How do you get popular on: Tumblr, Twitter, Instagram?

Everyone keeps saying deviantart is dead and other sites are way better for artists. But I've tried multiple times to make a following on these sites and failed. I've been active on DA for 4 years and have 2,000 followers. I got that way mostly through submitting in their groups for all those years and one time I got a DD. I get regular commission offers through here too. It's by far the best for me atm.

Instagram is my second largest at 110 followers.. i get about 40 likes on average and rarely a comment. I don't know how to get popular here apart from using a million stupid tags, which I do, but they at best get me 1-2 followers (most of the time none though). Tumblr is ironically the most dead and frustrating site to me. I have about 100 followers, but for nothing because my posts usually get zero notes. I have no idea at all how to get noticed on this site, I've tried using the tags but again: very very little effect, if any. It's ironic, because I see everywhere people saying tumblr is one of the best for artists. Twitter is the same story, all I know how to do is use tags and it doesn't get me anywhere.

Please. People who have 5k+ followers on these sites, WHAT DID YOU DO. What advice would you have for a complete nobody that would start an account today? How do you stop being invisible?

pic unrelated, but I know Ilya will get your attention.

Bumping for interest. I rarely get any attention on Tumblr as well, and I would say it's because my art is not quite as good to deserve it (30 to 40 likes as much and maybe 1 or two reblogs) , but then I see somebody whose blog are 3 mins sketches which are receiving thousands of hundred of reblogs and are celebrating their new 50k followers. I'm not even mad, I just don't understand what I'm doing wrong. :-/

Do anime fanart on Twitter and use the japanese hashtags, interact with other people, have a personality and be nice, follow a bunch of artists, specially ones with less than 600 followers or something, but there are also a lot of really popular artists (say, pito_sh) that rt art from western artists and some really amateurish looking stuff

Every site has something that it would like to see.
Some are general.
The smaller the site, the more likely that it's demand will be narrow.
You will do better on pretty much any site if you narrow down what you draw to one topic, post often, and draw what the site likes.
Deviantart is pretty low in ranking.
It very much likes semirealistic women looking directly at the viewer.
If I were you, I would advertise on Reddit.
Despite its reputation here it's full of all kinds of people with the opportunity to be viewed on the front page of a particular subreddit.
If people happen to like your art there, they are more likely to follow you or find you.

What kind of art do you draw? I think it's very easy to get followers on Tumblr with these things:
>fanart of anything with at least a moderate fanbase there
>decent skill or otherwise charm to your art
>high activity
My problem is the last one - I easily get at least a few followers per most of my posts, but haven't been putting the effort into activity to really ramp that up. Your problem might be your content. From my observations of other artists, it's hard to get acknowledged for original art unless you have a very appealing style. What kind of art are you drawing? If it's fanart you probably just need to improve your skill. Fandom culture is huge on Tumblr. If it's original, you should focus on stylistic appeal but accept that you might just not be able to host a big Tumblr blog.

No idea about Twitter. I tried it and thought the way it works is horrible for artists, since people mostly just get promoted by retweets and tags don't seem like something people check. It didn't work for me. Maybe if I were more aggressive with interacting with others, but that feels manipulative if it's ultimately for my promotion.

Even more clueless about Instagram. I've never used it.

>> No.3434591

use everything, post everywhere. you can only be selective when you've build a big enough fan base. say "I'll focus on posting my art on 'insert social media site' so follow me there from now on".

Maybe something you guys should think about also uploading speedpaints on YouTube? I found a few artists I like just from finding random speedpaints on YouTube.

It's also pretty fun to watch a speedup version of your drawing process.

>>3434575
I have a Twitter but it feels like it's way harder to get attention on Twitter compared to Tumblr. I also feel it's harder to showcase your art on twitter.

At least on Tumblr you can have a link on your home page that can filter only the posts with your art. You can't really do that on twitter. And unless you're already a good artist, you will have to post random bullshit unrelated to your art sometimes to keep your followers engaged. And this random bullshit than buries your art tweets, making it harder for people to find your art.

Is it taboo to follow a lot of people with your twitter? I would easily get over thousands of artists, but most artist I follow only have in the hundreds and sometimes not even that much.

Not that poster.

Twitter lets you follow up to 5000 accounts, after which you are required to maintain a 1:1 follower/follow ratio to follow more accounts.

Following many people isn't a bad thing, but your retweets and likes will show up in your follower's timeline. Some people who like to keep their timelines clean might not like too many likes by one person.

On many third party apps, your twitter account would be ranked more highly if you have a large follower to follows ratio, but I don't pay that much mind.

As an aside, Twitter is still the most popular social media platform in Japan, so if you want Japanese followers Twitter is the place to be. I don't tag and I only doodle western stuff, and Japan is still a third of my visitors.

>> No.3434716

I'd say it's about balance.
You have to be pandering to popular things, obviously, but you should also show unique or rarer subjects to people. The key is to have just enough pandering so they keep you for what they like, but not enough to not become a boring placeholder they'll remove at the first occasion.
I'd also advise never talking about private life, but blogging about art moods and hype is OK.
Regularity is key. Don't do only one big pic a month, but rather, 1-2 small things every weeks. Have an easy name to remember. More important than you'd think with short memory normies.
Finally, showing up in stream sites like picarto or even twitch (even just as a viewer) to talk to people will work on the long run.

maybe look at what the people whose blogs you see have 50k followers did when they started off? might take a while to scroll all the way down but maybe that might help.

also idk i'd say just work to like 1k followrs and then start RTing people's work and DMing them trying to be nice. i think it would be hard to be so socially inept as so to drive those people to spread negative things about u so i think u will be good with trial and error desu

I start some months ago and I also wanna know how to boost my following.
But I realized so far is that I get the most attention when I draw popular characters.
A lot of people say that NSFW drawings alone will get you a following. Nope, not true. Not for me, not for other NSFW artists I been seeing.
You will get some people, but not nearly as many.
What you gotta do is PANDER HARD to a popular fanbase.
I draw characters from every series I like but the ones that got me the most feedback are the ones from both meme and popular media.
