I'm giving it serious thought. I'm looking at the 4chan global rules right now and the DMCA policy, although I doubt some random twitter artist I've never heard of actually has a copyright on a generic-punk-girl design (and I see porn of copyrighted characters posted all the time on other boards).

My real problem is with the user base of /ic/. No artist is ever truly anonymous. People will recognize your work and harass you for doing something they personally find despicable. Is it really worth getting potentially vacationed and/or constantly flamed by angry fanboys just to rule34 a self-insert character? Since it is meant to be a representation of a real person could it even constitute legitimate sexual harassment?

If you argue about the fact we all take something from us to put it on our creations, you'd be correct, but I believe self inserting goes beyond that idea. Making a self insert character is essentially making a caricature of your own traits for the sake of explicitly represent yourself in a medium; not always you explicitly represent yourself in the works you do.

Just doing that won't make the character, there is still a lot of work to do and people forget that often these days.
I feel more into trait based creation because I don't feel like taking ideas from somewhere else.(somehow feels more creative, though it's not) It's within me already so it's mine. Be it a vector of emotion(not every anger feels the same, same for everything in the resulting list, and so on), element of a physical appearance or just a thing that happens to me.(like a simple character I made by adding up everything that happened one annoying day and then reiterating the idea a few times, then some refining until I was satisfied) It's also easier to stay engaged in detailing them out because it's got one thing I can relate with.

I'm trying to get able to create characters in similar way the engineers do their projects. It requires massive knowledge and understanding of human actions/nature. I want to be able to fluently take a set of my requirements and engineer a set of solutions that work for entertainment and expectations of my viewers the way I want it to from "the rawest ingredients". There still would be place for all other ways but this one is the one I want to master eventually. Mastery of all and using them together might be even better, who knows. I will, at one point.(yes I'm looking at it technically but I also put my heart into it, I too want to feel the design)

My design goals are directly against both what is happening right now and my natural way of designing.(that is inspiration from myself)

I have lately invented a rule for myself that I try to enforce and by that test it.

It's a little absurd but I think it sets me right to make my characters more realistic.(wanted to say complex but it's not more complex per se) And 7 short stories is not that much if you don't need to prep it for other people to see.(I'm fine with a rough draft) Number can be lowered up to your liking/needs if you want to try too. Also depends on your skill and requirements in story-writing.(which I'm also bad at, but it boosts both skills so still worth it)

Agreed, it's not about taking elements and just mismashing them together in hope it goes somewhere, it's about carefully building the character from the elements as their basics and look at ways to bend them into something more unique, as well harmonious.

I see where this comes from, and I say it's a well-founded discomfort. I dont mind simplistic character design choices, but they surely arent very powerful for storytelling and it shows, which blows when it's the only thing you see nowadays.

Now this is neat, I like the idea, I'll make sure to put that into practice. Though I find seven to be a bit of an overkill, I'd say five is more suitable; then again I guess it depends on how much complexity you want on your characters, hence why you would be flexible on the number.

Say, you and I have some similarities on character designing and storytelling choices. Granted, mine is a bit more laid back and admittedly simplistic, but I also stick to the idea that elements should be something to expand upon and not just mindlessly mixed together and that a character should be as complete as a system, making character designing more like problem-solving applied to storytelling, having a solution for every kind of situation depending on the character's nature and not relying upon "template responses".

I really like your designing rule, I'll see if I can apply it, that gives me a very good excuse to write.
