I'm not using other socials for art so it doesn't apply to me, at least right now. i've noticed it's something a lot of artists talk about for their intro courses to digital painting, etc. sinix has a video on it where he talks about this, airi pan in her course starts with just blocking in 3 values from movie stills/master studies, and craig mullins essentially talks about the same thing; I think he extra thing he mentions that's kind of more advanced is the comic book style hatching where even though they're just using two values they create the illusion of a 3rd value with the hatching method.
it's really about making decisions, if you're going to focus on local value of objects/materials or shadow value. sorry for the ramble but that's what I think it's about
