oil for thinning, but that seemed concerning from a durability standpoint, so I found the oil paper and thin the paint with a bit of Liquin fine detail + gamsol which has a close consistency to light oil. I think gessoed hardboard would also be good for smoother subjects.

It's fine. Oils are just the same pigments as other mediums, mixed with oils that not an issue, such as linseed or walnut, people eat these FGS.
It's the CLEANING products used for thinning the paint if required, and brushes, which can be a problem. I use turps and never have an issue, even though some here think it's the Devil's own something something.
Crack your window open, and use a pot of oil to keep your brushes in if you want. Then wash them in mineral spirits one a weeks and rinse with some soap. That's if it really bothers you.
Me, I work in a small room and just don't use much of the turps at all. Then keep it in a sealed pot when not in use. Simple.

Not necessarily, i use empty glass jars that held vegetables and such before, work just as well. I have one with gamsol to thin my initial layers, and one with gamsol for cleaning my brushes. I let the latter sit undisturbed for a while so all the crud sinks in and then I pour the cleared gamsol over to a clean jar and get rid of the dirty one. I find this method much easier and cost effective than having one of those containers.

there are too many ways to count, it's what you think is important. do studies of many different trees and approaches to figure it out. i would lay in the sky first (possibly with a yellow underneath), then do wet on dry and carve the shapes in making sure to leave room for the lit leaves.

in the image attached, there aren't that many colors. you'd want to work from the red/orange at the top to a sap green or yellow green, to a blue green at the bottom for the shadow brush/trees. i'd probably do at least one to two wet on dry, wet in wet mixes charging color to get variety. try to work out the color shifts and composition you want beforehand. everything is very midrange in the whole image so you'll have to editorialize more shadows and contrast.
