I was focusing on shapes when doing the hair but I think it ended up feeling too flat compared to the rest of the image. Also I feel like something is missing in this painting but I don't know what. Would love some critiques.

>> No.5109876

>>5109864
The whole thing feels flat because none of it indicates perspective or depth, and your pillow-shading isn't doing you any favors. First, you have really strong contrast on your background, and in theory the shapes COULD indicate perspective, but there's no change in value or brightness to help with that, they're flat the whole way down. On top of that, even though abstract, the background seems to imply a vanishing point near the center, though nothing is really aligned to it, and the figure itself isn't connected to that perspective. You'd achieve a lot more depth by grounding your figure with a strong perspective and then placing your environment on the same grid, and THEN distorting it, rather than the other way around.

Outside of that, the whole pose is very odd. Her hair is flying up as if she's falling, but her legs are crossed tightly which feels like she's sitting. This is possibly because you did the Superman thing and referenced a sitting pose. It gives the whole pose a lack of weight and momentum. Plus the clothing like the skirt is tight to the body and not indicating any consistent direction of movement.

As for the lighting, it's unclear where and what light is filling the scene. The shadow indicates a light above the figure, though are the squares "emissive"? Do they fill the scene with ambient blue light? It's not reflected in the shading if so. Either way, the strong directional light isn't consistent throughout, you seem to be just shading where you think shadows go in lower areas, rather than treating light as directional. Pick a direction, apply strong and uniform shadows opposite that, and then add ambient bounce-light into the shadows if there is any.

Thank you for the thorough critique. I figured the reason why it felt flat was because of the lighting and overall rendering. I did use multiple references for the pose, but none of the were sitting, one of them was standing up with extreme perspective though. It was pretty hard to find a decent reference of someone falling, could you help me figure out how I could make this have more weight and momentum like you said?

Your line are all very hard, while your shading is all very soft, and doesn't seem to correspond consistently to the forms suggested by the lines. It leaves the picture feeling disjointed and unfinished.

Particularly, the door and doorframe have a bunch of lines that look like parts should be raised or recessed, but the shading doesn't do anything to suggest that. Line work and color/shading have to complement one another.

That torso is Loooooong. I think it should look something like this but I'm no expert. If this is the best construction you can do, maybe you could look at doing some 3D ref stuff in Daz or DesignDoll. I bet you could also find something like this in some superhero comic covers too... How do you guys go about adding texture to your piece after values or color is done? I wanted to make my art look more like it was an oil painting, but not sure what I can do to make it emulate that besides a messy texture atop an overlay/multiply layer.

>> No.5118519

>>5118420
Digital art will never look truly authentic. That being said, you can breathe a lot of life into your digital work by emulating the workflow rather than the look.

>Paint everything on a single layer.
>Think about your edges. Don't use the lasso tool, don't use the basic soft round.
>Simplify and unify your color palette.
>Think about color temperature.
>Use a limited color palette.
>Don't try to over-control your painting. Introduce a degree of randomness and jitter. Be subtle about it.
>Don't colorpick. Don't even colorpick from the colors you've already laid down within your own painting.
>Pick colors that are more saturated than you think they should be, and dial them back gradually.
>Don't dull your colors with grey, dull them with complimentary hues.
>Build texture through brushwork. Brush texture is optional, and up to personal taste. Avoid pattern repetition like the plague. Shape variety is critical.
>Decide on 1-3 very clear focal points in your composition, and render those parts with more care and attention in order of focal importance. Depending on what style of painting you want to emulate, tighten up your rendering closer to the center of the painting, and abstract your brushwork the closer you get to the borders.
>Paint with a large brush. Stick to 3-5 standard brush sizes, and work within the confines those provide. Work from biggest to smallest.
>And obviously, don't undo. Like, ever. Live with your mistakes, or work over them. If you're accident-prone, build a foundation in drawing. Drawing skills synergize with your painting ability, so you should do that anyway.
>Now that you don't undo, you're going to want to delve into proper planning so you can actually get some work done. The idea of doing preliminary sketches and thumbnails will become notably appealing to you. Remember to slow down and use your head. You'll build speed and confidence with repetition.

That's about it. Hope it helps.

○ add highlights in the eyes, or they look lifeless

○ think about what's farther in the environment, the tiles in front should be bigger because they're closer

○ ear is a bit too close, use construction (check loomis) to place ear correctly.

The perspective on this is off in such an odd way. We're seeing the top of her hair and the bottom of her feet at the same time. It's cubism.

Even at the shoulders, we can see the top of the epaulets/loop thing and the top edge of the collar.

>> No.5122035

Well, her head is tilted towards the viewer a bit, and the upmost plane that we see on her hair is not the top but the edge of the top of the hair. Back of the collar is also tilted. Okay I'll stop making excuses for my self now

I sligtly feel like you went into detailing a bit too fast
Te style is very cool and gives off that tabletop vibe but there are still design and color decisions to be made but you already finished rendering of the faces and some on the demon
I guess it depends on the workflow but I personally always regret getting into detailing too fast

I recently got back into art, I am out of job thanks to covid and have a lot of time now.
Found this old painting I never finished even though I tried to finish it twice like two years ago or something.
Just wondering if you guys think it might be salvagable, I sort of like the texture and folds on the face, or should I abandon it because no one cares about capeshit anymore.

perspective of the feet suggests that her body should go deeper into the painting, at a very steep angle, above the boots her legs essentially break (especially her left (right from our view)) after that point the body is mostly consistent with only a slight perspective shift with a far lesser angle and then once again you cheat using the scarf/clothes and her head becomes arbitrarily placed
Your rendering and overal style are really cool but I suggest you fix her feet and head considering that you've already rendered a lot of the body, make it a bit less of a steep angle
I don't have wacom here so I tried to edit your painting a bit with shitty old PS and lasoo tool, hope it is more clear this way

Probably. I only have a few days to work on these and since these are basically the first actual paintings (digital or otherwise) I've really done, I don't have a set process or workflow established. I'm specifically trying to sidestep my normal method of drawing which is just "lots and lots and lots of construction with a pencil" and work more directly in color.

But fuck if I know how skilled illustrators pick color palettes for their pictures. I've never found any real information on the topic.

I am very biased but I suggest you look at workflow videos of Peleng (Sergei Kolesov)
He is a master at the kind of digital art he does and he seamlessly creates volume and composition basically without any drawing
His style is different from yours but it might be helpful
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsnfrsXSdNc&t=3s
Also I suggest you take a look at artists like Slawek Fedorczuk and Jeremy Fenske if you want to look at very good workflow imho, very stricting going from blocking to detailing without any dirt inbetween

That neck is a little thick for that body, but also the size of the trapezius seems to be making it look bigger than it should be. Generally on women the traps are much smaller and connect lower than on men. I also think the figure is a little off balance, those feet are pretty far in front of the figure's center of mass. If a humanoid is going to try and stand on extended stilts that contact the ground that far forwards, they would need to lean their upper body forwards.

You don't understand the logic behind the anatomy of digitigrade legs. I hope of related makes it more clear, digitigrade legs aren't actually adding an additional joint, at least not in the way you imagine it, everything that comes after the second bend is actually a giant foot and all digitigrade creatures are standing on their tippy toes basically. Stand on your tippy toes, now imagine that the distance between your heel and your toes would increase to make the foot longer, that's what is going on actually.
