thanks anon that's very kind, I think I say that because I don't have much experience with stylization or furry art. And it looks like literally everyone has slightly different construction methods for 'furry heads'- some are based on human skulls, some purely animal, some in between and amongst all that is the choices of stylisation. I'll probably get used to it but it feels like balancing a lot more spinning plates when compared to just drawing humans. Plus I seem to have trouble believing in my own designs

ah I suppose it's becoming self evident now that the construction methods change based on the design and purpose of the character.
But people like Darkgem, Logan Preshaw or Taran Fiddler seem to be able to know exactly where to put the boundary.
Again it seems like spinning plates to be able to create a fun design out of mixing a human and animal and I seem to have particular difficulty meshing the muzzle size and form with my ingrained idea of human face proportions.
fuck sorry for the paragraphs of shit no one cares about

>> No.5207980

>>5207958
It is very clear the human features in your work friend. The brow and eyes are distictly human. And perhaps that is where your problem lies? Perhaps, instead of adding animalistic features to a human, rather add human features to an animal. Of the inspirational art that you posted, aside from the dragon with the nose ring, I see the subjects to be more directly animal with just slight human features. Yours on the other hand, while drawn very well, id recon to appear to be a human with a fox mask on. I would suggest instead to draw a fox head and then move on to the other features?

>> No.5207991

>>5207980
haha I agree completely about the fox mask thing and you might've solved my problem entirely. Humans are so ingrained in me, but yeah I was going for something like bottom right, but maybe that isn't the way to go? it's all very confusing but thank you anon at the very least I have something to investigate

I am struggling with art yet again. I definitely feel like I belong on the NGMI table most of the time away from all the GMI chads.

I keep on psychologically bouncing between "I need to fucking ground 8 hours a day drawing boxes in perspective" to "Nothing matters, ill never be good so I might as well just draw bad art my whole life and try to have fun"

>> No.5210633

>>5210499
it makes me really sad to hear that man, if you want to get into the whole 8 hours of practice a day stuff it's a lot easier if you enjoy it first. It doesn't even have to be 8 hours or whatever, ease yourself into it. What would be a fun way to study form? do you like animals? do you have a pet you could draw? It's such a life hack if you draw something where you'll enjoy the outcome regardless of the quality. Like for example copying your favourite artist's work 1 to 1 was a good way I found that warmed me up to the idea of drawing a lot more.
I see from your image that you might be having trouble with pen pressure, or even the way you draw on your tablet, maybe drawing some things with pencil and sketchbook could be fun.

Seriously having fun WHILST learning should be a higher priority than the learning if you are feeling bad about it all. I hope I'm not talking out my arse here but I have felt your pain. Plus drawing boxes can be a trap where you do it forever without applying the knowledge. Love you anon I see a lot of soul in that image

in many ways you're on the right track, I think I make the same mistake often with the ears/eyes snout. for ex; look at the char's right eye - it's almost the same in both, even though the char has moved quite a bit. there's no shame in posing this https://x6ud.github.io/#/ tool to the direction of the head you're trying to create. I think then you'd see how exaggerated both angles are in a somewhat unbelievable way. GL

I used to do this too, desu anon its kind of hard to make this kind of angle look natural if you are using boxes and squares. Yes it defines the perspective very well, but you arent drawing the assymetrical forms of the body within these squares. Remember, squares and rectangles are for perspective, but they do not make out the actual forms. For that, you have to study the bones and muscles of the body, most importantly their structure. and dont forget the gesture. If theres no gesture, forget it.

Still, overall, I have high hopes for you. I like your overall style. keep fucking going. Make those lines less hairy.

Oh and keep grinding perspective, no matter what while you do anatomy, follow this advice:

When I first started drawing these Anthro gals I had those whole porno lore about how they were slaves to adolescent boys. You know, when it’s not bad enough that you’re a filthy enough excuse for a human being that you like straight shota you decide to double down and combine it with furry. I never really drew much with the boys, though, but they’ve stuck around in my mind. Just can’t bring myself to draw them banging the gals. Figure the FBI will me down.

not him but if you wanna draw from imagination you should be drawing from reference like half the time AT LEAST.
Learn to construct from reference using these primitive forms, boxes, spheres, they all can make up the head of an animal.

Mindless grinding won't work too because you won't pay attention to it, you'll love learning if you apply those skills in a way that would appeal to you. How does one get better? If “just draw” is supposed to be a crab meme then what have I done? I never grinder fundies or read Loomis and I still rarely use references. I’m not even sure I do construction. To me, it’s mutually exclusive with “feeling the form.”

Where did you get the idea that was a crab meme? It's just mostly intended for people that never actually start drawing so all they do is complain and never improve, with that said you can definitely get better by just winging it but also will likely do it slightly slower than somebody that's using references and actively practicing a skill in a clear direction.

It alleviates the pressure that comes with drawing and motivates you to draw more. You'll definitely reach the 1000 hour mark if you do.

If you're around weaker artists, then they'll be impressed. IF you're around stronger artists, you can ask them for advice. If you're around artists with the same level, then it'll be like a competition.

I'll give you some advice. Check out Michael Hampton's book. He starts off with gestural drawings and shows you how to build up your anatomy around those gestures, so you don't get stuck trying to fix your anatomy while still figuring out the pose of the character.

I've been trying to learn to draw on and off again for several years and I don't feel like I've learned anything whenever I try. A friend told me to just start with Fun With a Pencil but I've been doing the first few exercises and it doesn't feel like I'm doing anything right. Every time I look at anything I produce, it just looks like shit and I don't know what to do. It also feels like I get the same meaningless platitudes over and over. "Just draw. Just stick with it. Just learn anatomy." None of this really means anything to me and I wind up losing motivation to where I drop it, only to try yet again in vain some time later.

"just draw" is a meme in the sense that if all you do is draw without guidance or recognizing your faults and learning where to improve, your skills will only improve at a very slow rate.

If you want to actively become better you have to actively study, just like any other applied skill. You say you don't grind fundamentals or use references or construction, well maybe it's time you started.

Is there some kind of schedule or routine I should stick to? How long should I spend time with these books? There's so much information on which books to use but it's overwhelming. I don't know which book is best to use to start. I have both the Betty Edwards and Bert Dodson books, along with at least two of the Loomis ones. There's other people saying to work on fundamentals and still others saying, "Focus on one particular thing you want to draw, then study everything related to it." There's too much to where I start doing one thing, then get discouraged because it feels like I didn't start with the right thing. I get the same platitudes from everyone and it all feels so futile. It's barely been a weekend and I'm already thinking about giving up again.

The process is different for everyone so you’ll get a lot of conflicting answers. I didn’t read any art books until I had already had some success learning to draw on my own. What worked for me was looking at reference and trying to do my own thing with it. Drawing faces at different angles, flipping the image, etc. trying to understand the 3d forms is by far the most important part of learning to draw in my opinion

I'm sorry but it's feeling increasingly hopeless. This feels like another "you just have to do X" platitude to me. I have no confidence and I know that everything I do ultimately winds up in failure. I have no structure or real guidance to look to. I've been considering taking drawing lessons but I have no fucking clue if it's worth it. A guy I talk to about computer shit with tried helping but it didn't feel like it did anything. I know I'm going to fail because this has happened multiple times before. I tell myself I'm going to learn to draw, I give it a shot for a week or a month or so, I see no improvement, I get discouraged, and finally give up before attempting it all over again either several months or even years later. I'm almost thirty and it feels like I've learned nothing in all this time. The constant failure with no improvement has cemented the idea in my head and I question why I bother. The desire is there, but I don't have the ability nor the mentality. Telling me to fix the latter doesn't do anything for me.

If you're not learning anything then lack of motivation is only natural I guess.
If you look at everything you do and dismiss it as shit then you're not applying new knowledge to it, everything is stagnant when you feel like that.
An online course/ even a video course like on New Masters Academy (there's a free trial) can be very helpful when you feel helpless and nothing's working, because it gives you tasks to perform and you get to see in real time the methodology of the artist whilst (s)he's drawing.

I recommend to you to just relax for the moment. Commit to long term drawing if you want results, they won't come in days or weeks. Calm your worries about not being good by figuring out a specific simple thing and doing it, like freehand boxes.

As long as you keep studying and practicing, you'll get better. You probably won't notice at first because the transition will be over a long time. But when you begin to compare your current work to what you were doing a year or two years ago (or even as soon as a couple of months ago if you practice really hard) you will start to see the improvements you've made and it's one hell of a motivator.

>How do you not look at everything you do and just dismiss it as shit?
Almost every time I finish a piece, the next day I look at it and tell myself "Man this sucks" or "I could do better". I think it's a common thing for a lot of artists, but what's important is recognizing the flaws and understanding what you could do to improve that pic. Just don't get stuck trying to refine it forever, move onto the next pic instead. Take every criticism and put it in your pocket for next time.

I actually really this! I don’t know what you were going for, but it gives me a crusty transgressive art feel. Like pic related.

What types of furries would be best for a shy BBW nerd girl?

How do I bring myself to post my furry art here? I love these threads and want to participate but Im ashamed to show the crap I make. Everyone is so full of ideas here, I dont know how you do it.

I assume you mean kemo shota, not chibi as that is a different thing, but in any case my advice is the same, don't just copy drawings like your pic related unless you pretend to draw them always stiff, copy every drawing where those proportions are featured even if they have weird and complex angles, what you want is your brain to become so familiar with the subject that you will end up internalizing those proportions without even realizing it and be able to recall them later on your own works, understand them.

Jesus bro, how did you make the background like that? How did you make simplify those computer elements, as in the actual UI on the screens. This is really good.

ill be honest, its mostly just tracing over screenshots i took of discord/ableton and pictures from google
the camera was cross referenced with another drawing of mine and the guitar is trace over of my guitar i took to match the angle
hopefully that doesnt ruin your opinion on the piece too much

So let's say that I posted a thing to FA and left it up for about 18 hours before realizing there was a major problem with it and deleted it. How long should I wait before reuploading it to avoid incurring the wrath of the jannies? I've heard that they're pretty banhappy over there.

You could just click update source file and reupload the image. No need to delete it.

>> No.5230258

>>5230252
Normally that's what I'd do, but it wasn't a problem that I could fix in a super short amount of time and the guy I did it for is pretty autistic about staying on model. It's gonna take at least a day to fix, so I just wanna make sure that I'm not breaking any super secret upload policy rules or anything.

>> No.5230273

>>5230258
As far as I know, I don't think that's gonna break any rules. There only seems to be restrictions on YCH reminders and duplicates
