The book really doesn't explain a whole lot about the basics of perspective, so I had to check out the Norling's book on perspective.

I have troubles understanding the explanations.

For example, Loomis describes where the 'measuring points' will go on a perspective drawing: "All measuring points of perpendicular planes will fall in a perpendicular line through VP of those planes".

He doesn't explain what the hell M.Ps even are. Furthermore, I don't understand what he means by 'perpendicular planes'.

Please excuse me, but English isn't my first language and I have some troubles with comprehension... thanks...

Bad, bad advice. The human face isn't a color by numbers book. It depends on the subject, and the environment he's in.

He's in a 'cool' environment, so naturally, the shadows will be cool, and the area of the face with light will be warmer, in logic. Stop thinking in local colors, and instead think how light and color would interact in that situation. It's easier to set up a lightsource and work from there.

It seems like the lumps are all sort of arbitrary, maybe try drawing her naked to understand her body better. Both the outfits are really nice looking, though I don't really know about the trim being fluffy on both of them. I feel like the figure is entirely mid-range values right now, it might help to add some more pronounced shadows. Not really anything wrong with that as long as you don't rely on it as a crutch, I often play around with levels and colour balance when I come close to finishing something too. This one looks a lot better than your last one without a ref, keep it up. word of advice though, don't get too caught up with portraits, I wasted about 2 years doing that.

Lol you sound really jelly. I already have done nicer paintings of her and portraits and such, this was just a super quick sketch of her bum for fun, because I enjoyed the dull greyish soft light coming into my room through my blinds and I enjoy her bum. I didn't do the painting as a way of showing off, I wasn't even going to post it online, but decided to for the hell of it, and put it up here instead of on a site where my name/her name is attached to it.

I know I have been posting a lot without posting work lately but that's because I've been doing a lot of disposable perspective and gesture stuff. I will post some of that if that would make you happy but anyone can find my work and I do post from time to time so it's not like I am trying to hide my skill level or anything. I have the name because I feel like in an environment like this it's good to be able to identify who you are discussing with. anonymity has no value here imo, I post anonymously everywhere else.
>>1623162
Yes, you will find that if you continue just doing portraits all the time you will get very good at painting faces of all kinds and the nuances of colour and tone in the face, but colour has a lot to do with lighting and texture and there are only so many lighting and textures that you can capture in a portrait you are limiting yourself severely.

Interesting lighting, but the cropping is a bit awkward. Everything is contained just barely within the frame--all the legs touch the border of the image, and everything is contained. I would have more elements that extend out of the frame boldly or something, or add more space in some direction, I dunno, mix it up. The pose could maybe be more interesting too, like all the spider legs are just standing there.

Never seen this posted before, wat.

Anyways practice on a different sheet cause if youre using actual copic brand paper, it wont take alot of ink before the paper is full and youll just push your colors around.

Get the right amount of each ink on paper on a scratch sheet before laying it all down on your final draft there.

The plus side, Copic brand marker paper is pretty much the best, but it is very unforgiving if you use too much.

Hope this helps!

hey guys quick question. Im watching a video on color. he takes pics related as exemple to show what all these colors have the same values in color. So he desaturates it and gets this plain grey rectangle.

However when i do the same thing and desaturate in photoshop, i see all kind of different values and still see the circle.. why ?

You need to learn a lot of basics. First off, the facial construction and anatomy are way off, I really suggest getting a reference for this one (you should paint first from imagination then get a reference if something wont work). Values and edgework need more control to them. Also with color, skin tones look very muddy and boring right now. I suggest putting her into a colder environment to push out the redness of her lips and cheeks. Use less extreme contrasts like you have done with the eyes. When painting hair, dont pick out random single strands of hair like that, they stand out way too much from the rest of the hair. Also when you use your brushes, try to keep the flow and direction of the strokes going across the form not around it. Ive added you a picture to clarify this, hope this helps and dont get put down by this.Good luck!

Bad advice. Dont use blending modes, they make the colors look flat and muddy so easily. Also once you get used to them, painting straight with color will be much more difficult. I would also make her cock her chin up slightly and make her look down her nose to further underline her superiority, or you could go for the lowered eyes predator look..

1. Make sure proportions and shapes are accurate. Use negative space, check what's aligned horizontally and vertically, compare distances and lengths, etc.

2. Make sure your values are correct. Remember that the overall value statement is much more important than the minor details. Think of the spherical/box form that is the gross simplification of the head, and push that shape with your values above everything else. You may also find it helpful (and useful) to think of which planes are facing the light source, and by how much.

3. Try squinting. You can eliminate detail that you shouldn't be worried about in the early stages of the painting. This also makes it easier to see the big shapes.

You have no true darks or true lights. Composition is weak because you have few interesting shapes, and you aren't quite telling a story.

Best advice for the future would be to do several thumbnails before committing to anything. Try out different shapes, different value placements, different poses, different vantage points, different lighting conditions, different points in time, different concepts, etc. Flesh out the one that's best, not the one that's first.

More on thumbnailing:
http://pastebin.com/fZM8NdBr

In the future, if you feel your composition isn't working, fix it immediately, start over, or scrap it altogether. Composition shouldn't be compromised just because you already invested time painting something.

Painted this for fun - hope you don't mind. I don't know if there's any useful information in there, as there are plenty of mistakes.

A few points for your drawing:
Proportions could use some work. Nose is a bit long, mouth a bit low, and the jaw isn't quite the right shape. I suspect we should see some of the other ear from this angle. Eyebrows are asymmetrical, and the eyes are poorly defined (not that mine are much better).

There are a few general pointers:
-Strong value separation and value massing
-Large brush strokes and focus on planes - work general to specific
-Paint as opaquely as possible, and refine later - try to lay down the correct color/value with one stroke instead of many
-Learn the 'rules' for edges, when they should be hard and when they should be soft (and to what degree)
-Gain some experience painting traditionally (oils and acrylics) - try to approach digital media as if it were the traditional counterpart you're emulating

There are some nice demos here:

Thank you very much! And yes it is a cellphone photo.

The material used is Super Sculpey in terracotta, and whilst the head is quite heavy, the internal part of the sculpey is mostly comprised of a chicken wire frame stuffed with a large ball of tin foil and then wrapped again in tin foil (insulating so when I go to bake the sculpture it cooks from the inside).
The neck is just some more chicken wire twisting together and embedded in the wooden plinth you can see the sculpture sitting on.

Started to doodle the proportions of an original character I have, and I wound up painting a model I might use as a basis for her appearance. I need to fix the construction of her head, that's why I cropped it out, but I'd like criticism on the face.

I don't plan on making this character look exactly like this model, but I can't decide on her appearance. I was originally going to make her Puerto Rican or Dominican, but I'm awfully inspired by this girl, who is Argentinian. Perhaps I could make her have features of both ethnicities? without trying to sound rude that's just probably becuase you have been drawing 'wrong' for a long time out of your imagination free from any objective comparison and now that you are realising how difficult you find it to imitate something using the an good technique you are finding it more difficult. Just keep practicing.

Also try not to just copy what you're looking at, analyse and understand WHY what you are looking that way and then draw that, if it doesn't look a whole lot like what you are studying it doesn't matter as long as the construction and such are correct.
